FeelTheFORCE Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Like I asked before, has anyone else's loved one had or have this terrible disease? I went through it twice, both my uncle and my grandpap had it. They both passed away a couple years ago, but it was the worst thing anyone can ever go through. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this terrible experience.
jamesdillaman Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 My grandfather had advanced dementia, but it created the same concept: not knowing who I was when I went and saw him. Very sad and my condolences. It isn't something that was easy to deal with. -James Dillaman
Blazen_AZN Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Yeah, i have to say, losing your identity and what makes you you is a very scary thing. My grandpa has it, hes juts now not sure exactly where he lives, and i get an occasional call from him, at his house, asking when hes going home. He still remembers his family though. Thank god.
SonOfBeastSucks Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Yes...my grandmother had it for several years before her death in 1999.
FeelTheFORCE Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 What was sad about my uncle was that he was born in and spent his childhood in Puerto Rico, so when they forget everything recent and go back to their childhood it was really hard to take care of him because he was thinking he was a kid in Puerto Rico again and had no idea whatsoever who I or any of my family was. And when he was in his 20s he was a boxer so that didnt help the situation when he got violent. He got it pretty early too and had it pretty long...he was 63 when he died and probably around 53 or 54 when he first started showing signs.
thomas2 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 My grandfather had it before his death. It's really a horrible disease...
Spookbaby Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I have worked as an aid in an assisted living retirement home here in my hometown for a few years now. It is very hard to get so attached to so many residents and then watch them slowly lose their memory and eventually forget me. We have people who have lived here for years who we have to help shower and wash them because they don't remember how.
Hattuchili Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 My great grandmother has it. It is really horrible. She forgot the name from the most familie and sometimes also how we look like! When I visited her the last time, then she thought I am the milkman and not her great grandson! It is really sad to see her like that! --Sören
FlyingScooter Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 My girlfriend works as a nurse in a dementia area. She said it's one of the most demanding units a nurse can work in and i believe that. She's seen familys age quickly when a loved one gets diagnosed with dementia or ALZ. Sad.
