Magic Mountain not to be sold!!!
kraxleRIDAH replied to Xtreme-me's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
How's this for some proof? http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-sixflags13dec13,1,5142892.story?coll=la-headlines-business -
To give you a comparison point: Six Flags America spent $80,000 to remove their Iron Eagle flat-ride (ala Knott's Hammerhead). Now imagine what it would cost to take down Superman (not to mention the costs on parts transportation, then rebuilding).

I don't think too many residents will be pleased with the street name change. It's just too much of an inconvenience --- having to file address changes with the DMV, newspaper/periodical subscriptions, family/friend contacts need to be alerted, etc. Plus, "Santa Clarita Auto Mall Parkway" just sounds soooo tacky. Magic Mountain Parkway has a nice ring to it, plus, there is no way people heading to the park can miss their exit considering it's the name of the park that's on the road sign. Six Flags' CEO Mark Shapiro wasn't too pleased to hear about this either. I quote the L.A. Times - * Whole article here: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-sixflags13dec13,1,5142892.story?coll=la-headlines-business&ctrack=1&cset=true

I appreciate the updates! I suppose nothing much is happening at the park at this time. I had read earlier in this thread that in a meeting, the idea of covering up the lot beneath Scream was brought up. Not sure whether or not that was true, but had my fingers crossed thinking there would be signs of it occuring. Is there anything out of the ordinary or interesting worth mentioning? I guess tomorrow's live conference call with Shapiro will tell us a little bit more about what the corporation plans to do with Magic Mountain and the five other properties that are up for sale.

Mr. Freeze to turn RED!
kraxleRIDAH replied to adc9787's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Uh. What makes you think that a "Mr. Freeze" coaster is only seen by many people as a blue or black coaster? Red does not necessarily convey the meaning of "heat" all the time. I mean, what is the big deal? It's not like the coaster itself is supposed to be the actual Mr. Freeze. It's supposed to be one of his contraptions is it not? If the queue building theming remains intact, I don't see how this repaint should appear so ludicrous like a few of you seem to think. If you guys want to get extremely technical on the subject of coaster names and colors, then why has nobody complained about Magic Mountain's Viper color scheme? Since when were any Vipers red and white? More: Talon's yellow-orange-blue scheme and Raptor's green-on-green...have you seen any eagles or hawks sporting ANY those colors in their feathers? -
^ Uh. Does anybody actually give a rats ass about Charlie Sheen? Or where he may potentially live? And this is really bizarre news. Downsizing a world-famous movie studio lot for...lofts, homes, and hiking trails? In Hollywood? WHAT? Why!? That 351-acres could've been the Islands of Adventure West. UGH! [sarcasm] Rather, let's build more homes, 'cause Los Angeles isn't already dotted with homes and countless housing projects. [/sarcasm]

Though I was certain GhostRider was not going to place very high this year due to its horrible performance this year due to lack of rehab and just overall general poor aging, I'm a bit surprised it didn't even crack the top 25. Evidently there's been a lot of good new wood coastin' amok to edge it off the list. To think GhostRider used to place in the ranks of the top 10 for a few consecutive years and now it's unable to hold a spot within the top 25!

Breaking News! Free-FELL
kraxleRIDAH replied to GatorChris's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^ That would leave Cedar Point's Demon Drop as the only one, at least in the Americas. Even so, Cedar Point did put Demon Drop up for sale last year, but there were no interested parties. Hopefully these four units will eventualy be sold to other park operators and not sent to the scrapyard. -

All the things you wanted to know about Great Adventure's Stuntman's Freefall! It actually opened in 1983, not 1982. http://irmpri.com/Freefall_NJ_Datasheet%20rev%2011-06.pdf -

Don't forget that the $4 billion figure isn't just for the 150-acre amusement park (smaller than the plot Knott's Berry Farm sits on). It also goes into the three resort hotels that are planned for the project --- then an additional $4 billion for an entertainment complex and retail shopping district. But for a 150-acre park, even just $1 billion is an extremely hefty figure for investment. To give you an idea, the entire Islands of Adventure park was built for $1 billion back in the late 90's. Costs may have gone up since then, but not too significantly. Even $1.5 billion allocated for this new Garden Grove park alone would see IOA quality theming and attractions. I mean, the price tag on the 260-acre Magic Mountain will go for at most $500 million and that's only HALF of what is being invested in this new Garden Grove amusement park, which is about 100-acres smaller.

Concept ART is not always all about the accuracy ya' know. In addition, it's just a simple artist rendition. Gnome, FYI, artist renditions of rides are not meant for an accurate detailed depiction of the ride. It's there to serve as a simple visual as to what it will look like in its surroundings or in other cases, highlight the focus-point of the ride, such as in Scream!'s 2002 artist depiction.

New coaster at Knott's?
kraxleRIDAH replied to twisted_propaganda's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Bigfoot Rapids and Mystery Lodge isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The new spinning coaster is going into Camp Snoopy, taking up space formerly occupied by the Walter K Steamboat. The land has been cleared for more than a month now. There's also another topic already going on about this coaster and all the recent changes at the park. -
Ya, another vote for appreciating Jahan's great spy photos and humorous way of going about it. If anything, it's stuff we'd see at the park regardless -- what's the use in arguing the fact that photos can't lie (in the case of non-doctored ones, such as Jahan's). It was an update as much as any other of the sorts during the off-season. If I learned anything from his latest installment, it shows how the park is still in the gutter. And that's the truth.

Geauga Lake Discussion Thread
kraxleRIDAH replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That makes no sense from a financial and business standpoint. Boomerang will only be 7 years old next year and is in perfect working order, and from what I can tell, a popular ride among guests. Not only that, but a Vekoma Boomerang and Vekoma Flying Dutchman do not share the same footprint size. -
Shockwave @ SFGAm
kraxleRIDAH replied to KoasterKidz67's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
ShockWave and Great American Scream Machine are clones, with Scream Machine being just a tad bit taller and faster. Viper, though it shares the same order of inversions, has a completely different layout. The first drop is much steeper than its predecessors, and despite being much larger and faster than ShockWave and Scream Machine, Viper's footprint is not as spread out. Here's a visual comparison of all three: ShockWave (1988) The Great American Scream Machine (1989) Viper (1990) -
Geauga Lake Discussion Thread
kraxleRIDAH replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It probably would fit. But that was just a rumor being speculated on Screamscape which in reality makes no sense at all. To replace a popular family water ride and special effects attraction with one lousy Flying coaster that will be competing with Tatsu just 2 hours north? Don't think so. Plus, the park has a new spinning coaster on the way for next year. For those that are making comments about X-Flight making its way back to Great America in Santa Clara (joking or not), it's not going to happen. The reason why Stealth was removed in the first place was because there was no more land to expand for the Boomerang Bay plans, so its removal was warranted. If not, Stealth would still be at Great America. Other definite rule-outs. Paramount's Canada's Wonderland IS NOT going to get this ride. They already have Tomb Raider, though not a Vekoma Flying Dutchman, it STILL employs the same concept of the Flying coaster --- to which having X-Flight installed there would be completely redundant and pointless from a marketing standpoint. It's like putting in a B&M Inverted coaster at a park where a Vekoma SLC is already operating. They may be a little different, but they are the exact same ride concept. It's NOT going into Cedar Point for multiple reasons, many of which you can think of off the bat on your own. It's not going into Carowinds. BORG Assimilator. There's a high chance it won't be going into Michigan's Adventure due to the park's considerably very low annual attendance pulls which does not warrant a ride the size, magnitute, and marketing draw that is X-Flight. -
That really pisses me off. I'm sorry you had to be put in that position in which you're doing the right thing and have to jump hurdles to take care of the situation. That's really not fair on your behalf. The amusement park industry is about hospitality and patron services as much as it is about entertainment. To hear stories like that makes me want to hunt someone down.

ANOTHER 1st Gen Intamin Freefall to go!
kraxleRIDAH replied to adc9787's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Uh. That's only one Freefall ride for sale, not four. The "Four units available" is in reference to the vehicles used on the ride. Otherwise, there would be four listings rather than one. The Screamscape editor misinterpreted it.
