The Ugliest Building on Earth!

Recommended Posts

As stated above, this building would have looked much better if they had used better materials to construct it. And IMO this isnt the worst placement for a building I have seen, anyone heard of the centre pompidou? While it looks interesting, its placement is awful nestled among some of the cities oldest buildings. It really sticks out like a sore thumb.

While on that topic, don't forget that Cincinnati has an abandoned subway... parts of it were completed, but it sadly never saw a train pass through.

Whoa! cincinnati had a subway system? I lived there 7 years and never knew that

^^ I think it is a couple of hundred pre approved people. And when you are let in the country, you can only visit Pyongyang. And when in Pyongyang, you cant talk to any of the locals and you are escorted by a host at all times.

The building would have been completed if it weren't for the famines that the country suffered during the time it was under construction. Personally, I would like to know what was going though their minds when building such a massive hotel in a closed country that has little to no tourism.

^^ It's only 100 or so Stories. It also has around 1000 rooms, 7 Revolving restaurants, and was scheduled to open in time for the 1989 World Festival of youth and students.

I've seen this hotel many a time before, and i have been thoroughly researching it, as there has been some rather dumb comments posted about it.

It was originally built so that it could help turn North Korea into a Tourist Hub, and so that Western Investors would have a place to stay when they Stepped into the North Korean market. It has also been reported that it was made as a Soviet Response to the Westin Stamford hotel in Singapore a few years before construction started in 1987. It is made out of reinforced Concrete.

Problems regarding Building materials and the building method being used delayed the construction of the hotel, and in 1992, due to lack of funding, electrical shortages and the famine that was in N.Korea at the time.

Currently, the building has no windows or fittings in it, however the frame has been complete. The North Korean Government is also trying to gain a foreign Investment of around $300 mil to finish the hotel. However, The hotel has now been removed off of maps and stamps, and is being replaced by a hotel with a much more conventional Design, the "Taedong River hotel".

But what do i know, I'm just a kid, right?

EDIT: On Tourism, North Korea's tourism rates are growing, as more and more people are becoming fascinated by the country's soviet architecture and bizarre lifestyle and monuments, as well as the Mayday festival, however you can only go around with your guide.

This reminds me of a building I saw on a History Channel show about demolition and what not of big buildings and hotels. Well, there was a project of demolishing a never used Hilton Hotel in the middle east the was barley used. The was in the middle of the battle grounds! It had like a trillion bullet holes in it!

I wonder who'd be crazy enough to invest in N. Korea. It would be incredibly easy for them to say "the people thank you for the building, you have 4 hours to get the hell out of our country" after the project is complete.

As an aside, I actually kinda like this building. It's bizarre.
