crispy Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 OK, so yeah, last year someone won the x prize, well from that has spurned what may actually become a REAL space tourist industry. Companies are forming, spacecraft are being developed, and things are moving foward FAST Virgin Galatic, has ordered 5 space craft, and plans to start flying a two and a half hour spaceflight starting in 2008, YES 2008!!!!!! Here is a link to the Story on Space.com http://www.space.com/news/050815_virgingalactic_itar.html It would be pretty awesome to see all this happen in my lifetime
Hattuchili Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 Oh, space flight in 2008! Take a look at my avatar! Where can I order my ticket? --Sören "first stowaway in space" Schomburg
crispy Posted October 8, 2005 Author Posted October 8, 2005 LOL, yeah, the tickets are about $200,000, so I think I'll have to pass as well, but the thing that excites me is the PROSPECT of being able to do it in the future, when the prices fall
Space Freak Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am going to school for. It has been one of my life long goals to make spaceflight cheap, and safe enough for anyone to be able to do it... So believe me when I say that this is abolutely AWESOME... Rob "Your Neighborhood Rocket Scientist" Doughty
DragonKhan Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 Going to space is alreday possible without many problems... The only difference will be that it gets cheaper...
phazan Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 think about being in space for 2 and a half hours. its like being on an airtime hill for 2 and a half hours!
Nrthwnd Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 Hmmm - wonder how many AIR MILES that would require?
maliboomer Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Yeah, I've been following this since earlier this year, and it is looking pretty cool. Too bad I'm $199,927 dollars too short. www.virgingalactic.com (couldn't find that site anywhere in the story.)
Space Freak Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 As far as I know, the entire flight is 2.5 hours, and because its a suborbital flight, that means you will only be in space for 15 minutes or so, but still, thats a 15 minute airtime hill. The reason why the flight would be much longer is because of the nature of the way the flight will take place (dropped from a carrier plane at ~40,000 feet, rocket launch, glide to earth). Getting to 40,00 feet would take about an hour... Hmmm... Rob
BiCoastal Kid Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Hmmm - wonder how many AIR MILES that would require? Only somewhere in the 10,000-50,000 range.
