coaster1 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 So ok, USRoadTripper and I have been discussing this park for both of our upcoming vists .. Mine in March and what not ... So the question is .. has anyone been to the new location yet? And if so .. what's the best thing to do? Drive, Train to border and walk or what ... wouldn't mine 3 bonus credits while I'm down in SoCal. http://www.rcdb.com/pd1388.htm
kk_slider11290 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I would reccomend public transportation to get to the border then walking across, but public transpartation is horrible in mexico. I haven;t been there but i've been to Tj quite a few times. But if you are crossing in a car make sure to cross after 9 and before like 4, if you don't you could be waiting up to two to three hours on a busy day to cross.

ParkTrips Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I highly recommend NOT driving. Take a taxi if neccessary, as the tj border can take hours to cross back into the US. You can park near the border on the US side, walk across, and then look for a taxi once in Mexico. It is, afterall, the busiest border crossing. nursemelis374 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I drove my 1 year old Explorer down to Ensenada from San Diego through Tijuana last November and had no problems. I bought special insurance from AAA and was fine. It was Thanksgiving weekend and on Sunday morning at about 10 it took us 45 minutes to cross the border. I was extremely nervous about doing this, but had absolutely no problems. I drove all over Ensenada and was fine and felt safe. I say go for it!

TJ just has the problem of being right on the border and being a run-down tourist trap/college hangout for those people just wanting to "visit Mexico" for a couple hours.

rollermonkey Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 Two things: One, the park has been moved within TJ sometime during the winter after November. There was a second sister park from further south (Ensenada, I believe) that was closed down and the parks have been combined into the new larger location. Verify your directions carefully that they are to the new location. Two, You can take a rental car into Mexico, but you must inform the rental company in advance and obtain written permission from the company. I have done this before while stationed at Naval Station 32nd Street. Not all rental companies offer the option, so ask around. It will cost you more as you will be required to purchase separate Mexican auto insurance because the US insurance will not cover the car while it is in Mexico. Good luck, and don't get arrested! (By the way the folks I know who did visit the park in January said that it was pretty ugly and the rides were pretty scary.)

Also, any dreams you have of seeing the infamous "Donkey" show should be forgotten, it doesn't live up to the hype. (Or so I've been told) If you want to visit Mexico to just see the country, then drive a few more miles south and hit Rosarito Beach. I haven't been there in years, but I have visited many times in the past, and my friends and I had many good trips there.
