ParkTrips Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 http://www.fivedayweekend.org/ Basically these guys want to reverse the traditional work week, making us work 2 days and then have 5 days off The perhaps not surprising thing is that they have some support, because it started in North Carolina and they have been spreading down here recently. Thoughts? I kinda want to think its more of an advertising campaign for crappy Asheville NC
IceDragon Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I could go for something like that once a month... 3 day weekend! Partied tonight, partying tomorrow, recovering Sunday, coursework crackdown Monday... ouch
J man Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 It sounds like a good idea. But I don't think it they could pull it off without it having some sort of negative effect on the economy.
bulldogmom Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 I am sort of a freelance investigator, so I work whenever. Interview people, call people, type- whenever, with no regards to day or time. It's all the same in the end- I get my reports done and get paid the same as my unfortunate colleagues who ride a desk M-F, 9-5. So I'm all for the "free structured" work schedule- I think it can be more productive and make people happier, especially if they have families or other stuff. I don't think laziness has anything to do with it, as the work has to get done sometime.
arrowfanman Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 I kinda want to think its more of an advertising campaign for crappy Asheville NC After meandering around the site a bit, I couldn't agree with you more Joe. All they're trying to do is get you thinking about your vacation time, say, "ok, I'm going to use my vacation time...where am I going to go?". Then what do you know?--there's a bunch of activities to do in Asheville, NC listed right for you! Oooh. That sounds nice. Where will I stay? Well what do you know--the "sponsors" of the campaign are all of the Asheville area hotels! That's convenient! On a serious note, a 5 day weekend wouldn't work. For one the whole "you can get just as much done in 2 days" thing, even if it WERE true, wouldn't apply to service, manufacture, industrial jobs, etc. The only jobs it would apply too, I guarentee productivity would decrease once the novelty would wear off. Although, I do agree that American's need more vacation days. I wouldn't mind the government passing laws to give us an extra couple of weeks. I mean, HELL, if people really aren't using them, then it wouldn't hurt to let those who DO use vacation time a few more days. -Jahan "I know that's a very anti-quad boob thing to say" Makanvand
larrygator Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 I guess a two day work week makes sense if everybody worked 3 jobs
Jew Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 It wouldn't matter to me anyways. It would, however, mean more money for my employer and the industry as a whole...so I'm all for it!
ginzo Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 I kinda want to think its more of an advertising campaign for crappy Asheville NC Oh, it's definitely just a put on to promote Asheville. I've spent a lot of time in Asheville, and I don't think it's crappy at all. It's a very pretty area with awesome outdoor recreation. The downtown area is a nice assortment of unique, non-chain stores with stuff that you might actually want to buy, unlike the swarm of T-shirt and trinket shops you typically find in tourist destinations. There are many good restaurants in Asheville, including a Spanish tapas restaurant that is easily my favorite place to eat. In short, it's a great alternative to the obnoxious Gatlinburg carnival. I think crappy far better describes Pigeon Forge. Yes, there are some rather bizarre people in Asheville, especially if you frequent the book shop downtown on weekends and catch the speakers talking about aliens or energy vortices. But, I find this just to be a bit of free entertainment.
ParkTrips Posted May 6, 2007 Author Posted May 6, 2007 I personally dont think Asheville is something that one can enjoy until they are 30 years old.. or at least I wouldn't enjoy until I reached that sort of age Although, I do agree that American's need more vacation days. I wouldn't mind the government passing laws to give us an extra couple of weeks. I mean, HELL, if people really aren't using them, then it wouldn't hurt to let those who DO use vacation time a few more days. in other words, you want the government to tell businesses how to conduct themselves even more, silly liberal Jahan (please don't take this as grounds for war guys, its something Jahan and I have teased one another about in the past and its just a joke)

I mainly go to visit family, but the first time I went I was really shocked at how nice the place turned out to be. I was expecting a total redneck mountain town.

ParkTrips Posted May 6, 2007 Author Posted May 6, 2007 Honestly, yes, just because I don't think I should be voting on it nor should anyone else. To me, that's something that should stay between employee and employer. What if it was the other way? Do you think it would be acceptable to have other people vote to decrease your vacation time? Vacation time is something to look at when choosing where to work depending on how important it is to oneself. No one is forcing anybody to take a job with "inadequate" vacation because that just may be enough for someone else... if you want a bunch of vacation, go work for the government or post office or something. I've been to places without any amusement parks or mini golf courses and enjoyed myself, just not Asheville. I'd rather do Gatlinburg I guess, and yes, Pigeon Forge is pretty low-class, but Im also not turned off by it all that much.
Masked_Maverick Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Whats the good of having all this vacation time when a lot of people can't afford to go anywhere?
ginzo Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Whats the good of having all this vacation time when a lot of people can't afford to go anywhere? It gives them extra time to beg for spare change on the street.
