Nrthwnd
Just read about this. Coming to Broadway in 2024. Music by Elton John. Hmmmm. I wonder if Jessica Chastain (who won the Oscar for the "Eyes of Tammy Faye" movie) ...... can sing?
Nrthwnd
...and while I was checking out something else (looking for the date of Original SPAMALOT opening...) at http://www.ibdb.com (great site for everything Broadway), I came across one of the musicals "coming to Broadway in 2024." I know it's a bit of a wait for it to open (Mar-April) next year, but knowing what "the score" consists of, has me Definitely Interested for it. And here's the website for the show. https://heartofrocknrollbway.com/ With the songs of Huey Lewis & The News! I also love this logo for the show. It would make a great pin!
Nrthwnd
Just wondering, but is anybody planning to see this? I was thinking of it, but we've already seen a tour of the show, so .....? ...and the "Prince of Egypt" London production also filmed (late 2022) and available to rent, currently. Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (who also wrote music & lyrics for "Wicked," "Pippin," "Godspell," to name a few). EDIT TO ADD (2024): They released a DVD of the production. So I bought it on Amazon. Easy! Edited April 2 by Nrthwnd DVD of production now available, thru Amazon.
Nrthwnd
I put her obit here, as it should be. Glynis Johns, the English actress who played the original Mrs. Banks in the film "Mary Poppins", and was the first actress to sing Stephen Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns" from the musical "A Little Night Music" ... has passed away at age 100. In "Mary Poppins", being a wife, a mother... and a suffragette, too! (1964) As Desiree Armfeldt in Sondheim's "A little Night Music". (1973) About to sing 'that song'.
Nrthwnd
Some new (and past 'new') musicals are about to release Original Cast Recordings in a a few weeks or so.... Sondheim's Final Scored Musical. Closed and Off-Brdwy, but still... Based on The Book. Based on The Movie. Now closed, but still..... Book of Mormon Reunion! (sort of) P.S. The 2024 TONY Awards' Nominations are happening on April 30th. And Ariana DeBose is hosting again, Woo Hoo! The CBS TONYS' Broadcast will air on Sunday, June 17th.
Nrthwnd
Well, the 2023-24 TONY NOMINATIONS are in, announced this morning. And.... Wow. Quite the eye opener, with what and who is nominated for what, etc etc. And the snubs. Here's The Official TONY Site's link ..... https://www.tonyawards.com/ As for the musicals nominated for Best.... I have no idea how they sound (no Cast CDs released just yet, see above post). It will be an interesting broadcast. With Ariana DeBose Hosting! Again! Woo hoo! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But by the way.... After the noms came out, a bunch of negative crap was aimed online, at "Stereophonic", for "being a play with music." And not, they screamed, a MUSICAL, "as it should have been nominated." Yeah. And I have another play with music nobody blinked on - the "Lady Day at the Bar and Grill" play that brought Audra McDonald her sixth TONY award? They even released a cd of the show, with all the songs and the 'drama' included. Shouldn't that have been a ..... jukebox musical? But it wasn't. And I don't remember that much being shot at her show. So chill, people! It's Show Biz!!! And for you Theatre Trivia Nerds - 12 SHOWS opened in the last nine days for TONY eligibility which this month was April 25th. Sheeesh.
BobloLives
Well kudos to Daniel Radcliffe for his first nomination. And Leslie Kritzer was AMAZING in Spamalot!
Nrthwnd
^ From the sounds of the Cast CD (one of the few I could get early enough), they all sound amazing in (the revival of) "Merrily, We Roll Along," Sondheim would be proud, I betcha.
pianojohn
I am always amazed at the number of shows that open right before the Tony deadline. And for the most part, these shows don't last a few months after the awards and they leave empty handed. I thought that was a waste of money to get the show all the way to Broadway only to close soon after. Yet having a show ON Broadway is a HUGE selling feature when the rights are released and every high school, college, and community theater is anxious to do your show. I predict the same fate for shows like How to Dance in Ohio, The Heart of Rock and Roll, and The Great Gatsby. Once you get the Broadway name attached to it, most people outside of NYC have no idea of the show's short history on the Great White Way.
Nrthwnd
^ I always thought the timing of those musicals was wierd, too. So many openings in such a small space of time, etc. All for the sake of being "under the wire" for TONY nominations. And whether it wins or loses TONYs, Lempicka has already posted a closing notice. The Good News is, they are releasing a Broadway Cast Album! Final performance on May 19th. More (probable) closings, to come.
Nrthwnd
Something I've just noticed.... Our Broadway Across Canada subscription for the 2024-25 season, includes four shows, and two add-ons, one of which I immediately bought tickets for...for two separate showings! But - looking at all of the tickets we've got, everybody now seems to be opening at a 7:30pm Curtain, although for years and years it's been the usual 8 o'clock openings. So, has the covid pandemic had anything to do with these new, somewhat earlier, curtain times? Just wondering.... What we're seeing, starting in January, actually. But this November.... One of the two add-ons we couldn't pass up on. And I also bought a second ticket for myself, for the Sunday aft. performance! But it, and all the other shows, are starting at 7;30 pm. So .....? Just curious, that's all.
