Yankee cannonball Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Okay, so 200' is a hypercoaster, 300' is a gigicoaster, 400' is a stratacoaster. What the hell will 500' be? a coasterzilla?
RIP Psyclone Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I've heard the term "terracoaster" but it's also used to mean basically a terrain coaster, or one that spends a lot of time close to the ground.
Yankee cannonball Posted December 21, 2007 Author Posted December 21, 2007 Terracoaster would describe maverick, and would make me think the coaster is made of Terra Cotta
the sound Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Well, for a start, there isn't any 500' coasters, so i don't think this is something that really you should worry about. But, i would say it would be called a Mesocoaster.
Carnage Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Whatever pointless buzzword Cedar Fair decides to come up with. I still say Maverick being a terrain coaster is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.
ebl Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Aside from ridiculous, I think it would depend on who builds it. Intamin = Most likely fun. Vekoma = Torture Eric
sixflagsguy5 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 It'll probably be whatever one the head designer of the ride decides unless the park wants to use a certain term for advertising purposes. It's very doubtful that a park would do this, but you never know. If it is done I would guess that it would be Intamin.
Team Thriller Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I think a 500 foot tall coaster would be called and 'O-Zone Coaster'. Because they named the Stratacoaster because "it almost touched the Stratousphere." This "Almost touched the O-Zone layer." --James
Hurricane Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Hmmm... if they DO name it a "O-zone" Coaster, will the theme song be the Numa Numa Song?
Yankee cannonball Posted December 22, 2007 Author Posted December 22, 2007 If Vekoma made the first 500' coaster, I would simultaneously have a heart attack and develop a double hernia
benzo41190 Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 A waste of money. YES! But I honestly don't see the point of a 500ft coaster. I could see a drop tower ride or a sky coaster.....but not A coaster.
the sound Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 If Vekoma made the first 500' coaster, I would simultaneously have a heart attack and develop a double hernia Why would Vekoma make it anyway? I don't understand. Besides, newer vekoma rides are apparently "Smooth".
niiicolaaah Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Hey, you never know... just look at Magnum. "They said it couldn't be done. They said a coaster that high would require a chain lift to get the train up the second hill." I *really* HOPE Intamin never makes a 500 ft version of Kingda Ka....
Yankee cannonball Posted December 26, 2007 Author Posted December 26, 2007 Hey, you never know... just look at Magnum. "They said it couldn't be done. LOL, you're like "anything is posssible...Ijust wish it weren't "
ebl Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 A 500 ft. version of Kingdom Come is entirely possible. It's only, what 45 feet taller? A bit more power and 500 ft. up you'll go. Pointless, but possible. Eric
Carnage Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 ^ I'd say that's just about the only possible way. Physically, a park could build a traditional 500 footer. But it would cost so much that it'd just be cheaper to build an entire park from scratch. Probably the only company that could afford to build such an attraction would be Disney. And they don't build massive thrill rides.
downunder Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 I don't see it happening anytime soon, it wouldn't be a good commercial decision for any park at the moment. A 500 foot drop would be easier if it was from an elevated point ie 300 foot one side and 500 foot over the edge for the drop, obviously Cedar Point couldn't do this, Magic Mountain, hmmm.
Tanks4me05 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Or even better, Kennywood. They have the terrain. (I know, they wouldn't build anything that big at this time.)
downunder Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Kennywood have made excellent use of their terrain, love that 2nd drop on Phantom. You could certainly make a big coaster much more efficient by having a shorter lift hil than the drop, I love that idea of dropping off into a ravine or something. Where Superman the Escape is at the moment would be a good place for this type of ride.
sirdss Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 They have been talking about something like this at Vegas's Stratosphear for a while now...
Carnage Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 ^ Only talk though. Seems the locals are against having a loud roller coaster next door.
Yankee cannonball Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 ^would they even hear it, being 900 something feet above them? or would the drop go from 500' to ground level?
Carnage Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 ^ The plan was a 750ish foot fishhook coaster. Meaning it would drop straight down the tower, and then pull out across the street. So yes the coaster would make quite a bit of noise that the locals could hear. They were going to build it, but it got shot down. Last I heard they were hoping to make a much smaller version. No idea though what the chances of that happening are.
