Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
blakelemay23 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I mean, parks become a lot more enjoyable when you can appreciate other aspects and pieces of engineering besides coasters, coasters, and only coasters. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That is just my personal opinion though. -
Robbie Von Roll of the Von Roll family makes Skyride cabin replicas as well as whole ride replicas. It's worth checking out. I'm considering purchasing a model cabin, because why not? You can contact him about cabins and ride models here: https://www.facebook.com/vonrollmodelropeways/ One of many full ride replica videos here: Also fun fact: The drive platform ( aka "East" at the front of the park) at Cedar Point is an exact carbon copy of the drive platform from the old Disneyland Skyway. I have been talking with Robbie Von Roll as of lately and will share some interesting facts and photos ASAP! Stay tuned!

Skyride in 1968. I believe these cabins were purchased, but later sold and replaced by the Frontier Lift cabins. -

I love how nice looking the old Frontier Lift station is, it makes me wish they would renovate the ones on the midway (even though they are fine) Also, found some map renderings of Frontier Lift. -

From this sloppy route I made from the station near Skyhawk, it appears to go where I heard. It also appears to match up with the picture Bill posted previously. Pretty sure the platform was where Iron Dragon's platform currently is. -

Also, from what I have heard Skyride uses Frontier Lift's old cabins. However, I have also heard those were scrapped and they actually purchased new ones. Can anyone confirm? Also, one of Frontier Lift's footers are currently still in "the jungle" by Iron Dragon. I have also heard Frontier Lift's other station is now where Iron Dragon's station sits. I wish there was more footage :/ Bill, look what we have done... the thread is... beautiful :'-) -

Well, Skyride has some of the highest ridership in the park. Running 26 cabins Skyride can serve up to 1,872 pph, running 37 cabins it can serve 3,040 pph (This is ofcourse assuming that all cabins have 4/4 spots filled, which is unlikely). Since we are already on this topic, and it's a rare opportunity... here are some facts for Skyride nation (lol) - Skyride was built in 1961, and is the second oldest ride in the park. (Only behind the Midway Carousel, older than Bluestreak) - Stands 92 ft and the hand woven cable is an impressive 2,860 ft long - Skyride once had two person cabins - Since it's debut, Skyride has given over 91 million rides. - A one way trip on Skyride lasts 2:40, and takes you about a quarter mile across the midway (1,430ft) Photo credits to Jantzen73 on Instagram for this photo -

Well the balance between both platforms shifts throughout the day. East (near the entrance) is very busy early in the day, while West is a walk on. Then as the day goes on both sides are equally as busy. Towards the end of the night East is a walk on and West is very busy because people are using it to get closer to the parking lot. Also, when luminosity is over West gets a very busy line. So, I'm assuming based off what you have told me Six Flags run between 38-40 cabins. However, if the ride is longer like you told me than less cabins would be loaded in a period of time. This would ofcourse make the line move slower. -

I'm honestly surprised that there's such a big difference between the Cedar Point Sky Ride numbers and the Great Adventure Skyway. Yes they have better operations by a mile, but Great Adventure has been good about running 2 cables and Cedar Point only has one (though they still have better capacity but it makes it a little closer), they also have very few wind closures compared to Cedar Point and Great Adventure opens in late March as opposed to early May. Also doesn't Skull Mountain usually hit 1 million? VR must be hurting them quite a bit. How many cabins does that Skyride have? Cedar Point's location of their skyride and attendance may have something to do with it. Afterall, it is right at the entrance. We hit a million riders on August 6th, and that was by running 26 cabins until 11:15am every morning and then going up to 37 for the rest of the day (unless the weather had something to say about it). Also, how late does that park stay open during the summer? -

Since when does Gatekeeper and Raptor have a lot of issues with wind? Windseeker has problems because its 300ft in the air. Meanwhile, Skyride is pretty self explanatory as well. However, i rarely ever saw GK or Raptor go down for wind. I saw those rides go down for wind maybe only twice in the time i was there this season. I always knew when Raptor was down because it was significantly more...ya know, quiet. -

From what I have heard (don't quote me on this part), the cable is replaced once every year. If that's true it would be much more frequent than the average Sky Ride (but maybe it is, you would know the ride better than I would). Generally parks wait about ten years before they replace them. I kind of remember watching it a few years ago on the webcam (because I'm a huge dork) it was laying down across the main midway with pieces of wood (or what looked like wood) under it for the length of the cable to keep it off the ground. I'd love to see how they splice it. Yes Bill was close! Cedar Point usually changes it out after about 7yrs. It also has the frayed cable detection system as mentioned that can detect any issues. Thanks for that information! I actually asked my friend in maintenence if the information I previously had was valid, and he said that it probably doesen't need to be replaced that often. -

From what I have heard (don't quote me on this part), the cable is replaced once every year. I do know the ride has sensors that automatically stop the ride if it detects the cable has frayed. -

Yes, the wheel at the drive end (East) stays in one position, the wheel at the tension end (West) is actually on a track. As the counterweight goes up (more weight) it pushes the wheel forward putting more slack in the cable to even the weight out. As the counterweight goes down (less weight) it pulls the wheel down the track backwards to tighten the cable. Very cool.
