Waldameer Discussion Thread
CoasterLine replied to Millennium ForceJZ's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^ I wouldn't say "rising gas prices"... overall the gas prices around the nation have dropped considerably. Hell, in my town we are almost back into the $2-zone. We are at $3.19 a gallon, down from $4.15 in August. Gas prices are dropping, but so is the economy. It is a horse-a-piece. -

Waldameer has released it's plans for their 2009 expansion: http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081007/NEWS02/310079945 The expansion includes a Zamperla Disk'O, which will be located near the turn around of the SkyRide. The other new ride will be a Zamperla Flying Carousel for 2010, which will be located right next to the final bunny hops of Ravine Flyer II, in the empty lot inside the turn around for the train. Other expansions will be a "further extension" of the midway more South (which will lead towards the new Disk'O), along with improvements in landscaping and also some new/revamped games, and improvements to the main food stands across from the Ali Baba and Karaoke stage. Looks like Waldameer is continuing to grow with around a 20% growth in revenue due to Ravine Flyer II alone, biggest 1-year gain in the park's history. They are keeping up with their expansion plans... really exciting news for Erie and the surrounding area. Next year should bring on more expansion if growth continues. -

Haha, yeah it was fun. Some people didn't like it. The only down side is that the crew didn't wipe off the seats of the trains so everything was soaked when we sat down, and we had to sit in it for 20 minutes. The belts were soaked also so when we got off we all looked as if we peed ourselves. Haha. It was funny, they gave us all of the "walk up the exits and get on" passes, however... we didn't end up needing them because the lines were so short. Within the first 4 hours we were there we rode everything, we were only there from 10a to 6p and we spent at least 2 hours wandering the park and enjoying the sights that normally we were too busy to see on a normal day. It felt like we never waited in a queue at all... quite the opposite compared to a normal CP day. It was an unbelievable day. -

As for the Passholder day, it was amazingly empty. Seriously walk-ons on everything, and any rides that didn't have a walk on were no more than 10 or so minutes. As for the Raptor stopping on the lift, I was on the stopped train. It was a routine ride system restart... after we got off that run, we headed back for Millennium Force. We got on the second train of the day, and it stopped at the peak of the lift for 20 minutes. It's amazing the views you can get from up there, if only I would have brought my camera that day. All and all it was a perfect day at the Point. -
Your favorite coaster tunnel
CoasterLine replied to chavslayer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
After the ERT during the Behemoth trip, I'd have to say that for me, it would be Ravine Flyer II's tunnels in the pouring rain, thunder, lightning and pure blackness. -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

Looking at the animation, it looks like the lift has a conveyor on it that moves the boat foward onto the plunge. If that conveyor malfunctions while the lift is inoperation, I wonder what safety mechanism is in place to keep the boat from getting shot off that lift. It will probably work similarly to the way S.W.A.T. did in that the platform itself has a plug (to put it simply) that connects when it is at the base to get power, and as it rises, it simply unplugs itself giving the platform itself no power (and turning the brakes into stationary closed brakes). When it gets to the top, it would plug in to the stationary plug it has on top to provide power. This way it will have power when at base, and at top, and no other time throughout operation. -

Well, the guy who owns the domain has it through 2012, so I'd advise you to choose a new URL... preferably one that isn't already taken? -
The Official TPR "East Coast/Behemoth Trip" Update

Me too, mainly because that was the only day I was actually part of the trip, haha. That was some insane riding though. Nothing beats some thunder, lightning, and blinding rain on a great coaster. -
The Official TPR "East Coast/Behemoth Trip" Update
CoasterLine replied to robbalvey's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
I couldn't make the full trip, but coincidentally I ended up being at Waldameer (home park) anyways the day that TPR was there... Thanks to Robb again for the TPR band and ERT time... it was the most unbelievable experience riding in the blinding rain, thunder, and lightning. It was so unbelievably fun and insane. It was cool to meet a lot of you, and to leave it with one thing. I'm only happy when it rains... Thanks for day Robb! -
I just noticed that the $42.95 admission price for one day is now $43.99, along with the Junior/Senior admission jumping from $15.95 to now $19.99. Total Price hikes: One day admission (Park): $43.99 (from $42.95) Junior/Senior admission (Park): $19.99 (from $15.95) One day admission (Soak City): $29.99 (from $29.00) Junior/Senior admission (Soak City): $16.99 (from $15.95) Any other Cedar Fair parks experience the hike also?

This is only after 5 attempts to get something good, because the girlfriend couldn't listen whenever I told her the photo was coming up. Haha. Me and my girl on Magnum in June.

TPR's New Front Page - BETA TESTING!
CoasterLine replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Cut off is also happening in XP SP2 Firefox 2. The problem is in your CSS: .updatepostSmall is being assigned to a "div" tag. Heights assigned to div tags, regardless of what is posted inside of it, will never change, unlike say a height assigned to a table. The table expands to fit, while div's just cut off. Smartest thing to do would be to is to either assign a "scroll" to the overflow, to put a scrollbar on it, or make a table cell there. -

Laws of physics are completely denied by that video. With the weight of humans in the cars, there is no way they would say level unless done at very low speed, or banked slowly in and out. The weight in the train would also make the cars reaction to change of direction slow, causing opposite banking in weight shift... This would be an engineering nightmare, along with a mechanical nightmare. Think of the wear and tear on this... Look at what X went through, and that was controlled with only 2 people per side. -

Real, the park stays open for rain, unless its too heavy to safety, or if there is lightning. The opening day of Ravine Flyer II it poured most of the time during the first runs, including mine! Haha. About the anti-rollbacks, they were only for precaution, but once you are in person and you see how the trains fly over the areas that used to have them, you'll realize that they really were pointless... The only time I could see them become useful is in first testing of the season situations, when train runs are extremely slow. -

A recall on rides when a cable breaks? Don't be ridiculous. The cables for the ride probably weren't even made by Intamin, along with the fact that cable breaks happen more than is thought on different rides, it is only hyped when something tragic happens (like on S:TOP at SFKK). Cable breaks have happened on Top Thrill Dragster, Kingda Ka, and Millennium Force too, and other than the cable shearing accident on TTD, it hasn't been sensationalized. Faults can happen in anything, its all under circumstance. Saying that all rides have issues by default is like saying that all cars of the same make, model, and year will have the same issues. I had a lemon of a car, while my friend had the same year, make, and model, but different color. His worked perfect, while mine sucked. You can't always generalize problems to everything. -

The whole "power going down" fright with anything that brakes with magnets is completely useless. When LIMs lose power, along with most installations of magnets on thrill rides, the magnets become exactly that, magnets. They stop anything that passes through them with the opposite charge. When they do have power going to them, the computer systems can alter the amount of charge they have, lessening and increasing the charge to stop or allow movement of the vehicle. They function almost 100% similar to brakes, as the normal brakes are closed by default, and takes electricity to open them, and when loss of power occurs, they close. -

I believe e-stops on S&S towers basically put the pistons in lockout mode, and freeze the car where it is, and then slowly releases pressure back down to loading level, as it would be entirely rare that all the cables on the tower would break causing the ride to freefall to doom. -

CoasterLine replied to Shockwave's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
No, not as much stress. The Intamin cables physically pull the cars to the top of the tower, where as the S&S cables are guides, and the air and pistons inside the towers push and pull the trains up and down. So no, they don't endure as much stress, they can hold the weight of the cars, but don't physically endure the stresses of alone hoisting the entire car to the top of the tower. Factoring in the weight might also have something to do with it, along with the fact that the cables themselves on the Intamin rides are not looping, rather one cable from end-to-end... S&S towers have the cable looped around pulleys from top to bottom. I have no clue, however it might have something to do with the actual pulley system, and the way they are lubricated (both S&S and Intamin rides) which effect cable wear. -

I believe that the cable on the S&S towers is merely a guide cable, and could possibly be used as a backup failsafe in case of a freak failure with the ride's compression and/or pistons. The cable on S&S towers are not at all similar to Intamin ones, as there is not nearly as much stress on the S&S cables, and inspected regularly for any sort of fraying.
