^ Pirates 2 sucked? What planet are you on? I do agree that S3 was a HUH-YUGE dissapointment, way too much love story in that one. Pirates 3 will definitely win out against these 3. I am not sure it will matter that much though. I think maybe the latest trailers for Transformers might help them compete with the 3. That movie looks amazing.

^I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to Spiderman that happened after Superman 2.

As for which movie will do better, IMO Spidey will make more money, but I think Pirates will end up being the best movie of the three.

Edit: ...now that I thought about it for a minute, I think Pirates may also take in more money. It's really going to be close.

Pirates II got bad reviews, but critics can't decide the opinions of anyone but themselves. I loved the second one, personally. Pirates III is the only one of these three that I know for certain I am going to see. If I get the opportunity to see Shrek III or Spiderman III, that's cool, but otherwise I don't really care enough to see them.

The report for the estimation of first weekend of Shrek 3 is out. It was estimated that the income for the first weekend was $122 million, which for sure knocked Spider-Man 3 out of the crown. Does it mean Shrek 3 will gross even more than Shrek 2 in USA and also ready to break a $1 billion mark around the world?

Spider-Man 3 still runs its popularity in second place. But with only $28.5 million on its third weekend, it seemed there's no way it will catch up with the movie Pirates 2, which also set record for one of the biggest domestic box office ever.

Other than these 2 movies, it seemed they all just went drastically down, excluding Disturbia which was again only had 25% fall.

So, the topic right now... Will Shrek 3 unexpectedly keep its crown next weekend? Or Pirates 3 will break another record that has been held by Spider-Man 3 for only 3 weeks? Can you predict?

If it goes like this, sure this year we have a chance to have the biggest year for film industry in recent decades. With Pirates 3 coming next weekend? Isn't it nice if there are 3 movies with opening weekend more than $100 million?

Looks like the 3rd installment for Spidey and Shrek wasn't as good as the first 2. If you have kids, they will of course love Shrek. To me it lacked some of the adult humor that made the first 2 appeal to everyone.

I just got back from seeing Pirates 3. Unfortunately, the movie, in my opinion, was by far the worst of the three. The plot was boring and there were only two or three major events throughout the movie. This would have been fine, but the movie is 2 hours and 48 minutes long. It dragged on and on. By the end of the movie, it was apparent that the audience was getting restless and wished that every scene would be the last, yet there was always another useless scene to follow. I would recomend seeing the movie if you like the series as your opinions may be completely different from mine, but I would only give it a 5/10.

^ I somewhat agree. I enjoyed it, but only as a result of the gags and attraction references. As a story...

However, I do think that it could very well take the crown. My local theatre dedicated about 9-10 theatres to screening Pirates 3 at 8:00pm and SOLD OUT! It was crazy! Perhaps my expirence was different than others.

Pirates 3 has taken the crown since Thursday. With an estimated of $17 million, it sure is a big number for a sneak peek. Now, will the movie sets a new record which was previously held by Spider-Man 3 weeks ago?

Not only in USA. Worldwide, Pirates 3 made $58 million only in its first day which is May 24. So, is this gonna be the largest debut worldwide? Beating the record that's also held by Spider-Man 3 for only 3 weeks?

Breaking the record for the widest release ever, Pirates 3 has been anticipated as another record-breaker this year. Unfortunately... not even close from the record.

Although it has a massive opening day on Thursday, the movie grossed much less than Pirates 2 on the second day. With only an estimated $43 million, it was way far from the record, not even close from its predecessor, which was more than $55 million on the same day. But as the holiday goes, who knows what will happen in Saturday and Sunday? Will it gonna increase or decrease?

Meanwhile, in the foreign box office, Pirates 3 added $43.2 million to the international gross. Still, it's also way behind Spider-Man 3, but can be considered spectacular.

Looks like Pirates 3 has lost its audiences. In its first weekend, the movie doesn't impress as much as the previous one. It only makes $112,547,000 in estimation. But still this number is yet very controversial because it has been reported that the tickets for the whole country were sold out. People were confused. Currently, Pirates is the weakest amongst the three. Although it doesn't break record, can it keep going like Shrek 2 did in 2004? Grossing more than $440m?

Meanwhile, Shrek the Third plunged drastically into $51,042,000. Compared to Shrek 2 which had $70m-mark second weekend, Shrek 3 won't out-gross the movie.

Spider-Man 3 even dove sharper. It fell to $13,700,000. With this condition, Spider-Man 3 will sure have a maximum gross around $350,000,000 domestically, way far behind the first movie,

But another highlight from this weekend is Paprika, the newest anime from Satoshi Kon. Debuted only in limited 2 screens, it made an astounding $36,000. Averaging $18,000 per screen. If the estimation is true, the movie will be on par with 2004's Howl's Moving Castle.

I'm not suprised that they arn't doing as well this week. All three movies are compting against eachother now. Spiderman 3 had the advantage of being the first movie out of the gate, and that probably helped it make as much money as it did.

Posted

^Very true, Spidey also had the advantage back in 2002 when it came out a week before Star Wars:Episode II. Of course it was the better movie at the time, but it was much easier to bring in the big bucks when they didn't have to compete with another big movie.

Pirates 3, although didn't make it to the biggest opening weekend ever, finally broke the record for Memorial Weekend. It pays back on Monday woth staggering $27 million, big enough to set its opening weekend much bigger than its 3-days. Meanwhile overseas, the movie made $245 million, just like Spidey 3. Now what we can see is that if this movie is gonna drop fast like Spidey 3 or stay long like Titanic.

So, "The Season of 3" almost end. Let's begin to talk about other summer movies. Which one do you think will be the biggest amongst Transformers, Fantastic Four 2, Harry Potter 5 and much much more? Let's the second part begin!

Posted

So, the 2nd weekend for Pirates 3 is quite disappointing compared to the second movie. It tumbled more than 60% to $43m. Compared to the last movie's $60m-above, there's no way this movie will catch up with the second one, but there's still a chance surpassing the first movie to gross more than $100m. The chance for Pirates 3 to be 'still big' is right now up to the overseas box office performance. The bad thing is in just few days Shrek 3 will start its massive overseas release. Will Pirates be able to take the pressure?

As a surprise, Knocked Up takes the second spot. So far, this movie has the best review for this summer's movie along with the Waitress. With more than $29m, it's sure that it will surpass the previous director's movie, The 40-year-old Virgin.

Shrek 3 slipped again to closely 50% into $26m, a great achievement for an animation movie. Now, the competition between Pirates 3 and Shrek 3 is on to take the second place in 'The Seasons of 3'. Start at June 6, Shrek 3 will begin the big release overseas.

Spider-Man 3 has lost most of its audience in just 4 weeks. With only $7.5m, it sure has reached its limit in box office performance. Soon in just about another 4 weeks, the performance will be about under $1m.

Next week, another blockbuster is opened. Ocean's 13 will hit more than 3,400 theaters across the country. Could this be the end of Pirates taking the crown of the weekends?

What do you guys think?

Knocked Up has been getting a lot of attention, but in the end, I doubt it will break any records compared to other movies released this summer. Waitress is an independent film, and because of that it won't get too much at the Box Office just yet. It has a much greater chance of getting attention at this year's Academy Awards than any of these other movies though.

As far as most other anticipated movies coming out this summer such as Fantastic Four, Transformers, etc., I'm sure they will do fairly well. I have no interest in them though. If I had to guess right now, I'd say Transformers will bring in more money than Fantastic Four.

While the Pirates seems to have a 'flop' in USA, it does seem better overseas. The second weekend, Pirates only offs 46% into a stunning $105.4m compared to Spider-Man's 60% drop 3 weeks ago.

The strongest hold is from Japan which the film only dropped 4% from the first weekend for a total $35.5m. In UK, the film slipped 49% only, for totaling of $57m, far faster than Spider-Man 3. Not only that, the film broke a record in India as "third biggest opening". Most of the foreign ($260m) is from Europe. The overseas tally is right now $409m, making its worldwide tally into $625.3m

Meanwhile Shrek 3 added $4m from 9 markets. Seemed it's not as big as Pirates 3 overseas, but still it holds a lot of records for animation, like biggest opening for animation at $1.2m in Singapore and $575K in Malaysia. In the next 2 weekend, Shrek 3 will compete with mighty Pirates as it opens in the key markets.

Spider-Man 3 has dramatically ended most of its markets. Only adding $11.8m, this movie won't stay longer anymore especially after Shrek 3 opens.

With Ocean's 13 coming this weekend, and Fantastic 4 next weekend, will Pirates be able to hold the crown from the movies? We'll watch!!

Pirates a flop? Wow...is that personal opinion? Because last time I checked, it made more money than they paid to make it.

^ Hey, I'm sorry. I just don't know what word to use as 'far below it predecessors' so I just use flop in quotation. I know it's a big success around the world, but compared to Dead Man's Chest domestically, it's just way far behind.

Pirates really sinks itself faster than everybody thought. Since Monday until Wednesday, the movie has been knocked down by the pregnancy comedy Knocked Up. Having the fact that it was beaten by "10% of itself", Pirates' ability to reach $300m is right now questionable.
