Alton Towers Discussion Thread
ultradude306 replied to Ed's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've gotta say that I'm REALLY impressed with the themeing. I agree fully with the people who say that this ride is more doing what th13teen was advertised as. Actually, come to think of it, the whole concept behind the ride, & the logo, have always kinda given the creeps.... I don't know why. It just does. -
Well, this might sound stupid, but I personally find the airtime on Chance Zippers to be an amazing experience. Since there's essentially nothing holding you in, (besides the bar attached to the door), if your cage is at the proper position at the right time, you will be CATAPULTED out of your seat, and stay up in the air for at least a few seconds. On top of that, the ride offers some great floater air, but what I just described above is my favorite, and a perfect example of the "sustained ejector air" described earlier. Finally, in addition, the sipper has AMAZING positive Gs as well, making it the near perfect ride Don't get me wrong, other rides are awesome too, such as the airtime hills on most B&M megas, Intamin 2nd gen towers, and S&S Double Shots, but yeah, the Zipper takes it for me.

For me, I have to say it's a tie between Intamin second gen free falls (yes, they count), and the chance zipper. What about you guys?

MTV Developing Theme Park Drama
ultradude306 replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well, I understand that there might be some hate toward MTV, as many of their shows aren't all that great, but we can always hope that this show will be a better production.... and who knows, with it being on a TEEN network, MAYBE (although unlikely) it'll change some GP's minds about the amusement industry, & some previously closet coaster fanboys will come out... with the show being popular, & teens being more into the idea, maybe they wouldn't be ridiculed or called geeks/nerds/dorks etc. Sure... it's unlikely, as I said above, but who knows! -
Alton Towers Discussion Thread
ultradude306 replied to Ed's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well, first off, this thread's on page 306, & my username's got 306 in it, so that's Kool. Secondly, this ride looks wicked! Too bad I can't get to th uk any time soon ;( -
I understand this isn't a coaster, but I've found that Chance Zippers can actually give a lot of airtime. PS: Idk.., airtime's fun, but I also like some of the really high g elements as well. If a ride's only got 1 of the 2, (high g or, in this case, airtime), I don't like it nearly as much. For me, a ride/coaster needs to do a bit of everything to be truly good. Anyone else agree?

Lol.. That ride is how I discovered Aerosmith! Also if you hear in the hall of mountain king and instantly think Alton Towers... Or, if the first thing that comes to mind when hearing any song is how it relates to coasters in some way (the lyrics, heard it while at a park etc.) -
Weirdest Things The 'GP' Have Said
ultradude306 replied to maliboomer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
First of all, this thread is probably one of the main places I go on the web when I'm looking fora good laugh. Some of the stuff on here is just hilarious! Even before i became a member here, I lurked this thread. Now, onto my own contribution. The top things that annoy the hell outa me from the GP: -"Somebody died on this" -"This ride sucks, it has no loops" (while standing in front of Apollo' Chariot) -"Does this ride go upsidedown?" (While standing beside the ride, which has 10, clearly visable inversions) -"This is the fastest, tallest, most best ever ride in the world!" (While getting off an SLC) I have way more, but can't think of them right now. Expect me to post here again when i think of them. -

...If the first thing you think about when you hear the name of a state/province, or town is what rides they have. -
Hey guys... It's great to hear al the cool stuff about whatever else proslide's making, but I'm pretty sure we could talk about that in another thread. This one's dedicated to the Aqualoop. I'm not trying to complain or anything, but I was kinda hoping people had their own reviews/pics. That's all.
-
Wow... I didn't mean to start a god-darn flame war. Sure, both companies are good and bad in their own ways, but people don't have to freak'n argue about it. Now let's just get back on topic, or I'll ask Alvey to lock this thread.
-
Well, in regards to the boomerango, although I haven't rode the proslide version, i think the idea of being able to place the element wherever in the ride is pretty cool. Thing is. Whitewater now has their own version. I'm not sure what it's called, but it's on their website. IMO, both companies have their strengths and weeaknesses.
-
It's true that the industry is based on adaption and improvement, but ProSlide is incredibly innovative. They were the first to use a funnel slide and cloverleaf tubes. They were the original bowl slide pioneers. They turned the water coaster concept from a cool, but not super thrilling idea into an insanely crazy experience. They invented the mat racing slide (and all variations of the mat racer), family raft slide, and the freefall slide. They are the innovators of the industry for sure. Not to say that White Water West hasn't made large contributions to the industry, I just believe that they are not nearly as innovative in their concepts. I will say, the Boomerango is a great product though. Well, it's great to hear that such an amazing player in the amusement industry is just across the province from me. It's also ironic how there is a park made of entirely whitewater stuff in the same town as Proslide's HQ. PS: isn't Proslide's tornado wave a copy of whitewater's boomerango?
-
Well, it sounds like the super loop is amazing. In regards to the super loop not actually 'looping', I really don't care. The loop of the aqualoop was actually my least favourite part, and it's really nothing more than a gimic that slows down the cue due to people getting stuck. I also believe a flat curve would be a lot more intense dut to the HS. PS: As for the 'whitewater copies everyone' thing, while that may be true, a lot of the stuff proslide's made has been copies of other stuff. Not saying that they don't make the stuff they copy better, whereas whitewater just straight copies it, but really, isn't that what the whole ride industry is sometimes? Finally, as I said before, the aqua loop must've got it right somewhere, because there absolutely everywhere.
-
Well, obviously I've been miss informed about my slides. Even if pro slide is better, I've still been on some AMAZING slides by whitewater. The aqua loop still kicks some serious @$$, and obviously, they've done something right, as there's aqua loops everywhere. And if it turns out the super loop's better when I ride it, we'll, then I've got an even more kick@$& ride on my hands, which is a good thing! Btw, what makes the super loop better/worse for those who've rode it?

What Makes or Breaks a Ride For You?
ultradude306 replied to ultradude306's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Agreed... Say no to -
What factors make or break a coaster/flat/any other ride for you?... what would you have in a perfect ride? Is it how it looks, the forces/airtime, the manufacturer, the reliability, how comfy the seats/restraints are etc. etc. etc. I personally judge a ride mostly on how forceful and smooth it is, and how much airtime I get. A ride can look like crap, but be hella awesome to ride... take the Chance Zipper for example... ultra sketchy, but super awesomekick@$$ to ride. Or skyrider, a 28 year old TOGO standup @ Canada's Wonderland, which actually gives a pretty damn forceful, and smooth, ride. So, what makes or breaks a ride for you?

Least favorite coaster element.
ultradude306 replied to darklingscribe's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm fine with most 'helex of death' elements, and actually like them 'cause of their strings. 1 I don't like, however, is the helix on Skyrider @ Canada's wonderland... It's the roughest part of the ride, and the HS always seem to hurt my right leg. Other than that, however, the ride's actually really good cpnsidering it's a 28 year old TOGO standup. -
Well, thanks for the compliment . I understand that there's tons of these things all over, but mthat's actually another reason why I started this thread. These aqualooops keep coming up faster than threads can be created. This way, people can just post whatever whenever about any of the rides out there.
-
I'm shocked there isn't a thread on this already. In case you're wondering what the Aqualoop is, it is a waterslide developed by WhiteWater West of Vancouver, B.C. Here's a short review of my experience on the aqualoop at Calypso Park, which just so happens to be located in Ottawa, the city where whitewater's biggest rival, Proslide, has their HQ. As I climbed the stairway to the top of the aproximently 50ft platform, I really wasn't sure what to expect. Once I drew closer, now standing at the top of the stairs, where a group was cuing up for the ride, my heart began to beat faster, pounding in my bare chest in the hot sun. I could hear the screams of the riders, and the sinister, mechanical clicks, buzzes and hisses from the launch capsule, a strange alternative to the relatively quiet sounds of a traditional slide. As I steped inside the launch chamber, I was beginning to wonder if this was a good idea... Then, I pulled myself together, knowing a ride made in this great country of Canada, couldn't, wouldn't let me down. I stood there, looking out over the rest of Calypso Park, and leaned back against the slightly angled panel. After taking the proper position, the op closed the transparent, plexiglass door, and flicked the switch. At first, nothing, then, an omonous, robotic countdown voice through the waterproof speaker above my head. 3 2 1 Launch The trap door engaged, and suddenly, I was free falling. It was a much different sensation then I had expected. Instead of the feeling of hanging over the edge like a traditional speed slide, this was much more intense and outa control feeling, compairable with the first drop of a coaster. After the extreme, near vertical free fall, I was hammered with crushing positive Gs as I pulled out of the dive, and flew around the inclined loop, before bursting back into the daylight. Overall , was it worth it?... Hell ya! The ride was smooth, fast, forcefully, intense, and Canadian made to boot! The aqualoop is definitely the best waterslide I've ever rode, only compairable with other masterpieces by whitewater, many of which are located at the falls view water park in Niagra Fallls, just across the province. I'd even go so far as to rank the Aqualoop up there in my 10 greatest rides in general list, which includes flats and coasters! While I have not rode the proslide version, the super loop, I doubt it will be able to match the purée amazing ness of this ride, especially considering Proslide got their @$$es whooped in their own home town of Ottawa by the one... The only... The almighty... AQUALOOP.

Why Do Parks Dumb Down Their Flats?
ultradude306 replied to ultradude306's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
You're right... That'd also explain the reason why a lot of the cycles are shorter... Less wear and tear, and a shorter cycle = more people moving through as well, which is obviously important for the bigger parks, as there is way bigger crowds. -

You might be a coaster nerd if... You envy the guy I've quoted for being on such an impressively large amount of coasters and drooled over the long list for most of the day, extremely jellous, yet unable to peel your eyes away due to your obsession with coasters. -
Personally, HS really isn't that bad for me, but, enough about myself... what do you guys think? How was HS for you guys. Your coaster fandom ever get in the way? Say it here!!

Why Do Parks Dumb Down Their Flats?
ultradude306 replied to ultradude306's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Ya, I guess that makes sense, but I'm still puzzled. First, wouldn't the smaller parks want to cater to every kind of park goer too? I've seen flats targeted @ 'thrill seekers', which were WAY less intense than the coasters branded by the park to be just as intense. Second, in regards to the lawsuit thing, anybody could say the same '2walked into a light pole' excuse to try and get a quick buck with rides like kinda ka, a ride that gets EVERY GP freaking out just looking at it, but so far, I don't think anybody's sued SFGA over that ride. In addition, it's often the bigger parks who run their flats slower, and these bigger parks have the $ to pay lawyers if any legal troubles were to come up. In contrast, the smaller parks, who may not be able to afford someone to bail them out, seem to do the craziest s*** with their flats. Also, this is not just an America thing. I've seen this flat thing in Europe & the UK as well. Just look at places like Alton Towerss. Finally, in regards to them breaking down, I've personally been on EXTREMELY INTENSE FLATS THAT've been running for almost 20 years with no real mechanical issues. The ride I'm talking about was actually at a god-darn carnival, and had less downtime than some of the flats at parks I've been to. -
It's a simple question, really. Anyone who's been to the smaller parks/fairs probably has noticed the flats there doin some pretty crazy s***. I've noticed that at bigger parks, however, their flats seem to be running pretty slow, at least most of them. It doesn't make sense...a lot of these parks have killer wickedly awesome coasters that can deliver insane forces (outlaw run, Goliath SMM etc.), but their flats don't usually measure up. Even @ my home park of Canada's Wonderland, where a lot of the flats seem t outshine the smaller, average coasters, a lot of them seem to be running at maybe only half speed, like our top scan, Shockwave. Just type into YouTube, Shockwave Canada's Wonderland, then look @ another top scan & you'll see what I mean. It seems to be like this for most flats @ big parks, which to me doesn't make sense... Why can they have these crazy coasters, but not ramp up their flats? Anyone know?
