TR: Six Flags Elitch Gardens
Rockman89 replied to goetz20's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It's too bad you didn't enjoy the park. While I'm not too fond of the park, there is a one thing you missed out on, Tower of Doom. Intamin just doesn't go wrong on drop rides. I really hope, too, that the roughness you felt on Halfpipe was isolated because other than the uncomfortable restraints, it's a good ride that I'd hate to see go sour already. (EDIT: You rode the tower, so you didn't miss what is one of the best ride there.) As far as TR's go that was good, but what really makes a great TR are two things, good pictures and good stories. For most of the lazy members, it is only the first part. Insert those two things, and you get your trip report saved in the next forum down. On the subject of Holiday World, have fun. I can almost guarantee that you will have a great time (atleast a better time than SFEG). -

^ I love Ghostrider, too. I rode it over Spring Break and didn't even think it was bad. While it doesn't beat Phoenix or Raven, it is definetely in my top woodies. Maybe I was just never spoiled by riding it when it was brand new. -
Is anybodys home park their favorite?
Rockman89 replied to pkdcoaster's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
My home park is SFEG and so it is VERY far from that spot, but seeing as my favorite park is Holiday World, I don't ever see living near my favorite park unless it changes, which it very well might. -

While I can't say it about SLC's, I will say I do like the "floaty" B&M coasters like Silver Bullet and Talon. That's not to say I don't like the intense ones, but I love the floaty ones just as much. -

So I wasn't really following coasters back in the fall when they announced it, but why did Colossus get taken out? Parks seem to cling to their Ferris Wheels, not remove them. -
Evolution at SFGAdv / Xcalibur at SFSL
Rockman89 replied to Deadromanticx's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The time I rode it at SFStL was a couple years ago, but I don't remember it being all that great. IMO, it was sort of slow and dragged on. It was greatly overshaddowed by the Giant Frisbee at PKI, which gave a great sensation of speed that Excalibur severely lacked. -
I don't know if it's still up even, but last year's video contest had an entry about Terra Mitica.

"Must be in a Coaster Club"
Rockman89 replied to Rockman89's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
ECC (European Coaster Club) is going to be a bit more expensive than the others at $53 ($49 if you pay by the pound due to the exchange rate), and it won't get you as many club events as say ACE, but it will get you into Holiwood Nights and it does have one great magazine, First Drop. I've heard from more than just Robb that the magazine alone makes it worth joining. Check out more on them at their website: http://www.coasterclub.org/ I'm driving from Denver for this, so If you're as close as Cincinnati, you should definetely come down. Holiday World usualy isn't open after dark, so that means most of the courses of their great wooden roller coasters are in the dark at night. -
"Must be in a Coaster Club"
Rockman89 replied to Rockman89's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm just signing up for the ECC. I've always been tempted to because of First Drop, and this just tipped the scales enough. I must say, however, the invite to ERCE was tempting in an untempting sort of way. -
When since Holiday World announced the Voyage, I decided I had to take a trip out there this summer. A couple days ago, I stumbled upon a flyer for Holiwood Nights, the reincarnation of Stark Raven Mad, and that gave dates to the trip I have to take. There's one thing, however, that worries me. At registration, I will be required to show my current coaster club membership card. At a measily 145 lbs, I'm no ACEr, nor do I belong to any other formal coaster club. Now to my question: is there a way to "bypass" this? (by means of free clubs, websites, etc.) If not, I guess this will finally push me to sign up for First Drop, and in turn, ECC.

Why did CCI fail?
Rockman89 replied to pkdcoaster's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
From what I remember it closed down because of a divorce, or somthing of that nature, that the owner was going through. Soon after she was hired by S&S for their wooden coasters, and many of the designers created Gravity Group. -
I was on Manhattan Express about a week ago, and I didn't think it was near as bad as it was hyped up to be. It was in no way good, but just not that bad, not as bad as it's cousin, the late Viper, was. In fact, I got more beat up the next day on Desperado, which was still a much better ride. I guess it must all be tolerance, or maybe there are different places that the rides hurt, so certain people hurt more on some rides than others.

Have you ever gone to a park alone?
Rockman89 replied to arlen23's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I have never gone alone. I always convince someone to go with me because, for me atleast, the people are the best part of a theme park. Lines and bad coasters don't ruin your day when you're having fun with some friends. While I love the rides, people make the park experience fun. I don't think I'd have much fun going by myself, but that's just me; other's may be perfectly happy to go alone. -
I'm slow; I found it on Boing Boing today. I love how insightfully honset it is.

I don't know if this has been posted here but I came accross the coolest blog today. It labels itself as, "A forum for Pixar and Disney professionals passionate about the Disney Theme Parks to catalog past Imagineering missteps and offer up tenable practical solutions in hopes that a new wave of creative management at Imagineering can once again bring back the wonder and magic that's been missing from the parks for decades. The opinions expressed at Re-Imagineering are those of the individual contributors and do not necessarily represent the opinions of The Walt Disney Company." It's a great read. http://imagineerebirth.blogspot.com/

I am passing on the 360 for now because there's nothing pushing me to buy it. There's no killer app that is pushing me to go out and shell out $400, too much for something that only makes the games shinier (the biggest difference as of now with few games out) I'm waiting 'till they all come out, that way I have a non-speculative comparisson. On the issue of price, consider that an $800 console is a sure ticket to failure and this is something Sony and Nintendo both know. I wouldn't be surprised to see competitive pricing to the 360. As for the 360, it is estimated that Microsoft is losing over $100 on each of them. (see http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2005/tc20051122_410710.htm

Ever had a black out on a coaster?
Rockman89 replied to Dark Vampire's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I think I'm deteriorating already because I used to never black out but this year I started to. It was the worst on my trip to Florida a few weeks ago where I blacked out, for a second, on almost every ride on SheiKra, Kumba, Hulk, Deuling Dragons and got close on Montu. I hope it's not bad. -
Build your very own B&M Coaster!
Rockman89 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'd rig it up to hold me on my toilet seat. It'd be like taking a wild ride everytime I went, complete with the signature B&M roar. -
Robb tried to be a hero, but really didn't have the stuff. Here he is alongside an unknown friend (Hint: Robb's the one who wet his pants in fear.). This one was fairly quick after the Robb-ed version of the David wasn't turning out how I wanted it to. EDIT: I added a second picture. It may be a bit on the bad side. May God have mercy on my soul. Tiananmen Square Remixed No Comment.

Photo TR: The Johnson's first TPR meet in Florida!
Rockman89 replied to Erik Johnson's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Looking at that FastPass line reminds me of when I was there a couple weekends ago. Because of some nice Disney employee's cruel joke, the FastPass line was longer than the normal line. Someone decided to put the wait as 70 minutes on the sign so we got FastPasses. When we went to get in line, we waited longer in that line than the normal line which had no more than 10 people in it. (As compared to a line to the gate for the FastPass line.) -
Would you rather go to a smaller park?
Rockman89 replied to coasterdude5's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I really like the small parks, but sometimes they don't have enough to keep you there all day. Parks like Kennywood, Holiday World, and Knoebel's have that small park feel but have enough to keep you there. Other places just seem to have too little for a full day. I enjoy that small park feel, but that doesn't mean I don't like the big parks like the Disney, Busch, and Universal offerings because there's just so much to do. Disney really pulls out of the 3 for having the friendly feel of the small parks in a large park setting. -
Stand up coasters...any good?
Rockman89 replied to MARK's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Stand-up roller coasters give a slightly different sensation that sit-downs, but to me, it seems only to be that your head is further from the track. I'd prefer an intense sit-down (i.e. Kumba) over a basically any stand-up (i.e. Riddler's Revenge). As for comfort, I find them no less comforting than the bicycle seats that stand-up seats are modeled after. -
New S&S Drop Ride VIDEO!
Rockman89 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
On first glance it reminded me of a cannon; too bad it doesn't launch up. Definetely reminds me of the Wonka glass elevator, though. -
I just got back from Albequerque and I must say I prefer the back. It is a much more intense ride overall. The front slows down on the drops but the back has the speed at all the right times. Plus, in the back, you get thrown over that first drop which, in my opinion, is the best part of the ride.
