Who else out there is in the midst of their post-graduate job search?

It's a bit scary. I graduate in May and it's hard work finding work that is a cut above hourly at a department store. Right now I have a good career type job working for a local non-profit managing our youth programs. Its a good salaried, full time position, but because its non-profit, I need to make a jump toward something better, especially since I will have my degree in a matter of weeks.

Any one else out there a little scared by this whole "what am I gonna do after graduation" thing?

I should be graduating in May as well. I'm having more problems with deciding on what I want to do more than searching for a job. My major is accounting but I really hate financial accounting (CPA type stuff), so I am really not sure what kind of job to even be searching for at this point. I think it's also difficult at this point to search because it seems like most companies have already done their hiring for this part of the year. I might just continue to work selling stuff on EBay (which is what my job is now) and then trying to interview in the fall when companies will start interviewing Fall 2006 graduates.

I've actually found the Non-Profit world to be quite well paying with lots of room for advancement...you sure you want to leave? Is there a better position you can get once you have your degree?

Are you still in school or did you finish? If you are still there, try to meet with an advisor and see if they know of any internships or positions. A small gig like that could turn into a full time job.

I'm sort of in the process. I graduate May of 07, but I have an internship next Spring, so I have to figure that out before the end of the semester. Besides that, like Elissa said, I'm a Rec and Leisure Major and we deal with a lot of non-profit. Non-Profits usually have pretty good salaries and such.

I am not looking forward to the job search, and hopefully it won't be all that bad.

I agree. I graduate next December with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree, and I haven't a clue what to do with it. Do I want to work in the public sector? I'm a Minnesota homeboy, do I work around here or do I see what else there is to see? It's a scary process.

I'm halfway there. I went straight into grad school after I got my Bachelor's degree. I'm teaching part time and going to grad school full time, although I am looking for a full time job teaching for next fall, then i'll go to grad school part time and work full time, lol. I'll be graduating May 2007, so that's when the real search will begin! I know it will be hard, because I am so specialized, but I am willing to relocate anywhere. There is certainly nothing tying me to Buffalo once school is over!

Non-profit has had its benefits. Its provided me with great experiences, especially with travel. In fact I was just in Philadelphia Monday through Thursday and Los Angeles area Friday through Monday!

Its not that I want to leave non-profit altogether, its just that this one is small and can't offer me what I want post-graduation. I did a huge "resume blitz" back in December and heard some good things, but I couldnt commit right then, because I still had committments for this job through April. So now im following up.

I'd really like to get out of Vegas and Nevada for that matter. Its an ok place to visit, but Im so tired of living here I could scream!

^^Have you thought about teaching in Florida? There's a teacher shortage going on now. You can move to Florida and reap the benefits of:

- No snow!

- Closer to the better B&Ms in the country!

- No snow!

- Close to me!

OK, #4 might not be so great...

That can make all the difference in the world. I don't know where I'd be now without my co-op jobs. In fact my co-op job, and my current full time job were practically handed to me by co-op.

As well as a small stint with a company that made dating websites for swingers, but I don't really consider that a plus.

I think there's a teacher shortage everywhere!

In fact, I've considered becoming a Substitute teacher out here a few times! All you need is a Bachelors Degree and to pass the CBEST (kind of like a dumbed down SAT for adults) and you're in!

It pays $108/day, and you can pretty much always get work! Plus when teachers and schools start to like you, you can get a longterm deal where they then have to pay you a real teachers salary!

^ No teacher shortage for me. I'm an instrumental music teacher. What's the first thing to go when the budget fails? the music program. Now if I was a math teacher, I'd be all set!

^ I would NEVER want to be a math teacher. I like my little bubble of instrumental music. They all WANT to be there. Or at least their parents want them to be there, lol. Math teachers have to teach EVERYBODY.

^^My English teachers were pretty nutty! The math teachers were pretty normal. I did have one math teacher would was like the world's biggest slacker, but he was really smart.

I love Florida. I did the WDW college program and stayed seasonal for a while until I got this position I have now. I would so move there in a heartbeat if the money was right.

Actually, I have been applying for a few jobs with Disney as well as ABC...we'll see how that goes.

With all of this teacher talk, I figured that I would bring this up. http://www.teachforamerica.org/flash_movie.html

Teach for America is a very good program. You would have to teach for 2 years under the contract, however, your loans get deferred for that time, you receive a teacher certification before you start, and you will receive an MBA in your field of study. Not to mention, get some good pay for someone right out of college. Maybe that is something that some of you near these areas that are in need of teachers and where this program is available could look. I know that I have.

^^I'm already certified. And I will have a master's degree in one year. Thanks though

^I don't think that would be a good idea. What school district would hire me after that?? Sorry to ruin one of your fantasies
