DerekRx
Tonight I decided to start off with something new to me from Left Hand before finishing the night with Breakfast. Just plain awesome, loaded with coffee flavors, creamy and easy to drink. If only it was appropriate to start the morning off with one of these, I'd have breakfast more often! Finally, time for Breakfast in a bottle, Founder's Breakfast Stout, one of the top beers in the world Tastes a little of hot dog water, but fairly decent with some nice clove and banana flavors Left Hand's Haystack Wheat from Colorado
Rugged One
Some more Fall drinking from earlier this week. Eh, not too bad. Fairly sweet but had some citrus notes and hop bitterness that threw me for a loop. Time for another somewhat local Oktoberfest. This one courtesty of Flying Fish in NJ. Kim's gives me a hand with this one. It was a little thin in the body but was just as advertised. Lots of Pecan nuttiness and sweet caramel notes. That's right, it's the Abita Pecan Harvest Ale, a Brown Ale brewed with real Pecans. As they say down South, "it's pronouned pee-can, not puh-con". Now that it's finally getting colder and actually starting to feel like fall, we figured that we'd get into this six pack of the latest fall seasonal from a brewery that's a little hit or miss for us. Bubba83
^ Boo Flyers... Go Sharks!!! Pecan sounds pretty good... I need to get to BevMo again soon because I have been all out for a few days. And you guys probably thought I had photos piling up! Maybe I'll post a picture of my authentic German Stein that I bought when I was in Boppard, Germany back on Spring Break in my Junior year of Highschool. That was my one souvenier pretty much. By the way, if you ever go to Germany, DO NOT miss the little towns along the Rhine River on your way from Mainz to Cologne. This was the best part of our trip, they brew some excellent Kolsch's and make some excellent wines around those parts. There are also awesome castle ruins and great food... Rugged One
^ Would you like me to wear a Sharks jersey next time I post Bubba? I've got one. By the way, the other night I had something from out your way. Well it tasted as advertised, like a beefed up Hefe that hide it's 7.5% alcohol pretty well. This had a fantastic banana smell as it warmed but unfortunately the taste really couldn't keep pace. If you find it, I'd recommend trying it a least once if you've never had the style. The Imperial Hefeweizen. Part of the Pyramid Brewers Reserve 2007 line.
Bubba83
^ Ooh you have a Sharks Jersey??? Definitely wear it! Is anyone's name on it? I've been looking for the Imperial Hefe for a while, but for some reason BevMo here doesn't carry much Pyramid, except for maybe the regular hefe, and a seasonal or two, all in sixers... I'm not quite as impressed with BevMo as I was at first. They do some changing with the seasons, but it doesn't seem to be quick enough nor do they get stuff that's a little more rare. I've talked to the manager there a bunch of times, who knows a good bit about beer, not all that much but he's solid... Last time I went the internet said they had both Stone 11th Black IPA and Jubelale, well, they had neither. He told me the way their stock works on the internet is they devote an item number to a seasonal from each company, so basically if they still have old stock left of the old seasonal (in this case 7/7/07 for Stone and Twilight Ale for Deschutes) then it shows as them having the next thing, even though they don't. Needless to say, it's a pretty terrible system. So I asked about them getting those two in, and also I told him about The Abyss that's coming in December, if there's any way he could get it in stock. He pretty much explained how despite the fact that he's the manager for the Sunnyvale store, he makes no decisions as to their stock, and some guys who doesn't even work at the store make those decisions. He said he'd talk to them but they don't usually listen. Anyways, here's the pictures of my stein as promised. And here's a picture of Marienplatz in Munich. It's the central square in Munich, which is a pretty awesome city. The old and new city hall are shown here. The new city hall includes the Glockenspiel (Bell Tower) which is the tall building you see there. Bayern is German for Bavaria. This is their state flag. Bayern is the largest and oldest German state. This is Neuschwanstein, the 19th century amazing castle in Bavaria for King Ludwig II. If it looks familiar to you, that's because Disney modeled their castle after this one.
ParkTrips
I only have one photo for the beer thread this week, even though I had a lot more than just this one beer. I didn't actually use my point-n-shoot the entire trip, and only have a few camera phone pics. But, here is the best part of EPCOT's Food and Wine festival, wurst on a pretzel roll with Beck's Oktoberfest The beer was later mixed with the Beverly and it didn't really taste any better or worse... just to give you an idea of what I thought of Beck's Oktoberfest
DerekRx
Another weekend spent having lots of fun, and lots of beer. First off, Friday night. Just middle of the road for the style, not much flavorings from the pumpkin or from the spices. Another beer for the season, New Holland Brewing's Ichabod, a pumpkin ale from Michigan Starting to get a little funky from the hops, but still pretty good stuff To start off the night, my final bottle of Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale
DerekRx
Saturday it was off to the Allentown area for another one of Tom's infamous parties, this time Halloween themed. Finally, Nicole gets a chance to partake in all the fun! and so, another one of Tom's Parties goes in the books. But fear not, I suspect another one will be only a few months away! and after a few more Oktoberfests, I decided to end the night with an IPA from Davidson Brothers up in New York Eventually Tom broke out a bottle of the St. Bernardus ABT 12 60th Anniversary for us to enjoy moments before his birthday As much as Ellen loved the Oktoberfest and shots, she had to keep her head in the game. Go Sox! Tom lines up some shots for those partaking, this time Apple Korn, apple schnapps. Also dangerously easy to drink, like cider I repositioned myself right next to the taps so I could keep going back for more Pschorr whenever I wanted without having to bug the bartender or get up These things are easier to drink than water and she also decided to do a shout out to all our friends in the UK. There it's WKD, here it's WLD, but it'll always be Windex to us yeah, I think she likes it Nicole also finally got to try one of the finest lambics out there, Chapeau Banana Loaded with coffee and chocolate flavors, Nicole was digging it too as were the rest of us stout lovers. I hope this one becomes a regular brew for Troegs Heath brought some Troeg's newest scratch beer, #5, an Imperial Oatmeal Stout with him for us to enjoy. Tom seems pleased Kim and Nicole wanted in on that, and did several shots throughout the evening. Hey, they were staying over, no need to drive anywhere a little while later Adam, Ellen, and the neighbors showed up ready for some shots of Baja Luna Heath and Kim finally showed up after their time at Troegs and it was time to let the Festing begin. Here Heath goes with the Hacker Pschorr while Nicole enjoys a Stoudt's Oktoberfest Not wanting to pass out before midnight, Tom started off with some Miller Lite, which I just can't bring myself to do! Still waiting for people to arrive, I decided to go with Shipyard's Pumpkinhead, one of the better pumpkin ales, though lite in pumpkin, it's loaded with spice mmmm, sweetness, even better fresh from the tap! We'd all have plenty of these throughout the night Showing up to Tom's house before anyone else, I got first crack at the newest keg for the season, Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest, one of my favorites
DerekRx
Another Left Hand beer for me this evening, their Pale Ale. Another good call pale ale. Well balanced between malt and hops. Sweet and doughy malt and earthy hops with some citrus notes like oranges Jackman's American Pale Ale from Left Hand Brewing. Not sure who Jackman is though, maybe Wolverine? DerekRx
Tonight it was finally time for me to break opened my bottle of Harvest before it loses too much of it's hop kick. Yum! It may still be better on tap, but it's also one of my favorite beers of the year from a bottle Thanks to this coming in a big bottle, I finally get to enjoy 2 glasses in a row tonight More maltiness picked up in the bottled version, but it's still got that great fresh hop punch to it After having this on tap several times before, I'm glad to see they've finally bottled it this year, though seemingly limited
ParkTrips
Went to the fridge today looking for some beer and I ended up getting 2 for a transatlatic showdown However, in the end, and as much as I hate to say it, I think Brother Thelonius wins out. Despite the stronger presence of alcohol (its really only a 1% ABV difference but the taste seems like more than that) it still has a better taste, even as it has started to warm up. Sure, I'd still rather have an abt 12, but finally I found an American brew that - in my mind - beats a highly-ranked Belgian opponent. Great job North Coast!! Now over to the Belgian product... and it did not disappoint! It was a fine ale with a bit more smoothness like I want. The first taste went to the challenger, and my goodness it was a great one! The malt taste was superb, but the alcohol was a bit more noticeable than I like! After the pout, I had to give the appearence edge to BT. I dunno if I simply poured it badly, but the St. Bernardus had a huge head. Duvel-like, really. Thelonius was also a bit darker Tonight featured 2 bombers of Belgian ales. To the left we have the American challenger, Brother Thelonius from California's North Coast Brewing. To the right, St. Bernardus Prior 8, the highest ranked dubble on BA this side of Westvleteren
Bubba83
^ Keep getting North Coast stuff whenever you can find it. I've tried a bunch of stuff from them and it is all excellent. I have not tried that St. Bernardus brew yet but I have tried Brother Thelonius and I agree it is excellent, though not as good as Abt 12. Then again, I haven't had a dark belgian better than Abt 12 yet. In other news I finally got to BevMo today, this time a different one in a neighboring city because I was too impatient waiting for the Sunnyvale store to get some Jubelale in stock. Also, we had a 5.6 earthquake just about an hour ago here! Exciting stuff the night before Halloween... I hope it doesn't effect the turnout because I'm doing my house up nice. I will post pictures of my pumpkin pretty soon here too, one of the best I've carved yet! (I'm not very good at pumpkin carving)
Hattuchili
I am in Sao Paulo, Brazil for nearly 6 weeks and had no beer so far, till yesterday. We went to a German restaurant, called Braugarten. There I had some great "german" food and a nice, cold Paulaner. I think the next time I should try some brazilian beer!? --Soren and a nice atmosphere great food great taste, as always Paulaner Braugarten
DerekRx
^Nice to see you finally found a place to go to get some beer, Soren! Thanks for sharing the pictures, at least you got a little bit of home there with you. Here's some other places in your area that you may want to check out at some point: Beerfly- Sao Paulo It's Halloween today, and I can't think of a more perfect beer for tonight than one of the best pumpkin ales out there. Sadly, it'll probably be the last one I have for the year, as it's almost time for the Christmas ales. One of the best pumpkin ales out there and a great batch this season. Lots of powerful tastes just like pumpkin pie, but with alcohol burn and not as creamy. The only downside to this one is the higher ABV than most of the other pumpkins, meaning you can't drink a whole lot of them without feeling the effects, unlike Pumpkinhead and others. Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin Ale, 8% alcohol, but 100% loaded with pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove

Bubba83
Here are some pictures from the last two days! Halloween and Beer pictures ahead! Here's my uncles pumpkin... That's all folks! Hope you enjoyed my halloween update. We had a good turnout despite the earthquake scare the night before. Our styrofoam graves from the old Gyro's Frightfest my dad's friend used to run. It's starting to get a wee bit darker outside, here's a picture of my pumpkin lit up. My "costume" I bought this mask like 7-8 years ago... Good to see it held up well while I was away at college. I had gloves on and all so no one could see flesh. Basically I would stand or sit somewhere and act fake, totally stoic, and the kids would wonder if I real real or not. Then I would jump at them (if they were old enough to not feel bad about scaring them of course) It moves our stuffed guy's arm up and down of course! Key #2 connected to some fishing line, what will this control? See next picture. and the wire that makes the zipline from our gutter to our planter in the front walkway... Oh dear, there's a big spider ziplining up and down! It's Halloween and I'm setting up... Wire attached to my keys! I liked it! It's got some good spices in it, with some nice malty flavors in the background, a great mouthfeel, and just enough hops to make it well balanced in every direction. This is one of the first holiday ales I have had, so I will see how it rates compared to others I am sure. Followed up by the beer I have been looking forward to most, Deschutes Jubelale! The head didn't stick around long. I thought this was really good though, a nice mouthfeel and some great malty flavors. The night before Halloween I had a Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen to start off the night...
DerekRx
Nice setup, dude. We did nothing interesting other than handed out bags of candy. No decorations or anything like that, even though we wanted to. Maybe next year. The red hair was part of my Halloween costume for work. I went as the Devil, horns and all. I wanted to be the Grim Reaper, but management didn't care much for that idea in a hospital setting. Well, it's now November, kinda a bummer, meaning winter is well on the way. Luckily I've got some brews saved up to help me ease my way into it. Surprisingly, still awesome stuff. Hop character and loads of chocolate and coffee. This definitely helps me prepare for hibernation Follow that up with last year's Winter Ale from Mendocino Whoa, a little bit wee heavy on the alcohol at 8% that it doesn't mask much, but very good with lots of sweet maltiness First up, Duck-Rabbit's Wee Heavy Scotch Style Ale, all the way from Farmville, North Carolina
Scaparri
I unfortunately don't this very often 'cause there aren't any stores I know of around here that carry a superb beer selection, plus I'm po'. Anyway, tonight I had Leinenkugel's Apple Spice. It is a very fruity beer, much like their Berry Weiss. It's got a very strong cider flavor with lighter cinnamon flavor. It makes for a very tasty combo, but just like the Berry Weiss, they could definitely tone back the fruit flavors a little. I'd prefer it to be more like Buffalo Bill's Orange Cream Ale, where there is a very noticeable citrus flavor, but you still get a full ale flavor. The flavors in the Apple Spice over power the beer flavor a little too much. Despite the lack of a beer taste, it still gets my nod. Oh, that's a nice cider flavor.
