Vekoma Fan Boy Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Do rocket coasters have a smooth accelration on the launch or is it "Pulsy" (like Canobie Corkscrew's lift because of inconsistent speed)? Because even tough i won't get my first ride on one for a while i'm just wondering.
Rollerholden Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 You're talking about Intamin right? I've been on Top Thrill Dragster and Xcelerator. Both launches were very smooth, and you can tell before it's about to launch because the train moves back a little bit and you hear the break fins drop. Don't get nervous about the launch because it's over in a second. Have fun!
Rollerholden Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 No problem. Top thrill Dragster and Xcelerator even have lights that go down, so you know when they're going to launch. Intamin rockets are great fun!
coasterlover420 Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I've heard crazy stories about KK pulsing, but I personally have not experienced it. The ones I have been on (TTD, KK, XLR8R) were all smooth, intense launches.

The ones I have been on (TTD, KK, XLR8R) were all smooth, intense launches. Â Yea KK pulses in the back but not the front of the train. Storm Runner's launch is very smooth, however.
Rollerholden Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 What exactly is 'pulsing'? Every launch coaster I've been on had a nice smooth launch...except some reason Steel Venom at Geauga Lake didn't have a nice launch. It's hard to explain, but it started to go, and then it sped up or something. My dad and I both thought it was very uncomfortable. But Wicked Twister and V2 were fine. I know those aren't rocket coasters...I'm just saying...
DerekRx Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 The only one that has "pulsed" for me is Kingda Ka. "Pulsing" is when the train shifts (actually its the motor shifting) kinda like what would happen if you were in a manual car and tried to go from 0-100 in as fast as possible, there is a moment where you are neutral, almost thrown forward, before being thrown back in your seat before the next gear is achieved.

Vekoma Fan Boy Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 What exactly is 'pulsing'? Â Basically it is when something is inconsitstant (Lift speed launch acceleration ect.) And you are pushed foreward due to a decrease in speed or acceleration, then throw back when it returns to normal. I'm only concerned because it hwppent to me on the Canobie Corkscrew and it was very uncomfortable. Apollo210 and Canobie Fan should know what i'm talking about.
SLUSHIE Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Ive been on Xcelerator, Top Thrill Dragster, and Storm Runner and they were all really smooth and constant. Â The only launch I've experienced that was'nt smooth is SFMW's V2. The initial jerk is stron, then its kinda weak after that. It's kinda like wen you rev your engine then pop it into gear and get a large jerk then slow down before you start accelerating again.
coasterlover420 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 ^It's because there are a lot more LIM's in the station on Impulses than throughout the launch track. That's what they're there for.
mightypotato Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 The only rocket coaster I've been on is TTD, and I found the launch to be very smooth and even. From the POV and off ride videos I've seen of other rocket coasters, they all appear to have smooth launches as well.
Johnny Upsidedown Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Xcelerator sometimes has a fluctuation in speed (pulse) toward the end of its launch.
ECZenith Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I have been on all the US rocket coasters and can't say I've noticed this "pulsing". There's plenty of launched coasters I've been on that do what you explained, but no rockets. Â The launch is the funnest part of Kingda Ka, nothing to worry about.
coasterlover420 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I'd say the launch is the funnest part of any rocket coaster!
steel Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I've been on Dragster and Storm Runner. Both were very smooth. However, at 120 mph, you don't notice much.
Sean Menefee Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I've been on Xcelerator and TTD and didn't notice anything but a smooth launch up to speed. Â Btw, Xcelerator whips the pants off TTD in terms of launching intensity IMO.
Casper Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Kanonen also has a smooth and even launch but it only gets up to 45 mph. What speed it ends up at seems to vary a bit though.
thrillrideseeker Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I have rode kingda ka and i have never noticed any pulsing, and i never noticed it on any other rides either.
downunder Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I've been on Dragster, Storm Runner, Xcelerator, and Superman Escape, and they were all smooth consistent launches. Superman Escape is unusual because the straight launch track is angled upwards towards the base of the top hat - even though SE is only around 63 mph it was intense because it gets to that speed in a very short distance. Hopefully Kingda Ka will be open when I get GAdv in late August to compare.
itsme102 Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 The only rocket that I felt pulsing was Kingda Ka. Nothing painful or uncomfortable, just a different feeling.
