Dollywood Discussion Thread
Voyager6442 replied to crispy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm going to be at Dollywood on Friday, May 19, but I might be able to get there Thursday afternoon after 3:00. If I got there after 3:00, what kinds of lines should I expect for Thunderhead and Lightning Rod? After reading the posts in this thread, it sounds like I should get to Lightning Rod as fast as I can and ride it before it breaks down. Thanks. -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
Voyager6442 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm going to be at KI on Monday and Tuesday, May 15 and 16. I have a Cedar Fair Platinum Pass for the first time this year, and I will get Fast Lane passes as needed. Since the park closes at 8:00, I know I won't get any true night rides on the Beast. Would rides on the Beast at 7:30 be noticeably better than rides earlier in the day? I was thinking of going to the Beast about 5:00 and spending the rest of the day riding it. What do you guys think of that strategy? I am a wooden coaster guy, so my goal is to get as many rides as possible on the 4 wooden coasters. I rode Woodstock Express for the first time at KD last summer and loved it. I can't wait to try out Mystic Timbers. -
Carowinds Discussion Thread

I'm planning on taking my first trip to Carowinds on Thursday, May 18. For the first time, I have a Cedar Fair Platinum Pass. I checked Carowinds' website, but I wasn't able to find any information about (1) early entry, or (2) exclusive ride times for Platinum Passholders on that date. Would anyone be able to help me? Thanks. -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
Voyager6442 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I’m planning a trip to KI on May 15 and 16. Unfortunately, my body started telling me last year that it doesn’t like as big a dose of coasters as it used to. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s the G forces or the intensity that is causing the problem. Here was my reaction to some rides last year: Anaconda (KD): No problem Avalanche (KD): Last part way too intense Back Lot Stunt Coaster: A couple of parts were bordering on too intense. Batman: Way too intense Dominator (KD): Way too intense at the end of the day Fahrenheit: No problem early in the morning Great Bear: Way too intense at the end of the day Mr. Freeze: Way too intense early in the morning. Riddler's Revenge (SFOT): Early in the morning: 1st ride OK, 2nd ride was not fun Storm Runner: 2 rides late in the day were OK. Thunderbird (Holiday World): No problem Wooden coasters: No problem Would anyone venture an opinion whether intensity or G forces are causing me a problem? Once I know, I’m trying to evaluate whether Diamondback and Banshee at KI will work for me. Thanks. -

I have a Cedar Fair Platinum Pass for the first time, and Kings Island is the first CF park I'm going to. Should I expect to use part of the half-hour of early ride time to get my pass processed instead of getting to ride the whole time? Thanks. -

I'm looking forward to Mystic Timbers along with a lot of you. How wild do you think it will be compared to GCI's other coasters? -

The night rides I had on the Beast in 2014 were never-to-be forgotten. I can't wait to get more of them. -

I'm a huge fan of wooden coasters, and I have really enjoyed all the GCIs I've ridden. I want to love Mystic Timbers, but I don't see any big hills after the lift hill, or any twisted turns that would get me all excited. In the recent interview with Adam House, he said this will be a crazy coaster, like Ghostrider and Gold Striker. Is there something I'm missing? I sure hope so. Thanks. -
I'm interested in learning more about how roller coasters and other rides work. Would anyone be able to recommend any books about: 1. Physics; 2. Mechanical engineering, or 3. Structural engineering? Thanks.

This is the best worst idea I've seen. Numbers always make a post better!

A theme park that is open to the public fewer than 7 days a year.

Cedar Fair. For sure. Holiday World or Knoebels wooden coasters?

I didn't see any recent threads about books, so I thought I'd revive this one. I had been looking for a good book about the technical aspects of coasters, and I found a great one: Roller Coasters, by Scott Rutherford. Chapter 3 is called Nuts and Bolts and has a wealth of technical information that brought joy to my coaster-loving heart. Has anyone read Roller Coasters, by Jenny Mackay? It sounds good from the writeup on Amazon.com, but it is a little pricey. Which books or magazines have you enjoyed?

Lake Compounce Discussion Thread
Voyager6442 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm thinking about a May, 2017, road trip to Dollywood, Kings Island, Cedar Point, and Knoebels. I'd like to add Lake Compounce to the list for Boulder Dash. Would anyone be able to tell me on what date in 2016 Lake Compounce opened for daily operation? Thanks. -
My situation was a little unique but I had a SFStl membership for 2016 (12 month commitment was up September 5th), and I wanted to switch my membership over to SFGam for 2017 as it was actually cheaper by about $0.50/month + the dining pass was $10 cheaper and I wanted to eventually add a season flash pass.....Why don't they make this good at all parks Basically my SFStl membership was canceled after I emailed them seeing what I needed to do, and my 2017 membership is being treated as new. When I got to the park yesterday, they attempted to issue the new card at the gate, but were having issues so I just went to pass processing to have the card they gave me activated and picked up my sport bottle for next year. Word of advise, get your pass taken care of as early as you can because the pass processing lines at the beginning of the year can be up to an hour and a half long. Yesterday I waited about 30 minutes and the line was moving quickly and half as long as I saw it early this season. Thanks for the information. Did you have to have your membership processed, or is that required only for season passes?

I'd like to take a road trip to visit the northern and southern California parks. Ideally, there would be enthusiast events at some of the parks. I thought about West Coast Bash, but the northern California parks aren't open on weekdays at that time of the year. The trip would be too long if I used one weekend for the northern California parks and another weekend for the southern California parks. Would anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Dollywood. I'm hoping to make a Dollywood-Kings Island-Cedar Point-Knobels trip in May, 2017. -

I watched In the Loop's interview with Adam House of GCI, and he said that some of GCI's coasters are family rides, while others, like Ghostrider and Gold Striker, were wild and crazy. He said that Mystic Timbers will also be wild and crazy, but in the video I've seen, it doesn't look that way to me. I'm hoping that there's more to it than what we know about it so far. Thoughts? -

Best Wooden Coaster Collection
Voyager6442 replied to Password121's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
#1 is Holiday World. For me, the Voyage is perfection itself. I thought the recent work GCI did on the Legend improved the ride a lot. The Raven is great too -- I just wish it was longer. #2 is Knoebels. I found a new top 5 wooden coaster in Twister when I rode it this summer. Phoenix and Flying Turns were great fun too. #3 is Six Flags St. Louis. Screamin' Eagle and American Thunder are top notch, and I had a couple of pretty good rides on the Boss this summer.
