it Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 what is a lipstick cam and how much does it cost, where can i buy one?\ thanks
CoasterFanatic Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 As a wise man once said "Google is your friend" Here are some examples/prices: http://www.mysimon.com/4007-6720_8-0.html?qt=lipstick+camera // good ones aren't cheap and cheap ones aren't good
it Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 ^Thanks......But thats a little bit too pricy. The link didn't have a picture though
CoasterFanatic Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Yep. There are cheap crappy ones out there, but the better ones are more expensive that you would guess. Also, you still have to find something to feed it into. That means you have to either purchase a compatible camera or get a stand-alone recorder.
coaster1 Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Yeah there are some nice ones out there that will connect to you MiniDV/DV camera, but they aren't cheap at all. bhphotovideo.com has photos of the products, but most are special order so if it dont work, your stuck with the item
robbalvey Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 A "good one" like the one we have, will cost you between $500 and $1000, and then you also have to have a DV cam or a DV deck to plug it into. If you're just want to 'go shoot some POV' it's not worth it. But if you are investing time and money into making coaster videos, then I reccomend it. Also, you can't just go slapping your lipstick cam onto a coaster train, that's sure to get you kicked out of a park! All of times we have used the equipment it's been through the park's PR or management with special permission. --Robb
it Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 so what should you recomend for a POV and its small. i found some really good stuff at spy ware stores.but they all have to be hooked to a monitor. i am looking for something small and un-noticable under $200 and wire-less.
CoasterFanatic Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 i am looking for something small and un-noticable under $200 and wire-less. Seriously, the camera you described doesn't exist. Sounds like you are trying to be a little sneaky about it.

LMAO!!! Yeah, Ted is right! What you are looking for doesn't exist. I mean, our lipstick camera was about $700 and it's not wireless, and it's certainly NOT un-noticable. It has it's own battery back, a seperate mic, and wires leading to the deck. To buy equipment like this, it's serious cash, not cheap stuff. We use the same lipstick camera that is used on Fear Factor. You're not going to find something for less than $500, let alone $200. --Robb
DenDen Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 LOL! OMFG! I wanted one of these when these came out in the 80's. Heck, you can now get digtal for the same price. LOL
it Posted July 1, 2005 Author Posted July 1, 2005 sorry...find then.a cam corder that is wire less and under $500
CoasterFanatic Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Wireless? You can go to you nearest Wal-Mart and get this "pretty good" cam for about $375. // Wishes the prices were this low when I blew a grand on a camera.
Jeezus Juice Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 ^ Also that camera fits in your pocket. You should fasten some kind of leash to secure your camera to yourself before shooting any POVs. Oh, and uh...make sure your get park permission and stuff like I always do. And if your falling into a fountain, be sure to throw your camera into a nearby flowerbed as you go down. Which is exactly the opposite of what I did last week. Jeezus "My camera is working again, but its pretty pissed at me" don
it Posted July 5, 2005 Author Posted July 5, 2005 cool, but cant you just ask the park for permission?the handy cam looks cool, but wont it bust with high G forces?
coaster1 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Phoning the PR department IS contacting the park, the only ones that can give you the for sure ok. Ride ops may give you permission, but most parks that is still breaking the rules.
it Posted July 5, 2005 Author Posted July 5, 2005 Ride ops may give you permission, but most parks that is still breaking the rules. what if the ride op says no but the manager guy or what ever says yes?
CoasterFanatic Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 ^ You will have to use your best judgement in all decisions. // no advice here
coaster1 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 I wont get into that either .. but the PR people talk with the operations people to find out what would be required for their approval of doing it on rides. Some parks will allow simply holding it .. others will duct tape it to you hand and some will flat out just say no.
robbalvey Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Let me quote a post I made from this thread a while ago: http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17014 Unless you are a member of the media, that includes: television, newspapers, magazines, online publications with a solid reputation, you are just wasting the parks time...and yours. Instead, this is what I recommend to help build your sites reputation. Start with good photo updates or if you want to do videos so bad, do them WITHOUT pov! You don't need POV to make a GREAT coaster video! For example, everyone loved our Hersheypark/Storm Runner video, and there wasn't any Storm Runner POV in it at all! Websites are going to be the lowest priority for most parks because there are so many of them out there. Unless you are one of the top sites on Google (for example, Google "theme park videos" and you'll see who comes up first!) in the first couple of pages, most parks won't give you the time of day. If you want to build your sites reputation it takes TIME. Seriously. It takes LOTS of time and patience For example, even this site has only recently reached the threshold that it's at, and we've been around for 9 years! It didn't happen overnight. It's been a very long-term investment for us. Keep that in mind when asking for filming or any other special permission and don't be upset if you are turned down. That should just give you an incentive to strive to do more work on your site! So please, unless you are a member of the media, which means a television station, radio, magazine, or a reputable website, please do not go calling PR departments at parks! They have enough to do every day without having to field calls from people who just want to go shoot POV for thier own uses. --Robb
benzo41190 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 If you want POV's or on ride videos, start small and work up. When I got my camera this March, I first went to a few local fairs and shot on-ride videos. A carnival wont care about camera's(i tell them that it is straped to my hand and they always say yes). Then go to a small park on a dead day ( I went to Mt. Olympus and shot on all the rides and also Galaxy and Avalanche). Usually if its a small park the Op's usually dont care. Then start a website and post your videos on there and keep doing that till you get a couple thousand page views (from what I heard this site has been up for ten years, so it might take awhile). Then once you have a popular site then you should have a better time with getting permission. If you dont have this kind of time you might get lucky here and there, and just go to a park on a dead day, you may get lucky. I did at SFGAm on it first week of operation.
arrowfanman Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 ADMIT EDIT! Edited one of the most idiotic things someone could EVER post! Let me remind you: "If you're going to make a post bragging about breaking park rules, which includes but it not limited to: sneaking cameras on rides, line jumping, standing up on coasters, or any other park rule, you're account will be deleted and your IP address banned." Arrowfanman, you are very lucky that I am a nice person and will give you a 2nd chance. But it I ever...EVER see anything like what you posted, your IP address, account, everything will be banned! --Robb
CoasterFanatic Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 .... and you brag about it here! Do you realize that Robb has a very good relationship with many parks and doesn't want you airing the guerilla camera BS on his forums. I .... just .... don't .... care!
