Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
They're mid-tier. Tier 1: Cedar Point, Kings Island Tier 2: Carowinds, Canada's Wonderland Tier 3: Kings Dominion, Knott's Berry Farm, California's Great America Tier 4: Dorney Park, Worlds of Fun, Valleyfair Tier 5: Michigan's Adventure I don't agree with this... Carowinds Tier 2? I'd say Knott's is easily in Tier 2, and probably KD is above Carowinds. At worst, they're in equal tiers. I haven't been to KD in 15 years, and I went to Carowinds a couple of years ago, and I'd STILL put KD at worst, equal to Carowinds! Oh, and Michigan's Adventure is more like Tier 6. There is no Tier 5! I'm going by investment and attendance. I guess you could put Knott's in tier 2 then but still the rankings are accurate. Are you basing this just on Fury being the new hotness? I mean, KD has a Giga already. They don't have a Hyper, but they do have a sweet Floorless, and one of the only launched Inverts in the world. Next year, they'll have an RMC. I just wasn't that impressed by Carowinds when I went there. Underwhelmed, actually, would be an apt description. I guess it's all a matter of perspective, however... -

Are upcharge passes really worth it?
DILinator replied to WestCoasterKing's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
No no I wanna hear it. WTF? His opinion is clearly that it is not worth it. He already told you that without actually writing it. FWIW, I do think that the question is purely subjective, as whether it's worth it is going to be based on each individual's personal situation, and preference. So, I think it's kind of hard for one person to tell another person whether or not it's "worth it", across the board. My unpopular opinion has more to do with the concept in general, and that's what I'm just keeping to myself! -
Wow! I didn't realize you hadn't gotten on one before! Awesome that you've now been born again in the waters of the RMC magic! Maybe you can start a new sister-cult now! Enjoy the rest of your day there! Believe it or not, SFNE is still one of my top 3 "Bucket List" parks to get to! Hopefully someday!

I've made my (unpopular) opinion on these things well known in the past, so I think I'll just keep my 2 cents to myself this time around! -

Even though I love Sea World, and count Kraken and Manta among my favorite coasters (haven't ridden Mako yet), this doesn't surprise me in the least! Mine Blower looks SO freaking legit! -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
When I was at KI a few weeks ago, Banshee was practically a walk-on during the lunch-rush times, as everybody and their brother was in hour-plus lines for Chicken Shack, and Panda Express! So if you time it to hit Banshee around lunch time, that might be your best bet! (You just might want to skip eating at the park that day - fair warning! ) -
Three closest parks near you
DILinator replied to mike541x's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah, that IS a great collection of parks to all have within 3 and a half hours of you! I think it's funny that even though you live in the same state as CP, you are a half-hour farther away from it than I am in Michigan! Ohio is a BIG state! Not sure about your drive, but beside Ohio being a long drive, it is also an extremely boring drive. Flat, cornfield's and tree's. There isn't much to see. Makes for an even longer drive. I hear you regarding the drive! As much as I love Kings Island, I HATE making that long drive down there, because not only is it 4 and a half hours, you're right... it's SO boring!!! It does make it feel even longer than it would otherwise. As for going to CP, it's not quite as bad... The stretch in Ohio on the Turnpike is pretty boring, and always filled with construction, but all in all, it's not a terrible drive to make. -
^Cedar Point would often do that with Disaster Transport. I asked about that once, and was told that there were holes in the roof, and water getting into the troughs (it was a Bobsled coaster, in case anybody is not aware) could disrupt proper ride function. Still, it was really annoying to not be able to ride an indoor coaster when the rain blew in and closed everything else at CP!

There aren't many coasters that I think truthfully deserve the label of "forceless" and "boring" (certainly not many of the B&M's that get falsely labeled as such), but Goliath is a truly boring, and underwhelming coaster! I wouldn't say it's entirely devoid of forces, but they definitely seem muted, vs. what they should be for a coaster of its size...

I agree with you on the HuffPo connection, and admit that on one hand, it's fairly shocking to me. However, on the other hand, I feel like HuffPo is only a few notches above The Onion when it comes to actual, factual news reporting, so... -

I hate to sound like a dismissive jerk towards the guy, and I also have to admit, regrettably, that my oldest son spends way too much time watching Coaster Studios' videos, but who the @#%$ really cares about what some kid on the internet says!?!?!? I mean, from the park's perspective... Outside of the very small group of people known as coaster enthusiasts, nobody is really even aware of CS' existence, and I doubt the parks can hardly be bothered by what he's saying. There's so much opinionated dreck on Youtube, that if reputable companies bothered themselves worrying about what every hack on there said, they'd go crazy! So yeah, while I see what you're saying, I guess my point is that in the grand scheme of things, this whole "problem" that was manufactured about the slower launch, was only an issue among a very miniscule portion of people, and nobody here, honestly, should ever take anything CS says with more than a grain of salt. -

Man, does that ever look phenomenal! I am SO excited to take the kids on this come November! Woo hoo! -
What? Batman is probably the smoothest coaster in the entire park. Anyone who thinks Batman is rough should find a new hobby. Snappy? Hell yea. Rough? LMAO. I would agree that the coaster itself is smooth (but snappy). However, I would describe the head banging that can ensue on the Batman models (or any intense Inverts) to be a little rough at times. Rough on the ears at least... GASM was an ear-bashing POS, and GL is generally a huge improvement, but it still sucks. Well, on THIS we can completely agree! I think GASM may be the worst coaster I've ever ridden! Anything that can make Green Lantern be a "huge improvement" has got to be in contention for that title!

See, 300 pounds is reasonable! Obviously somebody of that size is going to have trouble with a capsule drop slide. But 200 pounds??? That's ridiculously low! I mean, perfectly slim people who are tall, and have muscle on them, will tip the scales over 200 pounds! Like I said, I am not very large, but I weigh more than that. I guarantee you I'm not going to get stuck in a waterslide or cause it to break though! It's just another strange policy at Volcano Bay to me, and one that also hopefully gets rectified over time...
-
Unless they have scales at the top of the slide (or at the entrance), I'm not sure how they really enforce that weight policy... I mean, if somebody's even borderline overweight, especially if they're female, I don't see the slide ops being comfortable asking them about their weight, or telling them they can't ride because they're "too fat", essentially. Regarding myself, I weigh about 15 pounds more than said limit, but I don't look that heavy at all, and I'm sure I wouldn't get a second glance from a slide op, especially since I wear swim shirts. As an aside, I really should do the Guess Your Weight/Age booths at parks, because I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to guess correctly on either one of them! At any rate, I'm really curious about the enforce-ability of this policy, given the sensitive nature of people's weight...

^Man! Is Berserker a "Bayern Kurve" type of ride? If so, it's a shame that they'd remove it! There aren't enough of those left as it is! Also, is White Water Falls rumored to be getting removed, or even closed already? Sorry if these things are well known to the regulars, but I've apparently missed some of that info, focusing mostly on the Invertigarden area for expansion. If indeed all of those things are removed, that definitely opens up a nice sized footprint for a coaster, even an Intamin Blitz type like Maverick!
