My 2008 Dodge Avenger SXT

Recommended Posts

^ After further review, you're probably right.

That is why I drove some awful cars back then. Cheaper to insure. And I don't need a car to define me.

Same here I remember doing the math when I was about that age, and finding out that insurance for the year was more expensive than the car

When I first got my license, my insurance was never more than $90 a month. That's mostly because I have a perfect driving record, graduated Cum Laude from my high school, drive a 1994 Honda Accord (still going strong lol), and the biggest part, my insurance agent is my neighbor. He was able to work in some discounts that wouldn't have been able to be had if we went through someone else. I think for the four people in my family that drive to be insured on all five of our cars is around $5000 a year. The most expensive to insure is my dad's 1992 Mustang. Only he and my mom are insured to drive that vehicle, but that bumps up the cost of insurance quite a bit.

I still have my car from high school...... Wait, my 4th car from high school. Yeah, I had some bad luck with cars back in the day. But my '98 Chevy Lumina is still chugging along at 180,000 miles strong, faded hood, dented rear bumper, rusted door and all.

No car for me yet. The goverment is giving me free public transport as long as I'm in University.

I do look around sometimes, try to score a $1500 2nd-handed BMW, but still, it would cost me $110/month insurance, not counting taxes.

So I'll just stick with the public transport, having the only advantage of being free.

I just have to pay $200 a month for car insurance.

$2400 a year? You're getting screwed, or you're a terrible driver with really bad grades.

Matt - you never had to pay car insurance in New Jersey. It's not cheap.

Nice ride Matt, but where the hell do you get the money for a car and two consegutive TPR-trips?

Well I'm cheap & don't spend my money on random crap like video games & DVDs. I just have to pay $200 a month for car insurance. I get two paychecks a month both over $200 so I use the first check for my car & the second one for whatever.

Translation: I didn't pay for the car, I don't pay rent and I eat the free food that gets placed in the refrigerator and cabinets.

^No offense, but he is only 18. Frankly, isn't that the point of parenting? To provide for your kid until they are capable of fully providing for themselves? I don't necessarily agree with parents buying their kids new cars (I got a lovely 1994 Honda Accord. Love it though lol) but why would he have to pay rent or buy his own groceries? I think the negative undertone you wrote that with isn't really appropriate since he's still in high school. 99 percent of people at that age live(d) under the same circumstances as he does. Myself included. Just because someone doesn't pay for rent or buy their own groceries at that age doesn't mean anything other than their parents are providing properly for them. At least he's not driving around in an insanely expensive car as I see happen all the time. Most expensive car I've ever seen a kid his age or younger driving around in was a Maserati Gran Turismo. Daddy got a promotion and wanted to buy his only son a present. A Dodge Avenger, although very nice for a teenager, is not an absurdly expensive or nice car. Honestly, I think it's pretty appropriate of a vehicle for an 18 year old.

Obvisouly, you don't read larry's posts too often.

I'll just tell you in my parent's house, if I could spend my money on non essential items like goofy spoilers for a car, they'd slap me upside the head, and would have made me start paying rent.

^Lol, well it wasn't fully aimed at him, it was more of the fact that this kid was just trying to talk about his car and has basically been made fun of for four pages. I'm not a fan of adding parts to cars that aren't necessary, but if he wants to spend his money on adding a scoop or a spoiler, let him, it'll stimulate his local economy lol. It's a hobby just like any other (just like riding roller coasters) and he's being put down because of it. I understand it's basically all just joking and messing around, but some of it is a little too much.

And I know what you mean about your parents looking at you like you're crazy for spending money on something like this. The most I've ever spent on my car was $700...to replace the massive hole in my exhaust and broken catalytic converter. But I know plenty of people that want to change the aesthetics of their cars and I have no problem with this. It's not hurting anyone and at least he's not adding spinners, vinyls, underglow, etc. His additions, although unnecessary, are tastefully done, so I give him props for customizing his car to his liking.

Its not so much adding a wing which bugged me personally.. its putting a wing on a car that shouldn't have one! Fast cars, ok. (and even then its a stretch, I'm generally against big ones like that) Slow ecoboxes, not so much. I think a hood scoop would make the car look bad. Its like putting a Dodge Neon on 22s.. it just looks stupid

My comment was not meant to be an indictment on the kid. Hyyper asked me how he could afford a new car and it clear that the original poster could not afford to "finance" a new car on his own. I'm pretty much just restating the obvious in my own comical way.

I actual respect the fact that speeddeamon rarely wastes money on things that are not essential (except the theme park hobby), that is commendable.

^ Eh. I'm just saying that DVD's and CD's might not be random crap to some people, as they may be just as passionate about movies or music as Matt is about roller coasters. I was just trying to make a point off of what he had said earlier.

Right, and a lot of us have jobs because the American consumer loves to buy random crap he/she doesn't need. It might be silly, but it keeps many of us employed.

Wow I've been gone for four days & my thread turned into this! jmicha I laughed at larrygator's post but thanks for defending me I don't understand why some of you think putting a spoiler, decals, & other stuff on my car is lame? Do a google image search on Dodge Avengers & see what other people have done to their Avengers. There are plenty of Avengers driving around my area & I want to make mine look different. As for the money deal I'm still in high school (graduate June 22 ) so yeah I still live at home. I have a job to help with the car even though I'm not paying for all of it. I rarely go to the mall or stores just to shop. I want a career in the theme park industry so most of my money is put into TPR trips & my own trips.

I think the whole point is that 80% of cars with hood scoops and spoilers, do not need them. They do not affect the performance of the car, whatsoever.

Ever heard the term "put lipstick on a pig"? Its kind of like that.

No offense intended, just saying a lot of people giggle when they see cars like that.

Exactly Loopy, Spoilers that are performance driven are for rwd cars. The Spoiler adds downforce which keeps the rear wheels planted.

You want to talk about a Diamond company car that has a hood scoop, here is a cool one. Road Runner with air grabber hood scoop. You flip a switch and an electric motor opens it.
