Sir Clinksalot Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 ^ Agreed about Tarantino's cameo. It was distracting and really the only part that I didn't like about the movie. But I do agree about the way he went out. Kind of made it worth it.
Double0Kevin Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Saw Hansel and Gretel yesterday. I'm not usually into the "Classic Fairy Tale with a Twist" kind of movies, but this one was pretty good. It won't win any types of awards or anything, but it was enjoyable to watch. Gemma Arterton looked hot as always.
cfc Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 ^It was number 1 at the box office last weekend, as well, with a take of $19 million. Of course, it's competition was largely crap, sprinkled with Oscar contenders that people have probably already seen, so that's not saying much.
Rollercoaster Rider Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Saw Hansel and Gretel yesterday. I'm not usually into the "Classic Fairy Tale with a Twist" kind of movies, but this one was pretty good. It won't win any types of awards or anything, but it was enjoyable to watch. Gemma Arterton looked hot as always. How was it compared to Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter or Cowboys and Aliens?
Double0Kevin Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Didn't see Abe, but it was more fun than Cowboys and Aliens (which I think ultimately failed because it took itself too seriously). I did like C&A though, and it's tough to choose between Gemma Arterton and Olivia Wilde.
Sir Clinksalot Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Watched a couple more Oscar Nominated movies over the weekend: Life of Pi This is one I wasn't really looking forward to but it absolutely blew me away. An absolutely enchanting movie and very well done. Great effects, great story and absolutely touching. Definitely recommended. Silver Linings Playbook Absolutely amazing performances all the way around. I know Jennifer Lawrence is getting all of the accolades, and deservedly so, but Bradley Cooper was so good in this. I remember seeing him all the way back when he was on Alias so seeing the actor he's become is really awesome. Also, one of the unsung hero's of this movie is Chris Tucker. He was really great in this and very easily could have received a supporting actor nomination as well. Only have 2 Best Picture movies left to watch. Lincoln (which I'm going to go see tomorrow) and Amour. I probably won't catch Amour because I really don't have any interest in watching it and it's not playing anywhere near me.
alilstronger Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Saw Identify Theft this past weekend. I normally do not go see these types of movies at the movies but my mom wanted to go so I took her. I will admit I was pleasantly surprised - it is really funny with quite a few good one liners. Melissa McCarthy is showing, in my opinion, that she can be very open as an actress and go from playing the pretty girl to a tough girl. She is slowly becoming one of my favorites. Can not wait to see her in The Heat with Sandra Bullock.
Double0Kevin Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I also went and saw Identity Thief, unlike the post above, I was pretty disappointed with it. I had more laughs watching the trailer the first time than I did in the actual film. It also bugged me how many extra story lines there were that never seemed to get resolved or even explained in the first place. Melissa McCarthy was definitely the highlight with Jason Bateman playing the same character he plays in every film he's ever been in. I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their money though, just wait for it to be on TV. I also saw Taken 2 finally. Another one you won't need to write home about, but this one was still fun and had a lot of mindless action. If you liked the first one, you won't think this one is better, but you will still likely enjoy it.
jray21 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Saw Django last week and really liked it. It's a very well done movie, but I agree with Tarantino's cameo. But hey, it reminds you why he's a director, and not an actor! Also saw Hansel and Gretel a week ago. It was somewhat entertaining, and had lots of action, but you can't expect anything really good from a movie about Hansel and Gretel. The troll character was in it was pretty bad. It reminded me of a grown up and older Hoggel from Labyrinth. Just saw Argo. Really liked that movie. I think Ben Affleck did a great job directing it. It's a great spy movie based on stuff that didn't happen too long ago. I'm surprised that it was even de-classified since some of those people are still alive.
Sir Clinksalot Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Finally saw Lincoln last night. It was good ... REALLY good. But to be honest, I just wasn't as blown away as I was with Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django and Life of Pi. I'm sure Spielberg will win the director (although it should be Ben Affleck who got robbed IMO). I'm sure Daniel Day Lewis will win best actor even though I think Bradley Cooper and Denzel were better in their respective movies.
DCA_Chris Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Grabbed The ABC's of Death off iTunes the other night. Wow. There were definitely a few in there that were lower quality than the rest, but overall the amount of stellar shorts made this one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Standouts were definitely D is for Dogfight, G is for Gravity, and Z is for Zetsumetsu. My head didn't stop spinning after Z for about an hour. Here's a preview for anyone who happens to have never heard of it: [youtu_be]http://youtu.be/UFgrFENQ4oQ[/youtu_be] It's the red band trailer, so be 18+!
alilstronger Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 ^ As much as I am obsessed with horror movies this preview does nothing for me. I have known about this movie for about 6 months now and I will probably wait to get it via Netflix.
alilstronger Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 ^ I have heard of it. I am waiting for it to come via Netflix. Sucks when you have 480 DVDs on your Netflix list and I want to watch too many at once so move them all around. I am usually maxed out at 500.
alilstronger Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I don't pay for streaming because I have nothing to stream through. Plus when you do the DVD version you get over double the options for movies then with streaming.
DCA_Chris Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Oh woah! You're the first person I've met that has the DVD plan. I had no idea DVD players still even existed!
jray21 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I have both, but the DVD plan has the Blu-Ray option added. The dvd plan has a ton more movies available, and a lot of more of the new releases. Plus, we live right at a hub, so it only takes 1-2 days to get the movie.
alilstronger Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I have both, but the DVD plan has the Blu-Ray option added. The dvd plan has a ton more movies available, and a lot of more of the new releases. Plus, we live right at a hub, so it only takes 1-2 days to get the movie. I am happy to see that someone else actually has the DVD version. I always have my list maxed out at 500 movies.
Philrad71 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 We have streaming, DVD's and Blu-Ray and enjoy it all very much. I did watch V/H/S last week on streaming...definitely creepy.
molemaster43 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Hotel Transylvania: Amusing family movie with tons of good humor. I thought Adam Sandler did a really good job in his role as Dracula, but his daughter annoyed me as the stereotypical teenage daughter. Overall, it was pretty good. Here Comes the Boom: I thought this movie was pretty good. I like how it doesn't throw humor down your throat all the time, but has enough to keep the movie entertaining and enjoyable. I am a fan of Kevin James and I wanted to see this movie. It had a unique plot and a feel good story and ending. I definitely recommend seeing this. It is just pure fun throughout the whole movie.
cfc Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I caught Silver Linings Playbook yesterday and thought it was a good variation on a romantic comedy (a genre I've never cared much for).
azza29 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Having seen all of the Oscar-nominated films playing locally, I decided to give Movie 43 a go last week. It wasn't great, but not quite the turkey the reviews suggest. If you watch it from the perspective that the whole thing is a commentary on Hollywood as a whole it may even be a work of genius! There were some genuinely amusing parts, but as with a lot of sketch-based comedy the joke wore off well before the sketch ended in many scenes. And if Hugh Jackman/Kate Winslet/Halle Berry had been replaced by no-name actors their scenes would not have been nearly as funny. Overall I think it comes down to how much you like/tolerate gross-out humour.
Brandy524 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Danny and I had a Die Hard marathon last week leading up to seeing A Good Day to Die Hard on Friday night. I thought it was good. Danny said he had a hard time following who the bad guys were and what their motive was, but overall it was a good addition to the series. I didn't get up to go pee even thought I really needed to so that's a good endorsement!
alilstronger Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 ^ I wish I liked action movies. I finally saw Mama Saturday night. I enjoyed it till the end. I always give the ghost/spirit movies a shot because they are my favorite type of horror. I will admit there were some good jumps in it but once they started showing the ghost more and you saw how computerized it was it took away from the movie for me.
