PhishyBrewer Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Well our group finally finished deliberations today. So now I can tell you all about it. We had a sexual battery case, and the alleged incident occurred at Six Flags Waterworld. I don’t know if I should go into great detail about the case, because it may not be appropriate for TPR. To sum it up, someone was accused of touching someone else and making a rude comment. It was such a weak case. I don’t even know why the DA even brought it to court. There was no way to prove the act even happened. The Defense Attorney and the District Attorney presented the case very poorly. And by going with what the law says, we had to give a not guilty verdict.
FlyingScooter Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Were there minors involved? Or did dude just pinch some babe on the bum and say, You look like you could @#$$%$% %$%$%# %%%^^& **&& to me, honey. Sorry, phishy, couldn't resist.
PhishyBrewer Posted September 13, 2005 Author Posted September 13, 2005 ^No minors were involved... thank God!
SharkTums Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 It's actually quite scary how many claims involve theme parks even when the parks have nothing to really do with the crime! I really think that all parks need better and more security to prevent incidents like this.

I really think that all parks need better and more security to prevent incidents like this. I agree. As with this case, if Six Flags security would have shown more presence in the park, maybe this would have never happened. But what do you expect from Six Flags? They hire 18 year old kids for a summer job, pay them about $8.50 an hour or so, and the main thing on their mind is, “When’s my break?” or “When can I go home?” And it’s not that hard to become a security guard, I know. When Karen and I first moved to California, we didn’t make that much money. So I took a job as a security guard part-time. All you have to do is take a test. And it’s not that hard… especially when the answers are given to you.
PhishyBrewer Posted September 13, 2005 Author Posted September 13, 2005 So while you’re on a case, you’re not aloud to research anything about it or the person that is being charged. So now that it’s over, I can. The defendant in the case has been to court on more than one occasion. And has also been to court for battery before. There is nothing I can do. The law is the law. I really wish the DA had a stronger case.
Louise Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 It sucks that the guy sounds like he may be a bit of a scumbag, but hey, that doesn't necessarily mean he was guilty of this particular charge, and even if he was... You have to go off the evidence presented to you. It's tough though. I'm still waiting for jury duty, used to think it'd be fun, but a friend of mine got a REALLY nasty case and I hope I don't ever do it now!
PhishyBrewer Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 ^It just makes me think, "Does the system really work?"
ebl Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Funny thing...I actually kinda like jury duty. For one, it's a day off of work. Unless, of course, you enjoy your job. But getting to serve on a jury is quite interesting. Even in a minor civil case you get to see how the system works (or doesn't, depending on your point of view). I've served on two cases (both minor) and learned a lot. Eric

It's a nice change of pace. My employer pays me for it, plus I get to keep the trivial fee, so I keep waiting expectedly for that magic little postcard from Washoe County. Haven't gotten one in a while.
PhishyBrewer Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 The time away from work was nice. And since I work midnight shift, it was nice to sleep in the same bed with my wife for once. Plus my work paid for my time off. So that's good. I don't know how they came up with $15/day though.
FlyingScooter Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 When I did duty in Cleveland, I questioned the 15 bucks. Here was the answer: It should cover your parking and buy you a coffee. that's pretty much what it covered, too.
ebl Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Three years ago, I was called to serve in the U.S. District Court. For me, that was a 50-mile trip into downtown L.A. However, unlike regular local jury duty, they pay you mileage $.37/mile both ways plus $40 a day. I took Metrolink into L.A. ($13 round trip) and actually made a bit of money---not to mention saving some wear and tear on my car and me! I didn't get onto a case, though I did get called onto one panel. Lunch was a nice two-and-a-half hours, which allowed me to have a leisurely bite to eat and do a little exploring in the Civic Center area. By 2:30, they said that there were no more panels scheduled for the day, so we were dismissed and I headed for Union Station to catch the train home. Eric
SharkTums Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Yeah I'm honestly kind of bummed that I've never been called for Jury Duty. I've been registered to vote since I turned 18, and then registered again when I moved to California. I think it would be an interesting experience once...then I'll probably change my attitude!
4718 Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Yeah I'm honestly kind of bummed that I've never been called for Jury Duty. I've been registered to vote since I turned 18, and then registered again when I moved to California. I think it would be an interesting experience once...then I'll probably change my attitude! Don't be bummed, I did it once, was an okay experience, but I would rather sit around my house for hours on end than the stuffy waiting room. It was also during the Simi Valley fires a year or so ago, so that was the only thing on the news, and it sucked. Thought I'd go to Cupid's Hot Dogs for a different kind of lunch, wound up getting corn dogs that tasted like cinnamon.....yeah, that was sure good for my already upset stomach I woke up with that day. I've managed to dodge it the last two years, and have been glad, the only way I might actually like it more is if I didn't have to go to the San Fernando courthouse, but the local Santa Clarita one instead. Still, no doubt it'd be boring.....zzzzzzzz.....
PhishyBrewer Posted October 3, 2005 Author Posted October 3, 2005 Got my check today, and all I can say is "WOW!" $51.12 for three days of jury duty. That should buy me a 1/6 keg
