Great bear was the first roller coaster that I feel in love with as a child and I remember it was so imposing and intimidating roaring in the middle of the park. I wonder what happened with B&M b/c they have not been to the park since then. -

Great overview of the park. The park has a good mix of flats and coasters. I agree if the park is expanding onto the water they must be desperate for land or the next new ride must be HUGE! It is going to be hard to top White lighting, the pics you take of that ride make it feel so real an intense! Can't wait to see what the next 10 year bring! -
Dear Mom and Dad, I am having a great time at camp. I am making new friends and new memories. Today we went to Kirkmen Island and I hardly recognized the place! Their new Midway was so awesome! I took some pictures! The first ride up was "Other Side of the Moon", the parks first dark ride . It was scary and exciting at the same time. The ride is themed around someone's response to America going to the Moon and placing the flag on THEIR planet. The ride is full of surprises. We also rode this really tall roller coaster, Stallion. Even though it was tall and fast my favorite part was towards the end where it bunny hops under the station. I definitely watched my head! We stayed at the park until it got dark. Here is picture of me in front of the Shipwreck ride on the boardwalk. They have great places to take photos. A "friend" won me a foam finger at the ring toss game, it took him 3 tries but he was determined. We ended the night at the final new major addition to the Midway, The Midway Diner. They serve typical diner food, nothing spectacular but after a long day in the park a nice meal in an air conditioned building was great! Over all it was a good time. Kirkmen Island was a blast. I'll keep writing, and taking my vitamins and eating my vegetables. XOXO Love, One Happy Camper

The first drop on that ride looks insane! I love how twisty the rides looks. I have never been on an RMC creation before that off the axis air time hill looks like it is the right balance between floater and ejector airtime! I have never thought about going to Kentucky Kingdom but I think living in MD this now my closet RMC so I might think about going.

Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

Went to Kings Dominion this Sunday and it was brutal. It was high 90's all day and they kept reminding us on FunTV that it was 95 but it felt like 110 degrees outside. I even noticed in some parts of the park they were announcing over the speakers that today was a heat advisory day and they where encouraging everyone to stay hydrated and eat in one of the air conditioned restaurants or catch a show in one the air conditioned buildings. While it was brutal the lines were actually NOT that bad. We got to the park later than expected and went against everyone's advice and got on Dominator first and it was a walk on however I like the fact that B&M trains can hold larger people b/c I a tall guy and not very skinny. I thought about being a credit whore and riding Woodstock Express but it was too hot to play around with that coaster so we kept going. I did notice there was some work done to the ride. It looks like they replaced some big portions that are yet to be painted. Next up was Volcano however when we got there it was shut down for repairs but I think it is still one of the themed coasters in the Cedar Fairs chain and it always is great to look at day or night. We did Avalanche next. Nothing to write home about, but riding alone the G's are more intense. Crypt as usual was down. It did have the car attached today. I go to Kings Dominion at least twice a year and have only seen this ride operating once. I think you have a better chance spotting a unicorn than getting on this ride. Next up was the Flight of Fear, damn those seats are tight! Then we went to ride i305 and it broke down! It was interesting watching it get fixed. We stayed because it was basically a walk-on and I was intrigued to see how they handled the breakdown. Something was wrong with the second train. The technicians were working on the trains, track and the controls but eventually decided to just run one train however we got first dibs and walked on for another ride After i305 We hit up Bubba Gump Shi... I mean Outer Hanks. I had the Shrimp Basket and my friend had the fish and chips. I love the signs around the restaurant. This is one my personal favorites. Next up we did the obligatory Anaconda-Stunt Coaster doubleheader. Then we hit up the other side of the park SHOCKWAVE- I rode it, it wasn't as bad as I remember but it is time to go. First it is a loading nightmare. It takes about 5 mins to get everyone on the thing. However it runs well. It was not as bumpy as I remember, actually it was kinda smooth for the first half and a little more rough on the backend. I thought it would be a line but it was a walk-on. I did notice in the distance a pink survey marker in the woods! The space the coaster takes up I think is larger than people think and when you look at all that wooded un-used space it would be a great place to add a roller coaster. The coaster might be compact and probably would not break any records but still it can be done. Walking to Drop Zone I got to really look at the improvement in Candy Apple Grove and they are beautiful. This is a great addition the park ascetically and well shaded. Bad Apple is more intense than it looks. After the Candy Apple Grove section we went to Windseeker and then the wooden coaster trifecta (Rebel Yell, Grizzly and Hurler). All of them were walk on's however my friend got beat up pretty bad by Hurler and has the scars to prove it! He scraped his knee in two places. Overall it was a great day at Kings Dominion despite the oppressive heat. We stayed for 6 hours and hit all the major rides and most of them were straight walk-ons with the exception of the Volcano. I assume that everyone was in the newly expanded waterpark, which was not a bad idea! On the way out I saw a friend I met a few years ago that use to operate the drop tower, Fran. When I stopped to speak she sadly told me that she has a pace maker now and because of the electro-magnetic fields near the rides she has to work the front of the park. Ironically my friend and I were talking about how our first ride on the Drop Tower was with her and we both recalled how proud she was to have opened the ride and how she loved to see in seat 39. Talking to her at the end of the day and her telling us how she appreciated us remembering her and stopping past to talk really was the highlight of the day. -

Going to Kings Domion this Sunday and I am very excited about riding I-305, it is the best roller coaster that I have ever rode. I also am interested in what is going to happen with the Shockwave. Honestly, I already have the credit so I won't subject myself to the pain of a last ride but I will check for survey markers! -

I like your children's area, it is very compact and packed full of rides little kids will surely enjoy. I think there are ways to make it better and I am sure that as the park grows these little additions will make the place even more kid friendly, efficient and nice to look at. 1. I think lay out is also most too uniform and the gray queue lines are not very welcoming. 2. Smart job with the layout but if your goal is to have a place just for kids and parents that have to take them around shouldn't there be somewhere to eat and somewhere to shop? Parents love to eat and relax while their kids rides the rides. Also kids are the most impulsive shopper, take advantage of that and put some shops up so they can use by things. Again good stuff so far, as the park goes on you will get better and so will the park! -

Junior Serpent looks fun, if I were a child. I wonder what the new project is going to be, what is going on with the Zoo side of the park? -
Fred again, When the Kirkmen family decided to make a commitment to an amusement park it was a gamble, and that gamble so far has paid off! For 1969 Kirkmen Island is seeing its biggest transformation ever with its largest capital improvements ever of close to $1,000,000! First we have revamped the entrance! With that flow of people coming to the park the old entrance was not cutting it, it led to long lines of people trying to get into the park, It was inefficient and minimalist at best! For 1968 Kirkmen Island has a new entrance plaza that can handle the large summer crowds from Baltimore, DC and other surrounding areas with ease so guest can get straight to having fun at the park! Guest Love taking pictures in front of our new modern entrance! The park also added its first Midway with THREE NEW RIDES for 1968! The first is STALLION, Kirkmen Island's SECOND major roller coaster! Stallion is an "Out and Back" wooden coaster that dominates the midway, designed and built buy the well respected Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc., A leader in world class attractions! It is an out and back wooden coaster with an intense pretzel twist that is sure to leave guest disoriented. There is also the Stallion Stable Gift Shop where there are tons things to buy, this customer looks like she is interested in a hat Guest love the intimating Stallion Statue and it makes a great photo op! Stallion is the crown jewel of the new midway but we also added two other first. First a Big Wheel, which can hold over 100 people at a time! Also new this year Kaos, a ride that will spin you senseless! With all that, there looks like there is still more in the works.....

I haven't rode a ride like this yet however I was in the "aww really Busch Gardens" camp until one of my friends told that these rides actually really pack a punch. Congrats to them for adding a new proven roller coaster that will thrill guest. I hear that zero G roll is really nice. -

I am going there next week b/c I had already made plans to go however I still don't think I want ride it again, It has done enough damage to me, I'd rather marathon on Wood Stock Express! lol There are very few things that could go wrong with what ever they replace the ride with, b/c it is quite terrible. -

Kings Dominion finally pulled the trigger on Shockwave . I have way to many credits on this ride than I care to admit because Kings Dominion is in my region and I never remember this being an enjoyable ride and I always remember thinking why did I get on this thing and when will the banging stop. I am sad to see it go because the coaster count will be going down at Kings Dominion but other than that, good call on their part. Lets the specualat-o-poolza begin! 1. B&M Winged coaster- Shockwave has a small footprint but there is land near the ride to make space a larger roller coaster near where the Blue Ridge Tollway sits. 2. Upcharge attraction- Grumble, grumble... 3. A legit thrill ride like a Frisbee or a Super Swing. My bets are with the coaster to cap off the 2 years 40th anniversary celebration. -

Log Flumes don't get the respect they deserve b/c parks are not willing to dedicate the time to theming them anymore like they are themed at the Magic Kingdom and Knotts Berry Farm. Also people are into the instant gratification of the big splash rides and the visual of the huge wave, lol. Just curious I know Cedar Point built a new log flume ride in 2010, has anyone built a new one since then and when was the last time someone built on since then? -

This is going to be good. I think this is the first time that I have seen someone actually take a park that was dormant, literally on a board and figuratively in a storyline and bring it back to life. I think I will also go back and read the other 29 pages. -

There has to be more than one way to skin a cat. I guess if you want more people to go to the zoo then you have two options, 1. Build a path 2. Increase the trams capacity with A. More trains or B. double track the trains 3. Build a sky chair. Either way it is good that the park is doing so well however you need to clean those paths! -

certifiedcoastergeek I think you have made it clear you are skeptical and you don't believe that Kings Dominion will be getting a major roller coaster or any roller coaster at all. I understand where you are coming from but it makes sense if they add a coaster this year. A. It would be 6 years since their last coster B. It falls in line with the longest "40th year anniversary" celebration ever. What better to end this multi-year celebration. Year 1- They celebrated history by bringing back old rides and sprucing up the park. Year 2- Still Celebrating 40 years with a water park expansion and to end the celebration it would make sense to announce a new coaster that will be there for the next 40 years! Year 3- I am calling a Winged Coaster I think that to some degree your points are valid A. I think that Cedar Fairs was expecting more out of i305. Similar to how CF hopes Fury 325 will get Carowinds up to the 3 million mark I think they were hoping more people would want to come out for i305. B. Its a crowded market- CF believes that KD has to draw from MD and VA which has a Six Flags park and a Busch Garden park. C. They have a pretty solid collection, with little room for improvement. -

This has been a great way to build anticipation. If it is a dive coaster and it is taller than 200 ft and/or has a 200 ft drop would it be a hyper coaster? I was in the camp that that would go for the 500 foot record but they don't have the space based on what they are tore down or moved. -

The theming of this ride is Disney level work. It looks like they really paid attention to every detail in making this ride. The actual coaster looks pretty basic but the theming makes up for it big time.
