So, the other night, I got to thinking.... "Sammi", I said, "Go put your boots on let me measure you". Sure enough...48" on the nose.

Yesterday, thanks to last year's black cowgirl boots, Samantha moved up to the world of the 48" height requirement. Of course, this was at PKI, so that didn't get her a whole lot, but she did get to ride The Italian Job and the chairswings (twice each) which was a huge thrill for her. The look on her face when IJ launched out of the station was priceless.

I know she could have ridden a few of the other coasters, but, frankly, I hate to have to take my 7 year old to a chiropractor at such a young age, so I told her we'd pass on those for now.....

Shari if you ever come to Kennywood Sammi is tall enough to ride Phantom's Revenge! She however is too short still for the T-bolt. It's still a 52" height requirement.

Yesterday my friend's daughter hit the magic 1.4 metres (56 inches for you guys) - but it got me thinking, why do some coasters of teh same design have different height requirements?

I know a lot of the B&M Inverted coasters have a 54 inch minimum height in the States, but the same rides over here are 56 inches - I can't see it being anything to do with intensity, I guess it must be our H&S laws which have the final word.

^ I know, it's hard, because so many of the more exciting attractions (not to mention faster and smoother) have a 52-54" height requirement, so it's kind of a let down, really. Although, Holiday World's S&S tower and coasters are 48", so we know without question that she'll be able to ride those next season.

I would love to check out Kennywood, and it's defintely on the list!

Aww... no pictures. It would of been so cute to see Sammi on her first big coaster.

You know, the onride photo was pretty crappy, and nobody bothered to explain to me that they could "enlarge" our image. The second time they showed it to me that way, but by then it was like "Eh, that's ok". There will be better rides to come to capture her picture on.

Some of the true "coaster enthusiasts" probably know the answer better than I, but, if I had to speculate I would have to say that here in the US there are two factors. #1, would be whoever it is that inspects and approves a ride for operation. Here in the State of Ohio it's the Department of Agriculture. They have a special department that handles ride inspections. #2 would probably be the company that insures/underwrites the park, and is probably based on the manufacturing company's recommendations?

I found it really interesting that there were several rides in both Holiday World and Splashin' Safari that Samantha was allowed to ride there, but would not be allowed to ride at parks here in Cincinnati.

Whats even worse than what E said is to have the measurements inconsistant within the park. Jarett can ride the wave swinger at Magic Mountain. (42" height restriction) but can't ride the granny cars alone because he is mysteriously 2 inches too short. (also a 42" height restriction)

I don't know why either, but it's got some serious laterals. And that is a park decision. So hey it's all good.

Katie, who get's her T-Bolt fix Friday night! WooT!

Our daughter (who is 6) made the 48" mark this year also and she is loving it (and so are we). It's so nice to be able to go to a park and not have to worry about child swap on the majority of rides now. We were up at CP weekend before last and since TTD was down and we don't ride Mantis, we only had to use the parent swap 3 times (Raptor, WT and maXair).

Not only that, but to see her ride these rides for her first time and her reaction to them is priceless. She gets a little nervous on the bigger rides (maggie and MF) but once she's on them, she has a blast and wants to ride them again. She even liked Mean Streak and she now claims MF is her favorite.

We don't usually buy on-ride photos but couldn't pass up the Magnum and Millennium Force pictures. All 3 of us managed to get in the photos and our daughter had her hands up for them. Good times and a ton more to come.

The 52" requirement on Thunderbolt is because of the heavy laterals and no seat dividers. You also must have a partner to ride.
