Do you ever feel nervous, anxious, or even guilty making any kind of major purchase? (Your opinion of "major" is up to you, everyone would be different.)

Why I bring this up? Well just curious to see how others feel when they spend a lot of money. I was chatting with friends today while making a purchase as a self-birthday-gift. (picture below, i ordered a custom laptop.) I mentioned in the chat how nervous, and guilty I felt, but at the same time, felt like I deserved it for a hard year's work. (Serving lattes to gays and lesbians isn't as easy as you think!) One friend mentioned they get nervous because they're unsure of themselves not doing enough research and finding out they got ripped off in the end. Another felt that something bad would happen to them after they made a purchase, where they would need that money they just spent.

Your thoughts...

Yea I myself can say that I feel really nervous and guilty after I buy something. It seems to me that most people feel proud, but for me I just feel bad about. I don't really like it at all, but its interesting that others are doing research in this...

^Cool, I never knew the actual term for it...buyer's remorse...(sorry, it's settling).

Yeah, Dennis, it's a pretty common thing, really, even more so when you're strapped on the greens.

Not normally on small items.

But I did go through alot of stress buying a house.

Now I get to log into my web banking and see just how much money I don't have.

Isn't it amazing when you log into your on-line banking, you hear a sucking-sound coming out of your speakers...

Anyone got any prozac? I feel the need to buy something.

As a rule, I don't buy many things for myself. That's mainly because throughout my life, I've either not had the money, or just didn't really want anything.

I sorta felt bad when I got my new laptop. That lasted about an hour.

I hope this is the case for me, but unfortunately, it won't be here for 2 weeks. I guess once i post a random photo report on it, I'll feel much better.

You see..spending 2 grand or so on a laptop would not give me any amount of buyers remorse...as I know I would both get fun and productivity out of it for years. FOr me, I got buyers remorse (until I got it) when I purchased a new clarinet for 2.2 grand (yes, instruments are more expensive than your home computer). Its always the though of "could this money be spent in better ways" that gets you. You just have to know that this purchase will make some impact on your life.

I try not to make any major purchases because it makes me uncomfortable. I have a waiting approach, where if there is something I want that is expensive, I wait for a deal on it so I don't feel as bad. Like if I see a video game I want but it's $50, I don't mind waiting for a deal on it even it means waiting a few months to get it for $10 - $20.

^^How did you get 2 grand? Your 14!!

It happens to me! Around Christmas, Best Buy had a great deal on a bunch of digital cameras. Me being 15, and having no job, $150+$70(memory, case, good rechargeable batteries etc...) was a lot of money! It took me about a week to decide what camera to buy. I spent hours of researching on the internet. And as I was at the store picking it up, I definitely felt it!

I tend to only buy things when I know we have the money for them. At one point in my life I was really far in debt and once I have paid off all my debt I refuse to ever pay for something via credit card unless I know I can pay it right off.

Usually I only pay with a credit card if it's something worthy of getting the % cash back or airline miles.

Basically, my rule of thumb is "if I can't pay cash for it, I shouldn't be buying it." Same thing goes with our cars. We waited until we saved up the money for both of our cars and paid cash. What I learned is you get a MUCH better deal if you walk into a car dealer with cash and you're not paying all those horrible intrest rates.

It takes a long time to save up like that, but in the long run it's so worth it! We probably saved thousands that way!

That's how I am. With the advent of debit visa/mastercard, I have no credit cards at all. I'm in no "bank debt" whatsoever.

Unfortunately now, as I'm looking at my on-line records, it looks like the company that I ordered the laptop from CLEANED out my account. Not sure if it was a clerical error, or theft, it's being investigated as I type. (Probably clerical error, this company is reputable.)

See, I have REAL REMORSE now. LOL

Well, some of it is my parents money...but I make sure to think of it as my money, even after they have decided to let me buy an item. It keeps me from making stupid decisions with money. The only reason why I was able to purchase a desktop or a clarinet is because it was a part present/needed for school thing. I do plan to start working though...and I might pay them back. And, I also do the whole research thing. IT DRIVES MY PARENTS INSANE! They think all I like to do is "shop", but I rarely buy...most of the time I merely research for when i will buy in the future.
