ECZenith Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I haven't been to WDW in a couple years, but last time I was there, I noticed the theme parks were selling working models of the Disney attractions to go along with the monorail train sets they offer. How many different "ride playsets" did they actually make for both Disneyland and WDW? Are these still available. If anyone has them set up at home, please share some photos.
robbalvey Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I really liked the play sets a lot, but never got them because we didn't have the room for them. The one thing Disney did that I thought was GREAT was the little die cast models of all kinds of attractions vehicles. We picked up all the roller coaster ones (Primeval Whirl, Matterhorn, Gadget's Go Coaster, Space Mountain, etc) and always picked up one or two random ones on each visit (we were never fanatical Disney collectors). But on a recent visit we found them all to be on clearance and heard that they discontinued the line. Not sure if they are still doing the playsets, but it looked like that was all that was left of the 'attraction models.' --Robb
Nrthwnd Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 ^I got the Pirates/Caribbean vehicle w/Goofy and a pirate, in DLP back in '02. There was also, tho I couldn't understand why back then, the Buzz Lightyear die cast vehicles. Then last fall, I couldn't find any of them at the Village shops in DLP. Those were great little collecting toys.
Ghost Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I love the playsets.. but they're so big I wont get them. To difficult to take them all the way back to Belgium...
pianojohn Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I bought the monorail and EPCOT ball to put under my Christmas tree, but during the other 11 months they just collect dust! They are cool to have, but they do take up valuable space during the off season.
Cerberus Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Didn't they make a California Screamin' model toy thing which powered itself around the track? It looked kinda cool, but reviews on the net have said its just a stupid, plasticky baby toy. Have any of you seen the concept models that the imagineers produce? They are so awesome I would actually consider breaking into their warehouse, killing everyone there and stealing them Why don't they produce really realistic die cast display models?! Heck, there are MILLIONS of die cast diggers in the shops http://www.diecast-collectible-cars.com/lm-images/nsm55107.jpg with super detail and such. Surely there's a similar amount of demand for ride vehicles compared to silly diggers?! You don't see endless amounts of digger forums... Meh, looks like I'll have to keep building my own Cerberus
MagnumForce Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Die Cast Construction Equipment and Farm Machinery is a huge market. As a farm boy I myself collects Farm "toys." Of course most of these are anything but Toys and are highly detailed collectibles of what we or the neighbors used to farm with. It is no different then Model Railroads or cars. If someone decided to make good high quality but relatively cheap and accurate park collectibles they would see a lot of them sold. Things like the Coaster Dynamix are a bit too high in price for most peoples blood and they are still too toylike for me to want anything to do with it. Things like the Millenium Force model being done by the Danbury Mint look great and woudl be cool to have I also have a model monorail thats sits on my desk here at work that I love.
YoshiFan Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I really liked the die cast ride vehicles as well. I think I have almost all of them and they were inexpensive (for Disney souvieners) and fun to collect. I wish they hadn't discontinued them.
SFMM rocks my socks Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I have not seen any more models for years I think they stoped making them because no one would buy them.
ECZenith Posted September 14, 2005 Author Posted September 14, 2005 ATTN FL residents Do the Disney factory outlet stores in Orlando still have any of these sets available? I'm really trying to get a couple California Screamin sets so I can make one larger model. When I was at Disney Studios a couple years ago I saw some, but I heard they have since been retired, is this true?
Nrthwnd Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Well, there's always ebay for some of these things....
ECZenith Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 Looks like ebay only has one cali screamin' and it's missing the cars... I'm having a hard time finding any of the DCA rides, i know they're retired but I figured someone out there would be selling them.
