DerekRx
More from the festival: Heath thought this was the best anniversary he's had yet. Kim is too drunk not to agree Of course, the longest line of all was for the men's room! The beer fest will definitely be something we'll do again in the future No one told me Joey and Wes opened their own brewery! The Killer Penguin was actually very tasty for a barleywine, hoppy too Over at Boulder it was time for an Elissa approved beer, the Killer Penguin I enjoyed the Imperial IPA while Heath went with the Bourbon County Stout Even Goose Island came out for the event. Haha, we don't need you anymore, Matt!
mcjaco
^ Beet beer? If it's anything like the rce beer I tried at Lake Front...yuck. Well, this weekend I found myself bachelor padding it. The wife was off to Austin to try out for VH1's Pop Culture game show. It was a weekend of me pretty much being bored out of my head. So I had a few drinks! Not what I was expecting. It was very malty, not sweet as I was expecting. Next up, Sam Adams Honey Porter. That is some fine sweet stuff. Must go to WI to grab some more! Ah, my last Bells. Wheat 8 Ale. This is my favorite of theirs behind Oberon.
DerekRx
After the first session of the festival was over at 4, we had not yet begun to defile ourselves. It was off to Boston Beer Works, and then some other establishments we really wanted to get to while up in Boston. Fruits, praline, and vanilla, chocolate, and honey caramel gelati. Yum! But I went with the gelati sampler Adam and Ellen chose to split the Whole 9 Yards sampler of foo foo desserts All except me, who demands more beer. A Lindeman's Lambic Cassis will suffice It's cold out, so Hot Chocolate for all After a few hours, we were hungry again. Time for dessert! mmm, New Belgian beers. Hi Matt! Sadly, the place was packed. We didn't even get to sit. I prefer Selings Grove to this when it's full! I went with the Founder's Breakfast Stout, while Adam went with Collaboration not Litagation Ain't that the truth! a very nice selection of beers, all served properly Next stop, the Publick House, the #2 place to have a beer in America and so, with that, our 2 groups parted ways for the evening. But with my fuel cells filled with beer, I was ready for more, and so was Adam and Ellen Chowdah and beeah, what more do ya need? Poor Ellen isn't used to drinking so much, but Adam was ready for some Victory Red Heath went with Curley's Irish Stout, and Kim the Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale, complete with blueberries I chose the Back Bay IPA as my brew Looks like we beat the Beeradvocate people here, as there were still seats available Team Extreme gears up for some Boston Beer Works Luckily this city has a subway, called the T. And there were no Aqua Teen Hunger Bombs that I could see.
DerekRx
Before heading home on Sunday, Matt had talked us into going to a bar called Sunset Grill by BU. After seeing the menu at the beer festival, we were definitely interested. 112 different taps, 250 different bottles, and lots of good sounding assortments of food, that's pretty much perfect! Unfortunately, with the mixture of college kids and beer drinkers all converging on Boston this weekend, a lot of what we wanted to try was kicked. Oh well, we'll be back. and Red Rocket from Bear Republic for Adam the birthday boy The final beers of the weekend, Red Ale from Rock Art for me check out that mound of nachos! Adam went with the Gold Medal IPA from Avery, also pretty good I went with the Leather Lips IPA from The Tap since they were out of Hop Monster on cask. Very leathery More handles for when they actually have those beers on tap Look at all them taps! Get here early enough and the bar is yours. Plus they've got 3 bars! The Sunset Grill, lots of beer! Nodders
Wow, looks like somebody had a great weekend! Maybe in a couple of years we'll fly over for that one. Good report. Meanwhile, I'm making do with a bottle of Theakston's Old Peculier. At 5.6%, it's a bit tasty! A dark & mysterious brew! Full-bodied, rich, smooth & delicious. Juggler
Well as I don't have a "Recent Beer Festival" photo to post or a beer I have drunk this evening I have resorted to a pic from last years Rotherham raid. http://www.bluebuzzards.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/barstitch.jpg The drinking continued long into the night back at the Buzzards Sheffield Control Station. Rugged One
Back safe and sound from a fun filled weekend in Boston. The Extreme Beerfest was even better than I had hoped and last night we had an awesome dinner at The Publick House. Hopefully I'll get some of the pics up tomorrow. In the meantime, tonight I had another Terrapin gem that I had my buddy Greg bring up from down South for me and it's one I have really, really have been wanting to try. The Terrapin Wake-N-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Wow, it's pretty freaking good too. Especially if you like coffee, as that's pretty much what you get the whole way through. It's brewed with a special blend created by the Jittery Joes chain in Athens, GA. Of course, the beer itself is brewed in Maryland. Go figure. Definitely up there as a top coffee stout! The Terrapin Wake-N-Bake Coffee Stout. The state of GA had deemed that name unfit to be printed on the bottle but that's what everyone still calls it. Stupid GA... N'at Man
LOL, more beer shirts at the beer festival than coaster shirts at a coaster event for you guys. Meanwhile, I've tried some more Bell's beers and I've come to the conclusion that they can do no wrong.

Meanwhile, I've tried some more Bell's beers and I've come to the conclusion that they can do no wrong. Watch for them being a bit to "unfiltered." It's one thing to have sediment, it's another to have Miami beach at the bottom. I stopped drinking them for awhile because every bottle was horrendous. After their move, it seems to have stopped. DerekRx
Tonight it was back to normal in Pennsylvania. So instead of diving right into my hoardings from Massachusetts, I decided to go with some other stuff first and savor that later in the week. First up tonight, probably one of the last beers I'll have from the now deceased Heavyweight out of Jersey (shame too, there was actually a really great brewery in that mess of a state!) Luckily it IS fresh and this year's batch. How I got the old label I have no idea! Next up, I opened the case of Nugget Nectar to find...last year's logo?!? Really malty with a nice fruity finish. Low on carbonation, but that's probably from being at least 8 months old Heavyweight's Stickenjab, an Alt beer
Nodders
You know, next time I get over there, you'll need to let me know where to buy these interesting looking ales! Meanwhile, I'll console myself with a large bottle of Wychwood Breweries Goliath. CHEERS! It certainly is mighty ale! That's over a pint in there (660ml) or 2 thirds of a litre! Rugged One
Since we are currently having some craptastic winter weather right now, I thought that a nice Imperial Stout would be in order to help warm me up tonight. I've heard good things about the beers from Two Brothers Brewing in Warrenville, Illinios. They brew an Imperial Stout. Sounds like a logical good choice, right? Wrong! Blech! I've got almost nothing nice to say about this one. Thin, watery body. Overly sweet. Bland finish. For the style, I just didn't dig this at all. The Two Brothers Northwind Imperial Stout. Much like Old Man Winter on the label and the current weather outside, IT BLOWS!
DerekRx
^^If you head to our area of the world, we'll definitely hook you up with some of our better brews! ^Ew, not only did you choose a beer with a horrible name, you also hoped to make it better by placing it in Naked Fish worthy glassware. I hope you learned your lesson! As Heath said, the weather here is sucktacular. But unlike him embracing the dreadful snow and ice, I choose to dream of my retirement in San Diego, sipping down on Pizza Port for the remaining days of my life. Yeah, I really couldn't wait any longer to tap into my stash from Mass. Oh yeah! Not quite Blushing Monk (told ya, Ellen!) but it's still fantastic. Hurry up, Michigan's Adventure, Derek needs another reason to go up near Grand Rapids! But forget tomorrow, tonight ends with Founders Rubaeus, a raspberry beer Yup, still sleeting. Tomorrow will be a fun drive to work Hunger strikes, waffle ice cream sandwich fulfills Nugget is definitely good and holds its own, but it's no Wipeout (not that it's brewed to be) Instead of breaking opened another bottle of Wipeout, I decided to compare it with my new favorite winter brew, the Nugget Nectar Yup, still doing stuff, only now it's sleet Who really cares what's going on outside when this great beer is indoors? Not me! Good thing this bomber of Wipeout has no one to be shared with today! An hour later, still coming down Oh yeah, now THAT is the West Coast IPA standard So bring on San Diego via Massachusetts. Just a few more weeks baby! Not something I like driving in, shoveling, snow blowing, etc When I got home, this was the situation outside

mcjaco
Heath, I'm shocked at the yuckiness factor of the Two Brothers stout. I've found most of their stuff really good. Their Dog Days (seasonal), Prairie Path and Bitter End (my favorite) are quite good. Guess I'll stay away from the stout!

Rugged One
^ ^Yeah, their Imperial Stout was a complete disappointment. Looking at other people's online reviews of it, it's looking like I'm not the only one who didn't like it. The good news is that Derek and I have some other Two Brothers stuff coming up for tastings, so hopefully we'll have better luck with them. Time for some pics from this past weekend in Boston. The trip originally started with just Kim and I going up to visit with our friends Jay & Marsha and taking it the Extreme Beer Fest. Soon, we got Adam and Ellen on board and then finally talked Derek into going and next thing we knew, it was a full on BACT ATTACK! Adam and I end the session showing just what we thought of the fest. An all around great time with a load of fantastic beers. The American Beer Fest is going to be happening here in June. Hmmmm.... Derek's not rubbing it in or anything as he trys a sample of something from Goose Island that Matt probably hasn't even had. Special thanks to Jay and Marsha for putting Kim and I up for the weekend and showing us around Boston. Here Jay has The Wind Cried Mari from Cambridge Brewing while I try The Imperial Death March Stout from Milly's Tavern. The event itself was pretty crowded but luckily we only had to put up with a few drunk a$$holes here and there. Of course they encourage everyone to have plenty of water and food to counteract all the high ABV stuff. Adam and Ellen obviously know how to take good advice! One of many pics I have of Derek and I that I have no idea what we're drinking. He probably had an IPA and me a Stout.;P Of course you have to start out your day with a hearty breakfast. In this case, The Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout. Just as good as advertised and one of the few samples that I took my good old sweet time with. The group ready to rock the hell out of the fest! Trust me, there was too much beer at this thing for even all of us to try! Waiting in line to enter the Cyclorama and this year's Extreme Beer Fest. I'm glad we all got there somewhat early as the line eventually became 1,500 people strong.
Rugged One
On Sunday evening we headed over to Brookline and one of the top rated beer bars around, The Publick House. Allthough our anniversary was the day before, we treated this as our romantic anniversary dinner. Ahhhh, isn't that special? The Publick House most definitely lived up to expectations. A great atmosphere, excellent bottle selection, and a nice (and reasonable) draft selection made for a great time. We'll definitely be back! All in all, it was a fantastic anniversary dinner. Cheers! For dessert, I went with a Belgian sampler. The Gouden Carolus Noel, Houblon Choufee, Chimay Tripel, and Afflagem Blonde. Kim enjoys the heck out of her baked macaroni and cheese. They like to cook alot of their meals with beer at the Publick House. Here's my meatloaf with Arrogant Bastard gravy. Mmmmmm. Jay was so impressed by my Breakfast Stout, that he had to get one too. Next, I continue my education of Founder's brews with a Black Rye. Needless to say, they were fantastic! For an appetizer we started out with the moules frites, mussels steamed with La Rulles Triple, tomato, spinach, asiago and garlic bread crumbs. Jay goes for the Cisco Brewing Whales Tale Pale Ale. Once again, you have to start out with breakfast first. With some Founder's Breakfast Stout. Perhaps the finest coffee stout I've had yet! Luckily we got there early enough and got a table without waiting. I love the feel to this place. Lots of wood and dim lights. It just makes you want to sit around and sip a fine Belgian. Here we are at the #2 best place to have a beer in America accordign to BeerAdvocate.com. They may be a little Boston biased but it's still a pretty darn good beer bar. Juggler
Just making sure I keep in training ready for the weekends festivities by tucking into a few beers. Well we may have lost the Ashes but when it comes to proper Beer we've got the Aussies well and truly SPANKED!! First up Badger Brewery's "Tanglefoot," well it IS Valentines day and Niicolaaah is much better looking than Derek!!!!!
niiicolaaah
Woohoo! No beer or wine for me tonight... sorry guys.
Nodders
HA! Valentine's Day? I LOVE BEER!! So tonight I'm having another from the Wychwood stable. I've also just finished a half pint from my latest batch of homebrew. Last one before bed ... I have a long drive north tomorrow! I'm certainly not afraid of the dark! Old Conkerwood Black Ale. As brewed by me!
DerekRx
I couldn't spend Valentine's Day with my woman, so I guess I'll have to spend it with my beer this year. This really is my beer love of the winter! Now if only winter would end (but the beer can stick around) Sticking with the Troeg's theme, more Nugget Nectar tonight I never actually had this before. Actually pretty good, not watery But it's not just Valentine's Day, it's also Dave's birthday. So here's some Troeg's Oatmeal Stout in his honor After leaving work early, getting stuck in the snow thanks to UPS, and shoveling a path for my car, I was ready to drink Yup, still snowy/icy with really crappy plowing jobs
Juggler
Just finished off the last of the Pendle Witches Brew and it's time to head for bed. Next post will hopefully include some pictures from Sheffield control as the Buzzards start demolishing the two barrels of Home Brewed Ale (Produced by my good self.) Nodders and Mr Pete (aka Muttley) will also be helping with the drinking of "Smoke On, GO!" and "S.O.S. (Six One Seven)" ales. If you want to see what we got up to last year then follow this link. Rugged One
Well today I stuck to my guns that during truelly craptastic weather, only heavy stouts and winter brews should be consumed. With the day off from work, I was able to do just that and also add some respect back to the use of the Naked Fish glass. Finally, it was time to get my buzz on with the Bells Java Stout. Still very solid despite the blurry picture. Next up a new favorite. The Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout. Yum. Very smooth with a nice subtle hop kick thrown in. First up, an old favorite. The North Coast Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. Despite being a fairly old bottle, it held up pretty darn well.
