dandaman Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Just like the title says. I wasn't gonna post this because of how bad some of the pics came out, but then I thought, who else would actually appreciate rodents and fake credits? Photo montage activate! ...Well, never mind that, then. That's it from two hours north, but expect a Photo TR from two hours south by Monday at the latest. Till then! The last thing on our impromptu agenda was the visitor centre. Well, it would at least explain the signal fire! They’re building a raft to get off the island... Ooh, aah. Pinery is famous for two things: its Oak Savannah/Carolinian forest, and its sand dune beaches. On Monday, we decided to try our luck fishing at a different location. No such luck fish-wise, but I did get another good river shot. And looking up Main Street. This town is a popular spot for car buffs. Not a minute goes by that some old roadster doesn’t thunder down Main Street and back up again. Looking up towards Bayfield/Goderich (/north, for those of you who are still clueless). Back in Grand Bend, they had a new beach complex, so I had a look-see. Most shops in Bayfield look like this. Pet owners note: every shop here welcomes animals of any kind! They even had free Tootsie Pops at one place, for human and pet alike. But then I found a World War memorial. At first, I just went for a little stroll around the park… Went up about an hour north next, to the quaint little town of Bayfield. I'd even want to live there, provided I had insane amounts of cash. Just passing through here for now. Hey, Herbie. Bench: The Ride. (Seriously, there were benches numbered 1-20. Were these ever on rides?) $500... who wants to buy it? You can find credits anywhere if you look hard enough. They even had an S&S game! The next two pictures are self-explanatory, IMO… Some random Canadian fighter plane. (Note: The preceding was an oxymoron.) See, this ride looks perfectly safe... once you stare at the sun long enough. Double OMG for the Hidden Mickey!! OMG! Jeff Johnson credit! On Sunday, we decided to do some stuff outside the park. First, a fine shopping establishment… Chip ‘n Dale (Oddly enough, these were two different chipmunks. Sorry 'bout the bluriness.) Apparently my friend and I vented our anger by burning something profusely. One of my friends happened to be up there the same weekend, so we were going to go kayaking. Unfortunately they were already being stored for the season. At least I got a couple more river shots Some random toad I found in a field. But HE came out on his own free will. Hogging Mother Nature's limelight, I guess. I bribed this one with peanuts... Aah, that’s better. The first semi-decent rodent shot. (Happy Squirrel Awareness Month!) These next two pics are of what I thought were the most impressive fall colours thus far. Awww, it's trying to act like the Southport Cyclone! …We’re gonna need a bigger boat. The next day, we decided to go fishing on one of the road bridge dock things they have. This was probably the best shot of the whole trip. Due to my superb picture-taking skills and lack thereof, this squirrel somehow turned out to look like the big black cloud monster thingy in LOST. So, because two out of four members of our family don’t care much for tent camping, we stay in what are basically eight-sided tents, called Yurts. Two bunk beds, a table, heating/air conditioning, etc... I'm really roughing it out there. My Through the Trees shot didn’t turn out that well. (My FIRST one, at least. [Then again, most of these pics will be through the trees. {Is this enough brackets for you?}]) And there was much rejoicing. Almost there… The Ausable River… THROUGH THE BRIDGE! To start, I present to you, some random sand hill!
weeow Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Interesting/funny TR. That Ferris Wheel looked fun. How did you do this for Thanksgiving? It's not November. I like the rodent pictures a lot. My favorite one would have to be the "Awww, it's trying to act like the Southport Cyclone! " one. I was thinking that right before I read the caption.
Carnage Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 ^ Canadian thanksgiving is in October, US thanksgiving is in November. If you're a dual citzen like I am it sometimes means double turkey dinners.
dandaman Posted October 12, 2006 Author Posted October 12, 2006 Indeed I do. We had our Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday night... on paper plates, on our Yurt's picnic table. Dan "I'll be an ACEr yet with all these gravy buffets!" Smith P.S. "That Ferris wheel looked fun"? Do you wear glasses, and if so, where are they?
weeow Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I meant it would be fun to have and to ride if it was safe.
dandaman Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 ..."If." Heck, I would buy it, if a) I had the moolah, and b) it was at least remotely a fixer-upper. Anyway, thanks for reading again. I'm surprised Elissa hasn't come in yet for the rodents.
RBOrrell Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Cool trip report. I have fond memories of the area. I spent time at the Ipperwash Armed Forces Camp before the "natives" occupied it and kicked the white man out. We would drive up Hwy 21 through Bayfield and Grand Bend. There is a IHRA drap strip at Grand Bend now. The Pinery of course is THE park for the kids to go on the May 2-4 weekend back when it was not dry on that weekend. The OPP made a killing on tickets those weekends.
dandaman Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 So my dad tells me... every Victoria Day. Though it's pretty funny when the park officials have a roadblock near the park entrance stating that they're checking for "firewood". More like firewater.
dandaman Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 ...Ah, there she is. Sorry they came out blurry. I don't know how to improve my camera's settings/tune them to its surroundings. Dan "Thanks for acknowledging them though!" Smith
Airtime&Gravity Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 I've been to that park, but it was in 99, so I don't remember much. Looking at those photos brought back many memories of the place. It was really nice, but what I remember most was on the day we left it was really windy, but two elderly people went into the lake even though the waves rival those of the largest wave pools. There was also a great restruant called Best's that I ate at every day.
dandaman Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 I Googled it without any luck... and then I thought of some better words than good. You ate at "Best's". And they do have great food, so I don't blame you for going every day!
DarkStitch626 Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Great photo's also "NOT TO BE OVERLY BAD" but if thats a Canadian fighter jet wheres the hockey stick & puck launcher? Sorry Carnage!
dandaman Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 Why would we need those? Our standard-issue Timbit machine guns work just fine.
Carnage Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 ^^ We let our USA hired goons take care of the fighting. Hence why we don't have to spend all our money on an army.
trustkill22 Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I definately have been to the Pinery but we tried to stay in the Dunes but they were full so we stayed in the Pines (i think thats what it was called) That is very funn good camping and you have to go canoeing when you go.
dandaman Posted October 16, 2006 Author Posted October 16, 2006 ^^ ^ The Dunes are usually full, but Riverside is actually the better campground, IMO. (Only one with Yurts, too, but I like it 'cause it's close to canoeing, fishing, visitor centre, and above all park store ice cream.) Sorry to tell you, but there's no such campground as the Pines. Riverside, Dunes and Burley are the only three.
trustkill22 Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Ya it was a while ago I dont remember what the areas were but it sounds like it was the Burley. All I remember was being in the woods and having the worst sunburn from swimming in the better of the Great Lakes Huron.
dandaman Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 Well, you're pretty much in the woods anywhere. I'd say Burley.
