Carowinds Discussion Thread

Chickie and Pete's is not a seafood restaurant and crab fries don't have crab in them. They have a blend of seasoning that you would put on crab (mainly Old Bay). -
Sorry, I'm a little confused. I am only talking about revenue because they're only talking about revenue (unless I missed something). This is a direct result of the fact that they're open every day combined with inflation. This is a direct result of the fact that they're open every day combined with inflation. They never said "in the company" like they did in the other ones, this probably means that they're only talking about SFMM and that stands to reason due to inflation. How much Bugs Bunny Merchandise do those parks sell in January and February? Until this year Six Flags Magic Mountain was the only Six Flags park in the U.S. open year round. Because of this nobody should be surprised by the fact that it's their most profitable park. They have about 18-20% more operating time than Six Flags Fiesta Texas. When compared to parks like Great Adventure and Six Flags Great America where the parks are closed 5 months out of the year the difference is even more drastic. There's no financial wizardry, just more operating time which translates into more time to make a profit. One other factor which is probably much smaller is that the park is located in Southern California. Not only is it a huge market where average household income is pretty high but the weather is perfect pretty much every single day. If we have a rainy Saturday and Sunday at Great Adventure in July the park probably takes a big hit from that. Magic Mountain almost never has to worry about bad weather keeping the guests away. They said "highest total guest spending in the company" NOT "highest average guest spending". It's creative language but with the sheer numbers the park does this shouldn't be a surprise.

B&M vs Intamin
coasterbill replied to alpengeistdude321's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Great Adventure sent their lift motor to a company in Maryland (I believe) to rebuild it. There was no guarantee that it would be possible by the end of the season but they got really lucky and got it open on Labor Day weekend in plenty of time for the huge Fright Fest crowds. It sounds like it's more luck than anything how much work is actually involved when one of them goes (kind of like a timing belt in your car). By the way please read all of this with an understanding that I know nothing about lift motors and next to nothing about cars but I figured if I used a timing belt analogy I'd make myself sound smart. -

I hadn't heard of them until this year when I tried it at Dorney but trust me... it's sex in your mouth. -

Since all of their restaurants are centered around Philadelphia this is pretty strange... it's great news though, their crab fries are amazing. Hopefully we'll see it at more and more Cedar Fair parks. -

First of all, good for you. Go Yankees! Second of all you've got to explain #3 to me. The Cubs are playing the Yankees at home on the 21st... is it at all possible to leave a few days earlier and go to the Yankees and Cubs game at Wrigley on the 21st? The next day they start a 4 game set with the White Sox which seems to be the reason you're going but you're passing up a great opportunity by not being there on the 21st. No offense to any White Sox fans but Wrigley is clearly the stadium you really want to visit. Wrigley and Fenway should be on every baseball fans bucket list. The fact that it's so easy to see the Yankees play at Wrigley and US Cellular Field in back to back series makes leaving a few days earlier a no brainer if it's at all possible. -

I totally agree, they look great on the Knoebels version. -
I agree with you completely. Furthermore, let's pretend for a minute that this really happened and we had a steel side of Colossus and a wood side of Colossus. Knowing that this is Six Flags Magic Mountain, how often do you think the wood side would be operating and how well would it be maintained? There would be a garbage can in front of the queue line for the wood side directing people to the other side 10 months out of the year and then after a few years of complete neglect they would probably just leave it SBNO.

I know they're not popular on this board but plenty of people love them. They usually have long lines despite their high capacity and they're generally well liked by the general public. I know a lot of people will probably point out that those are the "GP" and not "Enthusiasts" but we have no way of knowing if that's always true. I know my girlfriend who has been on about 150 coasters now and has really taken a liking to this hobby and her #1 coaster is Gatekeeper. Her #2 coaster is Wild Eagle. She's ridden El Toro, Phoenix, I305, Skyrush, Maverick, Boulder Dash, Millennium Force and Bizarro at SFNE but those are her 2 favorite coasters. I don't understand it, but I really don't have to. Some people like Wingriders. I like them (though not as much as she does) and maybe some of that is because of her enthusiasm rubbing off on me a little bit but I think the coasters do what they're supposed to do really well. They simulate a feeling of flight, and while they're not very intense I think it's a cool concept and it makes for a fun ride. I'd love to see more Wingriders.

This won't be an issue at Knoebels. They take excellent care of their wood coasters. -

Generally when a website that has the same layout for a long time changes things up everyone hates it since it's unfamiliar. To have everyone like a new layout on the first day it's launched is a major accomplishment. Kudos to you. Personally I agree with everyone else, it looks great! -

I hate this idea. Kissing Tower is a park Icon and Hershey is much more than a thrill park. If they build a drop tower it shouldn't be at the expense of kissing tower. -

Same here... personally I'm not a fan though. I prefer to stick to the franchise restaurants at Cedar Point. They have a good selection of those. -
Southerners Going North

^^I like your thinking but I'd suggest going to Dollywood instead of Holiday World, then go 4 hours to Kings Island. Dollywood usually closes early so you can start driving after you leave the park and just drive until you get tired... then get a room somewhere. For Cedar Point I'd do 2 days if at all possible. You could also totally switch it up and do this. (You'll need a few extra days for this, but you could also shave a day by leaving one evening after work (I'm assuming that's the reason for the limited amount of time), driving part-way to Dollywood and finishing in the morning. This method has the benefits of El Toro, Phoenix, Skyrush and I305 but you'll miss Outlaw Run. Day 1: Drive to Dollywood, spend the evening in Pigeon Forge Day 2: Dollywood, Drive to Kings Island after you leave, finish in the morning if needed Day 3: Kings Island, Drive to Cedar Point, finish in the morning if needed Day 4: Cedar Point Day 5: Cedar Point. After you leave get on I-80 east and drive until you're tired. If you want you can probably leave before the park closes to have more time to spend at the parks the next day. Day 6: Take I-80 to I-476 to get to Great Adventure (this is about an 8 hour drive). On the way stop at Knoebels and Dorney if you want. I only suggest Dorney because you'll drive through Allentown and will actually be able to see it from the highway you'll be taking. You can ride everything there in 2 hours... don't buy Fastlane, you won't need it regardless of the day or time of year. If by chance you're at Knoebels and you realize it's the best place in the world and you don't care about Dorney... I can't blame you for that. Just stay at Knoebels all day. Day 7: Great Adventure (Buy a Flash Pass, scroll to El Toro, repeat...). After you leave drive 2 hours to Hershey Day 8: Hershey, drive 3 1/2 hours to Kings Dominion Day 9: Kings Dominion, drive to Busch Gardens Day 10: Busch Gardens, drive towards Carowinds until you're tired Day 11: Carowinds (you'll need to finish driving to Carowinds in the morning but it's pretty much on your way home so it makes a nice last day... if you get to this park a few hours late you'll be fine) Day 12: Drive 9 Hours home -

Monster was ugly as anything... it's going to look great with the new paint. -
I agree but that's probably because there's nothing to look at. They're reinforcing Kingda Ka's structure and they have parts being fabricated but it doesn't look like there's anything going on that's going to visually impressive (at least not yet). My biggest hope is that this new path and former Rolling Thunder area doesn't look like complete crap. I could so see the station and queue still in place with a bench and some garbage cans in front of it.

Is there ever a specific opening time with Knoebels? They usually just open rides whenever they're ready. They're cool like that.
