  1. Deno's Wonder Wheel Park appears to have purchased the land where some independent rides such as Saturn 6, Polar Express, Ghost Hole and Bumper Cars ran. View of old rides https://www.brooklynpaper.com/denos-wonder-wheel-owners-expanding-into-dilapidated-amusement-park/ Deno’s Wonder Wheel owners expanding into dilapidated amusement park Posted on January 6, 2020 Jessica Parks The owners of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park have purchased a run-down corner of Coney Island’s amusement district, and the thrill purveyors are currently planning on how to reinvigorate the area with new attractions — without stepping on any toes. “We are seeing what will be the best fit,” said Deno “DJ” Vourderis. “Something that will complement our neighbors and not compete with them.” The lot along W. 12th Street between Bowery Street and the Wonder Wheel will roughly double the size of Vourderis’s adult section of the amusement park and is slated to open during the 2021 season. The parcel was formerly operated by the aptly named 12th Street Amusement, which shuttered roughly two years ago, leaving the rides there to rot, according to Vourderis, who said that, while many of the attraction have been destroyed, he’ll try to salvage what he can. “We will save whatever we can to repurpose into our existing park,” Vourderis said. “But a lot of it has to go after we inspected them we saw a lot was far too gone.” The Wonder Wheel premiered as Coney Island’s then tallest attraction in 1920, and was renamed “Deno’s” after Deno Vourderis’s grandfather, also Deno Vourderis, purchased the Wonder Wheel, along with the Spook-a-Rama ride in 1983. The acquisition comes amid the Wonder Wheel’s 100th anniversary, which Vourderis will celebrate with special events all year long, including a big bash on Memorial Day Weekend — the planning of which supersedes laying out their expanded amusement park, according to the new owner. “We have some ideas, but we are still working on it,” said DJ Vourderis. ”Right now we are focusing on the 100th anniversary of the Wonder Wheel and then we will see what bites.” The area labeled "Indy rides" on this map.
  2. Thanks for the update on Seoul Land. E-World is news to me, I'll repull all the pictures from TPRs 2007 trip
  3. Rookburgh is the steam punk themed area that will include the new F.L.Y. coaster from Vekoma. A new hotel, the Charles Lindbergh hotel, is being built alongside Rookburgh.
  4. I'm not proposing a rent freeze, but if NYC is not charging Zamperla a 400% rent increase it seems out of line that Zamperla would charge that much. Then again, we have no idea what went on in the original negotiations between Zamperla and the vendors. It may have been made clear to vendors years ago that this would happen with the next lease.
  5. The Rides I had a little bit of time to talk with Jeremy last week also. He owns all the current rides and is always on the lookout for used rides that can be picked up at steep discounts. Going into 2010 the park will have one of its legacy kiddie rides return. Their 1940s Mangels dry boat ride has been refurbed and the cars look sweet. The park also bought a second train ride, a high revenue ride since families can ride it together. The next two rides will probably be the The Whip and the Scooters. All the parts are in place to start working on the Whip, after Hilarity Hall is finished. A little history, Whips were only sold in 8 and 12 car models. However, Bushkill Park always operated a 10 car Whip. It turns out that the park could never get the ride to function properly with all 12 cars so they just removed two cars. Jeremy is confident that after some research (and new parts) they now have the knowledge to run all 12 cars. I only ask that they get their Whip to run properly and Whip into and out of the turns like Rye Playland and Camden Park. Scooters - I'm not sure how many of their old Lusse Cars or parts are left. I know spare cars and parts are expensive and probably out the park's budget. I'll follow up with Jeremy on that in the future. Next up, I'm going to talk about a clandestine group of dark ride afficionados living in Eastern Pennsylvania
  6. The Pretzel Even though the fun house is a tangible building at this point and has a long history. The park is questioned quite frequently about the Pretzel dark ride opening date. Right now there is a 2021 target date. There are multiple moving pieces in this project and I'll try to give an update regarding the different aspects. It will be a Circus themed dark ride, and Chuck continues to revive old props and think up new ideas. This will not be a copy of the old Bushkill Pretzel as Chuck is incorporating bits of pieces from multiple dark rides into his Circus theme. These pieces come from multiple sources, one is a paper-maiche mask created by Howard Hewlett came from Lakemont Park. Presiding over the Pretzel entrance will be a oversized facsimile of Elwood, the longtime ride operator. Chuck's had to go off-site to have his certified welder Sean McGill create the skeleton/spine of Elwood. Sean was also the main force behind the welding of the Pretzel cars. The ride will not be in a typical building but built as a ground mount. This basically means no foundation will be poured and the ride will sit about 3 feet above ground on girders. Walls will be constructed but the physical roof will be a canvas circus tent like material. While this may create other issues, it saves on building costs and will allow water overflow from future floods to run under the structure. The 484 feet of track will feature traditional slam doors and multiple vortex tunnels, including one shaped as funnel (one end will be 8ft wide while the other will be 14 ft wide). The Pretzel vehicles have been sanded and re-welded. Upholstery and painting still needs to occur.
  7. In my opinion, Zamperla did a great job getting rid of the tacky places on the boardwalk, but it is going to be a real loss for the boardwalk and community if Zamperla continues to play hard ball on rent with these reputable and established business. https://www.brooklynpaper.com/coney-island-boutique-to-close-following-massive-rent-hike/ Coney Island boutique likely to close following massive rent hike Posted on January 2, 2020 By Rose Adams A Coney Island business owner may shutter her boutique in response to a dramatic rent hike at the hands of amusement park’s international landlord, the store owner announced on Wednesday. “New Year’s Day is my favorite day in Coney Island. But today I didn’t go. My heart is too broken,” wrote Dianna Carlin, the owner of Lola Star Souvenir Boutique, in a Jan. 1 Facebook post. “It might also be the final day of the shop I’ve owned for the past 19 years. I am supposed to be moved out of the store in less than 15 days.” Carlin went on to add that she has until Jan. 15 to reach a deal with Zamperla — although she claims that a deal is unlikely. “I proposed a 50-percent rent increase . . . and they’re still wanting 400-percent,” she said on Thursday. ” It’s getting close… but not definite.” Six Riegelmann Boardwalk businesses — including 85-year-old Ruby’s Bar and Grill and 57-year-old Paul’s Daughter — had from early Nov. to Dec. 31 to negotiate the proposed rent hikes. Carlin, who goes by Lola Star, said she initially faced a nearly 500-percent rent increase when the amusement park’s operator announced the hikes in November, two months before the tenants’ eight-year leases were set to expire. On Dec. 5, Carlin claimed that the rent increase had been knocked down to nearly 400-percent — still above her ability to pay. “I would have to close,” she said at a Dec. 5 rally protesting the proposed increases. “I have no choice. I don’t know any business that could pay that much.” Carlin did not answer how much she paid in rent. All the other tenants are in the process of finalizing their eight-year leases, sources said. One affected business owner, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said his rent increase was reasonable. “I believe the deal was fair,” said the owner, who previously claimed he was facing a 25 to 75-percent rent hike, not the five-fold increase Carlin reported. “I would’ve liked to pay less, but I believe it was a fair deal.” Lola Star’s impending closure isn’t the first time the amusement district’s operator forced out local businesses. In 2010, Zamperla, the Italian corporation that operates six acres of the People’s Playground on behalf of the city, tried to kick out all eight boardwalk businesses, including Ruby’s and Paul’s, but ended up ousting only five after facing public pressure. Local advocates have blasted Zamperla, which has operated Coney Island amusement district since 2010, for its allegedly unethical business practices, claiming that the corporation asks tenants to sign non-disclosure agreements and fork over 10-percent of their profits every month. “It’s one thing for private landlords to have non-disclosure agreements, but it’s another thing when the city and the City Council issues non-disclosure agreements,” said civil rights lawyer. Norman Siegal at the Dec. 5 rally. “What do you have to hide?” However, an anonymous business owner claimed on Jan. 2 that he never signed a non-disclosure agreement, after he declined to comment on the matter in November. “There was never any non-disclosure agreement with anybody,” he said. Representatives from Zamperla, the Mayor’s Office, and the Economic Development Corporation — a quasi-government agency that helped negotiate the lease renewals — did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
  8. Thank you for the Nick Universe photos. I'm finally close to caught up after recent hacks to the database: 1) I've updated all submitted ride photos 2) Added many 2019 trip reports 3) Updated information for many parks I still need to fix Kings Island and Lagoon pages
  9. I stopped by Bushkill Park to catch up with Chuck. He had plenty of information to share so I'm going to break it into 5 posts spread out over a couple of days. Today's post is update the fun house, Hilarity Hall. Chuck fully expects Hilarity Hall to be open when Bushkill Park opens for the 2020 season in late May. John Cory continues to practically live under Hilarity Hall to perfectly level the structure. They are almost ready to re-install the floor. John has also treated the inside wood walls near the base of the fun house to best preserve it. Also a few months ago when cleaning second floor storage room above the old snack building, Chuck found a 4ft by 5ft painted clown stashed in a corner. It once hung near the exit to the barrel in the 1950s. It will be moved to its old location. Chuck continues to touch up the facade, which currently only has a base coat. As I was up close to the facade I could see some pencil drawn designs and nuances which may or may not be added with the top coat of paint. Chuck told me about a trick of the trade called "Line of Action". The premise is that the 10 feet of the facade closest to the ground is used to attract children, while anything drawn more ten feet from the ground of the facade serves as an attention grabber for those across the midway. Chuck's girlfriend Colleen will continue to put in dozens more hours painting and sanding Hilarity Hall. The words Hilarity Hall will be illuminated with 100 lights bulbs, additional light bulbs and backlights will shine on the facade. Flower boxes will underline the second floor open window across the facade. Chuck is also spending time at his off-site workshop, as has created the entry and exit doors for Hilarity Hall. Final blueprints and floor plans are being submitted in order to enable placement for appropriate electrical boxes and safety features. Chuck reminded me of the abundance of issues encountered with safety restrictions.insurance in his former State of Connecticut (home of the Insurance Industry) and said it is just so much easier to do this in Pennsylvania. In future updates I will discuss: - Pretzel Dark Ride - Other happenings around the park - A clandestine group of dark ride devotees in Eastern Pennsylvania - A book in the works “Reflections of the Bushkill Park Dark Ride”. Past, present and future”... On behalf of Bushkill Park, Chuck also wanted to recognize the donated materials, time, work and effort put in by two local companies: Go Green Get Clean for power washing buildings and sidewalks inside the park Ted's Roofing (Bath, Pa) for its pledge to re-roof the Park Office and a Power Building Hilarity Hall from a side angle The clown painting, that no employees at the park were aware of, found in the corner of a storage area. The Park Office, the green mossy roof might look appealing, but it is not good for the roof. Thanks again to Ted's Roofing This power building will also be getting a new roof courtesy of Ted's Roofing

  13. My apologies, I did not realize this thread had not been released yet. Just like we did for 2011 - 2019 this thread will serve as a place to house a list of "what's new" for 2020 at major parks and links to the announcements. We encourage you to notify us of any new rides/coasters by posting in this thread. Discussions about individual rides and parks should continue in the appropriate discussion thread through the links in this thread. If you think we missed anything let me know and I'll add all verifiable attractions. Rumors will not be included. We also don't plan to list every random out of the way upcoming attraction, so outside of major announcements this is limited to parks TPR has covered (or will likely cover in the future) in the Park Index. 15. This new park is soon to open https://www.bignewsnetwork.com/news/263403725/russian-version-of-disneyland-set-to-open-in-two-months Russian version of Disneyland set to open in two months Lola Evans 16th December 2019 MOSCOW, Russia - A new theme park, set to become the largest in Europe, will open in Moscow in the next two months. Costing $1.5 billion, Dream Island park, which commenced construction on 17 March 2016, is scheduled for commencement of operations on 29 February 2020. The park is being built with the major participation of the Turkish Ronesans Holding, Dream Island Technical Director Ivan Scholl told Anadolu Agency. "Our park is the largest theme park in Russia and the largest indoor park in Europe. There are no such parks in Scandinavia, you can find the closest similar indoor park in the United Arab Emirates. All the attractions are unique and worked out specially for Dream Island. We are proud of everything here," Scholl said Saturday. The park, being built on 100-hectares will have the world's largest indoor theme park comprising some 300,000 square metres. 'The project is designed as the first large-scale leisure destination in Russia, expected to be visited by up to 50 million people annually. In addition to the indoor amusement park, the river-fronted scheme provides a regional shopping centre, outdoor leisure facilities, a 400-key, 4-Star hotel, a concert hall, a yacht club and numerous F&B options,' according to global architects Chapman Taylor who designed the masterplan of the Russian version of 'Disneyland.' 'With a concept design based upon historic Kremlin architecture as well as Western European Gothic architecture, Dream Island theme park has a 'wonderland'-style design theme.' "In general it is a real town only covered everywhere by a glass roof, as we wanted our guests to feel comfortable in all weathers and seasons. The square of glassing is the largest in Europe, 8,600 square meters (28,200 feet). We spent a great deal of money on it," Scholl said. Dream Island has 8 zones representing different worlds and features globally famous heroes: smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hello Kitty, Hotel Transylvania, Mowgli in the Land of Dinosaurs, Dream race, Snow Queen Castle and the Magic Village with a puppet theater and horror house. "We had been choosing the heroes for a very long time, looked for, so to speak, timeless characters that will not be forgotten in five years. We use expensive durable building materials, because we do not have the opportunity to rebuild the park. Thus, we selected the heroes who are known in Russia, inhabit a recognizable, bright and beautiful world, and from brands, which continue their cartoon series," Scholl said. According to the Dream Island website, the entrance fee amounts to 2,900 rubles ($50) for adults and 2,600 rubles ($45) for children. There is also a FastPass ticket for quicker entrance to the attractions. Its price is almost two times higher, 5,400 rubles ($90) and 5,100 rubles ($85). The tickets will be available for purchase online on the park's official website and at its booking offices. 'The park is divided into themed zones, including 'Hotel Transylvania' (populated by characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and the Invisible Man) and a 'Temple of Fire' inspired by the ruined cities of the Incas. Other elements include a Virtual Reality zone with a mobile platform which gives the sensation of flying through a lost world of dinosaurs, and areas inspired by fairytales from around the world,' Says Chapman Taylor. "Each zone has attractions, designed for different age categories, but in general Dream Island is a family park, there is no super-extreme attraction, all attractions are convenient for people 120 centimeters (4 feet) high. We expect that the majority of our guests will be from Russia, but for the foreign tourists it can be interesting too," Scholl said.
  16. I'll let coasterbill make the jokes about the construction and opening dates. https://www.tampabay.com/news/business/2019/12/17/the-countrys-largest-shopping-center-is-coming-to-florida-finally-we-know-when/ The country’s largest shopping center is coming to Florida. Finally, we know when. The company manages several malls in North America, including Minnesota’s Mall of America. By Rebecca San Juan, Miami Herald After years of delays, the country’s largest shopping center finally has a birth date. The Canadian development firm Triple Five Worldwide plans to start construction of American Dream Miami in late 2021, according to Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, who is an attorney at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr and represents Triple Five Worldwide. He said Triple Five Worldwide expects to spend between $4.5 billion to $5 billion to build five million square feet in unincorporated northwest Miami-Dade County by Florida’s Turnpike, Interstate 75, and Miami Gardens Drive. The mall is expected to open by 2025. The opening date has been pushed back several times and most recently was projected for 2023. Though the Miami-Dade County Commission approved a zoning change required for the project in May 2018, plans for the retail theme park have not been submitted. That is expected to change in the coming year. “Before the end of 2020, we will be submitting a final design and go through an administrative site plan approval,” said Diaz de la Portilla. The focus in the months to come will be the interchanges needed on the Turnpike and Northwest 170th St. Also needed is an interchange — or interchanges — on Interstate 75, said Diaz de la Portilla. The roadway access must be completed before the mall can open. The developer expects to finalize an environmental study and the project design in spring 2020. Triple Five Worldwide manages several malls in North America, including Minnesota’s Mall of America. It recently opened the American Dream Meadowlands in New Jersey. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez was among the first visitors to the $3 billion project. The visit by Giménez and other Miami-area leaders came as the development firm continued to meet with county officials about public assistance for the project. A $15 million sewer pipe is needed for plans that include indoor lakes and a ski slope. Amid a changing retail landscape and thriving malls in South Florida, the mall will set itself apart by filling 65% of its space with entertainment options, including an ice-skating rink, aquarium, submarine lake, and roller-skating facility.

The theme park, which is due to open in five years time, is set to rival Disney World in terms of scale, with developers revealing it will cover the size of 136 Wembley Stadiums. It will open at Swanscombe Peninsula - between Gravesend and Dartford - and is billed as one of the most ambitious park projects ever in Europe, Manchester Evening News reports. Park bosses have also announced a partnership with EDF Energy with plans to make it the most sustainable theme park in the work with a Net Zero emissions goal. And it will be the first development of its kind in Europe to be built from scratch since the opening of Disneyland Paris in 1992. Fresh images show next generation" rides and experiences - with the final product compromising of a two park resort, with the first opening in 2024 and the second expected in 2029, reports Kent Live . What to expect First look at The London Resort set to open in 2024 (Image: The London Resort) The London Resort is set to have six islands, each with their own dedicated theme - with 70% of the attractions under cover. The names of the six lands being created, as well as a High Street, are Starport, The Jungle, The Isles, The Kingdom, The Woods and The Studio. The entrance to the resort will be via a grand plaza that leads hotel guests and visitors through a High Street which will be bustling with shops, restaurants, hotels, a convention centre and a waterpark. Visitors can start their journey in The Studios, a modern-day warehouse district that will be showing big blockbusters. Head north to The Woods, an enchanted realm where springtime reigns eternal and the boundary between reality and fantasy dissolves. Here guests can step through the pages of a storybook and embark on adventures that put a spin on beloved fairy tales. The entrance to The London Resort (Image: The London Resort) From the Woods, the journey continues through the ages into The Kingdom, an enchanted realm of swords, sorcery, dragons and legend. Here is England, but not as you know it - a dark and ancient land with threatening and imposing castles and mystical Arthurian legends. The Isles will be a land of giant creatures, mythical beasts and adventures at the crossroads of imagination and reality. The Jungle island is where past blends with the future as ancient ruins of a long-lost Mesoamerican civilisation are seen pushing up through treetops. The final land, dedicated to futuristic experiences, alien encounters and big thrill rides, The Starport is a bustling 23rd century landing zone. It will launch visitors into thrilling science-fiction adventures, leaving them mesmerised at things that should be impossible. PY Gerbeau, chief executive of London Resort Company Holdings, said: “We are creating a first-class theme park. A destination that maximises all the new, immersive and interactive technologies and experiences in the world. Map showing the six areas at The London Resort (Image: The London Resort) “But we won’t just be creating a world class leisure destination, it will also be one of the most sustainable theme parks on the planet. “We have three guidelines we work to when it comes to developing attractions. Number one is innovation. We’re not here to copy what’s been done before even if it has been successful. "Number two is relevance. We need to consider that the customers of today will not be the customers of 2024. "And the third is flexibility. We need to create a park that can evolve and adapt easily." Earlier this year it was revealed that £70 million has already been spent on the park prior to any work starting. The massive project is expected to rival that of Disneyland in Paris in terms of sheer scale, but also with a number of well-known hotel brands - including Raddison Blu who signed up back in August.

  21. No one should give a rating below 11 out of 10. This rating is unacceptable (and misleadingly incorrect). This happens when one becomes a credit whore and doesn't fully appreciate the whole park experience. With age comes maturity and greater intelligence. But at least you gave it a try. Having ridden SFNE's Superman Ride of Steel multiple times in the front row during a fierce rainstorm, your acupuncture comment is quite right on. Luckily you had glasses, acupuncture on the eyeballs is not fun.
