Most overrated/underrated band.

Recommended Posts

I did a search and nothing came up.

I'm curious to know what you think are the most overrated and underrated bands.

Underrated: I gotta say Hoobastank. It maybe because I've been hearing their songs my whole life just about, but they're one of my favorite bands. A lot of people when I mention them are like "Oh, yeah. Hoobastank..." but they've got a ton of songs that I love. They're one of the bands I can listen to my whole life and not get tired of them.

Overrated: Nirvana. I hear kids in my school all the time talk about how "They're up there with The Beatles as one of the greatest bands of all time." I don't really like The Beatles, but I respect them and acknowledge that they created the genre we know today, and there's absolutely no way Nirvana is up with them. Give me Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains over Nirvana any day.

If you were to ask every band member of every rock/alt band of the last 20 years for their list of bands that influenced them, Nirvana would be mentioned hundreds of times. That is why Nirvana can not possibly be labeled overrated. Nirvana made Alternative Music mainstream. There is a difference between just not liking a band and how overrated/underrated a band is. If you know anything about music then you should be able to differentiate between the two.

I didn't say I didn't like them. I think they're decent, and I know they influenced a lot of bands. But they aren't as influential as a lot of people seem to make them out to be, and saying they're just as good as The Beatles is a ridiculous thing to say.

well said, and entirely accurate.

and what you've said also applies to: Rush and KISS -- which made it particularly galling that the Rock and Rolll Hall of Fame dragged their heels so long on Rush, and still have not inducted KISS.

those that rate these two bands as "overrated" simply do not understand the term.

but you are incorrect.

they ARE as influential as a lot of people make them out to be.

and they are just as influential as the Beatles.

So were Black Sabbath just as influential as the Beatles.

you are confusing your musical PREFERENCE with actual influence.

This is tough, as some of my favorites I tend to think of as overrated. KISS is overrated, but I love them (the old stuff!) As much as I love KISS, they are an absolute mockery of themselves - that's part of the gimmick. The funny thing is the fuss they have put up over the "Kiss meets the phantom of the park" movie. It's a low budget MESS of a movie, but it's freaking KISS. Many fans would die to get a good version of the film. They could make millions if they released it properly. It's a joke about them by them to NOT want it released. Not a cool joke; they don't get it and aren't playing along.

AC/DC got HUGE after Bon Scot died in 1980, but none of those records are anywhere near as good as the Bon Scot stuff. But they had the formula down by the time of Back in Black and it made them superstars (even with a new front man).

Missing Persons/Dale Bozzio are underrated Ramones are still underrated - but their shirts are worn by everyone (including people that have probably never heard a Ramones song).

None of this really matters... it's like discussing overrated/underrated coasters.

@Rock N Roll Hall of fame: it doesn't matter, either. Ramones got in there after Joey died and there was all of a sudden all this Ramones popularity. Yet it took a little too long for Iggy and Blondie to get in - that is strange. It's all very subjective stuff. It's kinda silly.

Screw all that and just VOTE FOR GWAR

Underrated Local H. A 2 piece band that's comparable to maybe Soundgarden.

Overrated: Kiss. To me Kiss songs just don't sound that great to me. My OPINION would say their bland. (except Detroit Rock City, that song is awesome) to me, Kiss gets too much credit

they CREATED the idea of merchandising for a band. (just for that they can never qualify as overrated, as they added something to the Rock and Roll genre that is now firmly part of it).

an idea that was criticized by many, many folks (including other bands) who then COPIED their ideas for merchandising.

and also mention not only are several of the songs considered classics (even if folks don't know they are KISS songs. . seriously, tons of people still think "Beth" is a Rod Stewart song), but Ace Frehley also influenced TONS of lead guitarists.

Underrated - New York Dolls I dunno how much Kiss got from them, but many 80s bands sure ran with their image (which is fine, but NYDolls were very special...)

KISS took from the Dolls for sure, but also from Alice Cooper and David Bowie.

Most overrated: The Grateful Dead. While I give them credit for being "grassroots" superstars, I find their music boring as hell. But a lot of people love them, and you can't please everybody (runner-up: The Eagles). If I'm in the mood for rock infused with blues and country, I'll listen to The Band.

Most underrated: The Tubes. What's great about the Tubes is that even when they went more "commercial" in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they still didn't sound like anyone else.

One band I've always thought was a bit underrated was Collective Soul. They kind of got lost in the shuffle of the 1990's rock music scene where bands like RHCP, and Green Day, and Counting Crows and Rage Against the Machine had the biggest hits of the era but Collective Soul had a ton of great songs that I still hear from time to time today.

Overrated? Phish, WIlco, maybe Guns and Roses?

^I think a lot of the Deads' popularity has to do with Grateful Dead Culture. You could probably say the same for many bands, to different extents. For example, Kiss has the Kiss Army.

Blondie has Debheads

And Jimmy Buffet has Parrotheads (although I do like quite a few of his songs).

If you were alive when Nirvana hit the airwaves, you'd think differently. Our ears were being abused with hair band garbage. Nirvana finally got rock, real rock, back into the mainstream.

Like you, I'm not a huge Nirvana fan. I bought Nevermind the week it came out, and then sold it a week later. It just wasn't for me. I won't deny their influence though.

Overrated: Bob Seger. Really? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Do you have any idea how many artists he's written for? How many played with him before they hit it big? How he brought Detroit into the rock genre? How long his career has been? He's more desreving than a lot of people in the bloated HoF.

Thank you.

Overrated: Green Day. Although this band does have some really solid releases (When I Come Around, Jesus of Suburbia, etc.), Green Day is becoming irrelevant, especially with their newer releases. Unless Billie Joe Armstrong stops having mental breakdowns on stage and decides to go back to writing modern rock ballads, this band will become more stagnant than it already is.

Underrated: Saxon. This band is one of those under-the-radar, New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands that honestly doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Saxon's "Denim and Leather" album is incredible, and is well-worth checking out.

Overrated: I totally agree about The Grateful Dead and Green Day. Sad thing is, Green Day's first 3 albums were absolutely BRILLIANT but they've gone so far off of that it's not even funny. I could go ahead and say that any number of current musical "acts" (I refuse to call them musicians) are overrated. I mean who's getting influenced by Beyonce' or Justin Beiber? As for a band that people get influenced by that is overrated I'll have to go with Dave Matthews Band. And I'm actually a fan of their music, at least prior to the last decade or so. Their albums in the 90's were brilliant but they've got the same thing going on as The Grateful Dead had. And they just have been putting out crappy music.

Underrated: I'm going to actually say Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree. In musician circles they are very much properly rated but in terms of "popularity" there are people who have never even heard of Steven and that's a sad, sad thing.

Another band I'd put in the Underrated pile is Bad Religion. So many other punk bands get so much recognition from Green Day to Blink 182 and it just seems like Bad Religion doesn't get any of the praise they so rightfully deserve.
