Worlds of Fun (WOF) Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to OzCatter's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I guess you're right, red does fade the fastest. It makes me wonder, why does red/orange tend to be a common color for roller coasters then? (spinning dragons, mamba, patriot, boomerang, many other rides at other parks) You can throw Yellow in there as well. It's because they are bright colors that attract people's attention, and create excitement for the coasters. Being a fan of the lower half of the rainbow myself, it just bums me out, however! -

"The view from my Cedar Point hotel room this morning..." (kbups53 @ Reddit) Well, that confirms it! It's a bit of good news/bad news for me... I love that we're getting a new coaster at CP! Still can't stand that it's another shade of Orange! (Insert Vomiting smiley here!) -

Big Dipper at GL called, and wants to know why CF would care about that? Here's what's actually going on... With no interest shown in Shockwave, they're going to retrofit one side of The Racer, and run Shockwave's stand-up trains on it! -

^Dang! Cedar Fair really doesn't like old, racing woodies! Looks like a waterpark expansion is in order for KI! As for KD and Rebel Yell, you are on high alert! (Though, RY IS the best of the bunch, so maybe it'll be spared...) -

Most Overrated coaster?
DILinator replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^I think the thing with Banshee is, that it is the best coaster of its type (arguably - it's my favorite, barely), but compared to other types of coasters, it's not a top 10 coaster or anything. I think it's in my top 20 or 25, however (because I particularly like B&M Inverts!) -

I'm 100% with you guys! I've always liked Log Flumes, because I hate getting wet in my clothes, so rides like Thunder Canyon and Snake River Falls (using the CP versions) were swimsuit only rides for me. I DID enjoy Shoot the Rapids the one time I rode it (and it didn't flip over on me, YAY!!! ), but that is more wet than I typically enjoy. I still wish rides like White Water Landing and Mill Race were at CP, but oh well... (I am glad Maverick is where WWL was, but I wouldn't mind a NEW Log Flume somewhere else - to be clear!) My question (because I honestly don't know, and I'm too lazy at the moment to look it up) is whether anybody has installed a brand new Log Flume any time in the last 5-10 years? I know that technically they still can be manufactured, but is anybody (besides a start-up park) requesting them anymore? -

Regarding a log flume, would you guys be happy with a water coaster ride like Shoot the Rapids? Or is that a non-starter with you thanks to all of that ride's problems? (Obviously, it seems rather doubtful CF would go with Intamin again, but there are other manufacturers they could use.) If they were to remove Vortex, there would be a good space there for a water coaster that utilizes the water! -
PortAventura Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to Shockwave's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm tentatively going to Barcelona, and naturally making the trip to Port Aventura, in spring 2017 for a Mediterranean cruise. It would sure be a nice bonus if FerrariLand was open by then! -
Thanks for your condolences! We always knew this was a possibility the way things are headed, so I think all parties are prepared for the inevitable... As for Fright Nights, sounds like it's a similar situation to Cedar Point, where it really draws the crowds. Oh well... That's what we get for waiting so long, but it is what it is. I'm looking forward to riding Goliath at night at least! Good point! We'll be sure to do that! How are night rides at SFGAm? I've never been there after dark before!

This is great! Thanks for all the advice, everybody! Unfortunately, one of the my friends that was going had his father go into the hospital today, and his passing may be imminent this week. So he's not going to be able to go, and we are postponing the tripas a result. At this point, if we go this year, it will likely be a Sunday in October. So, here's hoping something along those lines works out! Are Sundays during fright nights pretty busy? Thanks again for the advice!

I don't think I'd ever do a VIP tour at CP, simply because I've done everything so many times over the years, I just don't think it would be worth it to me. However, your report does make me want to do VIP tours at other parks, such as possibly Dollywood when we go next year! So thanks for the heads-up! I honestly hadn't given it any thought prior to now...

The weather forecast for Wednesday appears to be clearing up nicely! So assuming that this current prediction holds, I will get our tickets tonight! I know it was mentioned pages back, but just as a refresher... What time would you suggest we show up at the park to be among the very first on Goliath? (We're not pass holders or anything.) 10:00, or 9:30? Thanks to everybody for their help so far!

My recollection is a little fuzzy on this topic, but I believe it was the Screamer at Boblo Island. I still remember that first ride I was brave enough to ride it, and the terror/excitement of the ride. It's still one of my most visceral memories from my younger years. It was a night ride too, FWIW... There's a chance it was Corkscrew at Deer Park Funland (MiA) as well, but I do think Screamer came first. Corkscrew at Cedar Point would have been my third coaster with an inversion...

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

Informationally, I just told my co-worker (a definite non-enthusiast) about the announcement postponement, and he agreed very strongly that it was the right move. Just thought I'd throw that out there as a representation of a non-enthusiast perspective on the postponement. And he felt that way without even knowing the name of the coaster or its connotation. CP definitely nailed this one, as much as it bummed us enthusiasts out. If I had to guess as to when the new announcement date will be, I'm going with August 27th. Two weeks will have passed since the Raptor incident, and it will leave a week before the Six Flags announcements for CP to have the spotlight. Just a thought... -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I'll mention it again, in more detail... "In the Cajun legends, the creature is said to prowl the swamps around Acadiana and Greater New Orleans, and possibly the fields or forests of the regions. The rougarou most often is described as a creature with a human body and the head of a wolf or dog, similar to the werewolf legend. Often the story-telling has been used to inspire fear and obedience. One such example is stories that have been told by elders to persuade Cajun children to behave. According to another variation, the wolf-like beast will hunt down and kill Catholics who do not follow the rules of Lent. This coincides with the French Catholic loup-garou stories, according to which the method for turning into a werewolf is to break Lent seven years in a row. A common blood sucking legend says that the rougarou is under the spell for 101 days. After that time, the curse is transferred from person to person when the rougarou draws another human’s blood. During that day the creature returns to human form. Although acting sickly, the human refrains from telling others of the situation for fear of being killed." That's just an excerpt about the legend of the Rougarou, taken from Wikipedia. I'm pretty sure that most GP don't know that when they ride CP's "new" Floorless coaster. Heck, I bet there's some of you reading this who didn't know that until now. Not exactly a pleasant and positive thing for a coaster to be named after (especially for lapsed Catholics), but nobody cares. When Valravn IS announced after this delay, the same will be true, in spite of this unfortunate incident... -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
DILinator replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Most people would describe rapid shifting of one's body from side to side, causing them to slam into hard objects, or another person, to be "rough". And the other 1 person is a coaster enthusiast who happens to like rough rides! Seriously, though... There's nothing wrong with liking laterals, and yes, the definition of "rough" can vary from person to person. However, let's not act like I'm somehow misusing language (of which I am a scholar) when I state something that most non-enthusiasts would readily accept as fact. Rapid forces side to side are quite jarring on the body. However, nobody is less-than or better-than for liking or disliking them... Language changes a little bit when you're going from a casual setting to a setting like this forum where all we do is talk about rides. Distinctions like the difference between "rough" and "lateral-heavy" become much more important. I don't like "rough" rides because "rough" is a bad thing, it implies either poor maintenance or a poorly designed track. Wildcat at Hershey is rough, SLCs are rough. If you're describing the moderate amount of shaking and jackhammering the Legend does, I could understand describing it as rough. But the laterals are simply it doing exactly what it was designed to do. Using your definition, Maverick with the old restraints might be described as rough even though it's actually smooth as glass, whereas Thunderbolt at Coney Island has nothing for your body to be slammed into, yet it's practically the roughest steel coaster I've ever ridden. Lumping in everything that isn't pure positive Gs and negative Gs with "rough" just makes these discussions more vague and harder to understand. Fair enough... FWIW, I would have described parts of Maverick as "rough", prior to the new restraints, simply because anytime somebody's head is jarred unnaturally against the OSTR, that is a pretty "rough" action. That doesn't make it a "rough" coaster overall, to me at least. I see where you are coming from though. The strange thing about the Holiday World coasters to me, is that obviously, to many people The Voyage is rough. Even though I love that coaster, I can't really deny that it can be a bit rough. However, I don't care for The Legend, even though I love The Voyage. It's a different kind of roughness, and I've yet to find that ride enjoyable, any of the times I've ridden it. To each their own, however... -

Well I am... when people don't like the same rides I do it really hurts my feelings. Generally it causes me to cry or even scream myself to sleep at night. I demand a public apology and you'll be getting a call from my attorney. ... as soon as I find an attorney. As for Storm Runner, I completely agree about how underrated it is! Personally, I'd take it over either Kingda Ka or TTD! Love that ride! Clearly, we need to talk about it more here, because it seems every first-timer mentions how shocked they are nobody talked it up more! -

Count me in the camp of being "shocked", if they were to change the name. Creating some distance between the accident, and the announcement, makes sense. Changing the name would not. Care to wager a guess on how many people that ride Rougarou every day, have NO idea about that particular (dark) legend? -

I generally like Wild Mouses (especially the old Hershell and Miler ones!)... but have you been on the one at Lake Winnie? I thought the last curve was going to pull my head off or spine out! It's one of the few times I'd say they need to add trims. Heck yeah! Love em! The only lateral spots I have a problem with is the *snapping* stuff; B&M corkscrews ("flat spins") have that snap at the top. I never understood the attraction, but people seem to like those. And Maverick, I-305; all that snap action. It seems so extreme, but again, they have their audience as well. I'll have to admit, I'm looking forward to Maverick with the new soft harnesses. I have not been to Lake Winnie... Maverick has always been one of my favorites, but that snap it had coming out of the canyon over the water was brutal! With the new restraints, it's SO much better! You're going to love that change! -

It's funny, I almost posted something along these lines last night, when I saw a headline for this incident that read "Man killed after entering restricted Raptor area!"
