FLIPDUDE Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 First of all, for those of you who dont know - I live in Israel. Well, today is Yom Kippur. For the tightly religious people it's a day in which theyre not allowed to eat, work, drive, turn on electricity, or even brush their teeth. all they do is go to the synagogue. However, for the rest of the country, only the "don't work" and "don't drive" things caught on. so seeing how there arent any cars in the streets, and nobody goes to work, basically the only things on the road are bicycles, skateboards, skates and scooters. Even on the freeway!!! And going the wrong way, too! and all the busy places like the stock market district are practically abandoned! So today was Yom Kippur and I figured I should probably snap some photos, so here is my Yom Kippur photo TR! Get to know the city I live in! The airport security check booth. riding all the way out here was one of the stupidest htings Ive ever done. it took me hours, I got sunburned, and my ass hurts like hell from the bike seat. and they wouldnt even let me go in. By this point I was way out of town and on my way to the airport(which is the tiny bowl-shaped thing off in the distance). why? I dont know. there arent any flights on Yom Kippur. A windmill... THROUGH THE TREES!!! ...which is weird, because Israel doesn't have any windmills, but whatever. "...I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known..." "Yo yo! We be pimpin' New york subway train, graffiti'd-up cars! We seem to be a little lost... and rusty for that matter... care to help us? Pleae? hook a brother up!" Eeeeeeevil dead-end. Eeeeevil railroad intersection. Eeeeeeeevil. Usually this railroad would be inaccessible because its between the two lanes of the freeway, but guess what? NO TRAFFIC! BOO-YAH! Okay, I'll stop now. It appears that sexy lingerie models that live on billboards still ahve to work on Yom Kippur. And there's a freeway-walker! BOO-YAH! Staircase building. What's cool about this seemingly bnoring picture? I TOOK IT STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY! BOO-YAH! I'm really proud of this shot because it looks comptuer generated My bike, laying cold and alone on the freeway. I relaly would like to take credit for this picture, but it's really the architect's fault for making this building so pretty, and any additional coolness is by pure accident. BIKE! It's cool to stand in the middle of a main avenue and feel totally safe. This is the Azrieli shopping mall/office towers by the way. One of my prettiest shots. If you stand in the town square and look towards thes ebuildings, these three and a couple more appear to merge into one big messy building. A squiggly parkign lot This is why I lvoe wandering the city. I never even knew these buildings existed. A couple of beautiful skyscrpaers from what on most days would be a parking lot. A downwards slope. ALOT of fun on a bike, but a total bitch once you get to the bottom and have to climb all the way up. You can almost see the beatles crossing the street. The intersection This is the MAIN STREET right next to my house. behold! no cars!
mcjaco Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Shouldn't this be in "Random, Random, Random," as it's a Random, Random, Random TR???? Just asking....
disneyfan1313 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Hey! Cool report - it is neat to see other countries, especially in a way that we are not used to seeing in the US.
FlyingScooter Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 ^you got that right. Great TR. I'm used to seeing not-so-good pics of Israel.
chavslayer Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Great pics, I wish my city could be like that for a day.
YoshiFan Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Great pictures. I didn't realize that someone couldn't use electricity or brush your teeth on Yom Kippur even if they were very religious (I just thought it was no driving and not eating all day).
pvcoasterguy Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Wow... very cool pictures and an interesting TR. Thanks for posting it.
Ryan King Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 It pretty much looks like Fresno...yay! -Ryan
Homer Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 "Yom Kip-poor, its so made up!" - Principal Skinner, The Simpsons. Jeez, did a disaster occur or something, deserted freeways?!?
FLIPDUDE Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 Jeez, did a disaster occur or something, deserted freeways?!? So I take it you didn't read the text part of the first post.
Luxo Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I would love to have the streets almost totally deserted...I take it all of the stores are closed as well...spooky.
ECZenith Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Homer, from the first page... "However, for the rest of the country, only the "don't work" and "don't drive" things caught on. so seeing how there arent any cars in the streets, and nobody goes to work, basically the only things on the road are bicycles, skateboards, skates and scooters. krouvi Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Guys I live in Israel too and well in Tel Aviv the is clearly shown trhough these pics. The thing is Yom Kipur is the most religious day in here and although many of us are not religous the whole country is HUT DOWN. That means there is no radio , NO TV, no buses and EVERYTHING IS 100% CLOSED. This is very strange feeling as everything becomes so so so quiet and the only sound is kids outside taking advandage of free roads with blades and bikes. One more this is that is a fasting day - you should not eat or drink for 24 hours . As I am not a religious for me it was a day in front of the pc and dvd. Great PICTURES you have been really near my house.
FLIPDUDE Posted March 21, 2007 Author Posted March 21, 2007 Hmmm... hope nobody minds me bringing back to life this old topic... I was going over it after refferencing it in another topic... Id just like to point out that usually those who fast are not the same people who ride bikes and stuff.
cobra_roll06 Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 wow that would be so freaky! Would almost be like being in a parrallel universe or something. Would be totally awesome! An experience in its self. Thanks a lot for sharing!!! Wicked TR
IceDragon Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 wow, you were right, these are awesome shots!!! i'll try and get a night-life aspect of my town next time its 3AM in the morning and i have my camera (if youre willing to wait 2 weeks)
Kroger8 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 That is really neat, I love seeing how people in other countries live, it's awesome! Wow our founding fathers sure did a good job with coming up with our holidays... like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, did they know he was going to get shot or something???
the sound Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 In the same way that you had never seen all those buildings, when i was going to the Swimming the other night, i for possibly the first time realised how beautiful Melbourne really was. But unfortunately, we can't run down the highways despite the beautifulness.
FLIPDUDE Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 ^Awsome Tel Aviv isn't all pretty, it has some eyesore parts that arent that well hidden, but the whole idea is knowing where ot look, and besides, just the fact hte entire city is empty makes it look somewhat beautiful by itself
