Flashback Photo TR: Six Flags over Texas 9/24/06
kraxleRIDAH replied to eskater132's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
FYI, Superman Tower of Power isn't the tallest S&S tower in the world. The 328' tall "La Venganza del Enigma" in Madrid, Spain is. The topping flagpole on Superman Tower of Power accounts for the park's advertised 325' claim, but the tower itself is only 313' tall with a 245' drop. Knott's 312' tall (325' with the flagpole too) Supreme Scream actually has a taller dynamic ride (252') than Tower of Power (245'). -
NOW if they could have a stunt like THIS, they should just hand over the person who does it an entire life-time pass to ANY Six Flags park. And more. Free everything. Free food. Free drinks. Free Flash Pass. Was the squid alive and squirming in your hands and in your mouth before you crunched into it? Or was it cooked? These 3-inch long hissing horned roaches have to be eaten live in order for you to bypass the attraction line and to get that free t-shirt. It's not like these are pan-fried and sauteed roaches. You have to pick one up out of the tank with your hands as it's squirming around and eat it while it's still alive. Over Texas is just only one of 12 Six Flags parks partcipiating in this Roach Eating promotion --- with Great America's event standing out above the other 11 parks as the Gurnee park attempts to lure a potential strong stomach on the 29th of October to break the current world record of the most hissing roaches eaten in a minute...36 roaches. If successful, the new record holder will be given four complimentary 2007 Six Flags season passes and VIP treatment for every visit. As for how many people will take the challenge...it's been done before. According to this article, Wild Waves & Enchanted Village did it last year and they actually RAN OUT of roaches. There are more brave people out there than you think. It's the size of it that scares you? Not the horns all over their body and the shrill hissing noise they make when you pick them up and contemplate crunching on them?

Knotts: Potential for Greatness
kraxleRIDAH replied to ed_orangeco_cali's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Kidding myself? The pay for both is laughable, the crews suck at both, the employees are treated like crap at both, management is filled with a bunch of people who many feel only got their jobs because of politics at both, both have horrible reputations as employers/can't meet their staffing goals, they both are filled with operators who misuse the PA systems, the clientele sucks at both... The only difference I see is costumes. Well, and KBF is better about keeping clean. But a clean park with a bunch of sh*tty employees doesn't make for an enjoyable day... I know what it's like to work at Knott's. I worked at the park during the summer of 2004. So I know how the pay sucks, I know what the employees are like, I know! However, you won't find the infectious spiel spitting energetic heads working at Silver Bullet ANYWHERE at Magic Mountain. But I tend to agree on the most part though...the work force employed at both Magic Mountain and Knott's have really mysteriously tanked for the worse over the past decade or so. Where'd the work ethics go? Is it the park's fault? Or is it just that the pool from which they hire their work force is just offering zombie-like duds? -

LOVE SFKK...great pictures, but next time leave the jokes to comedians. Your captions were so lame just by trying too hard to be funny. -

Knott's is operated better than Magic Mountain? Both parks suffer from awful operations/management. The only difference to me is that KBF ride operators still get costumes. Did you REALLY just put Knott's on the same level with Magic Mountain in terms of operations and management? Not saying Knott's is top tier, but to say Knott's ISN'T better operated than Magic Mountain is to be kidding yourself. I completely agree. I spent more time at Knott's when Windjammer was the new attraction than I do now with Silver Bullet as the new ride. The place has gone to shit, in my book. -
Knotts: Potential for Greatness

Both parks are on par for me in my book. One has the better rides, the other has the better atmosphere and service. One advantage Magic Mountain has but has never tapped into, or just "let go" is the atmosphere and service part. Knott's will always have a problem with rides because they have an undeniable problem with space. Sure, they are good at shoehorning in rides, but at the expense of removing older attractions and demolishing buildings. Now imagine if Magic Mountain was operated like Knott's and was well kept like Knott's is (neon paint or not). We wouldn't even be having this discussion. -

You might want to edit your video description. The ride was radar-clocked at 117 mph when the video was filmed. -
Park/Coaster/Ride TV commercial/ads
kraxleRIDAH replied to kraxleRIDAH's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Thanks for the response! But I was actually looking for TV/Ad Commercial clips of rides/parks. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrc111pQxjw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qdo2bK8rTE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwvZnC2AfWw But NOT on YOUTUBE or any public video upload sites. I'm looking for TV/ad commercial clips of rides/parks that are on members' hard drives sitting idly that could be shared! Or any not-well-known fan sites that host these files! -
Anybody know of any websites besides YOUTUBE and MYSPACE that have video clips of roller coaster/park/ride television commercial promotions/ads? I'm currently making a collection right now. So far, I have: HyperSonic XLC, Kingda Ka, Air, Georgia Cyclone, SFGAm's ShockWave, Magnum XL-200, Nemesis, Gemini, Tatsu, SFGAm's Z-Force, SFoT's Superman Tower of Power, Demon Drop, Poltergeist, Oblivion. I'll be posting links to them later! But if you know of any sites or forums that have links to a video file of a ride/park television commercial, or if you have any saved on your hard drive that aren't already available on video uploading sites, please share!

After years and years of being a SFMM supporter and defendant, I have come to full realization how much I actually hate the park now. Maybe buying a 2006 season pass was a bad idea. Over the past few months I got to see everything about the park --- and there's more bad than good. The park is a complete disgrace to itself and what it used to be. L.A. Times has something to say about that too: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-magic02sep02,0,232565.story?coll=la-news-comment-editorials

Flying Coasters!
kraxleRIDAH replied to Ryan King's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've only been on three Flying coasters - Stealth (when it was at Paramount's Great America), X-Flight, and Tatsu. Needless to say. Tatsu has absolutely NO competition. It is MILES ahead of those two Vekoma Flying Dutchmen coasters. -
^ Are you dumb? What makes you think Knott's would even want to buy it? Just in case you didn't know, the process of a "sale" requires two parties - a seller (that's actually in the market to sell the product) and a buyer (that's actually in the market to buy the product). There is NEITHER a seller or a buyer right now for Flashback.

S&S question
kraxleRIDAH replied to coasterdude5's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Walter Bolliger and Claude Mabillard specialize in the design of steel rides, not wood. That's where wood coaster companies come into picture. That's not the point. In this day and age where nearly every major park has some kind of looping coaster, a simple conventional coaster that goes upside-down a lot really doesn't cut it anymore. Especially with companies that sell those kind of coasters with a new twist on the concept (Floorless/stand-up trains), why would any park invest in an S&S/Arrow looper? -
It's not a matter of what YOU think, it's what is what happened as a result of Flashback's noise that made it as it is. Lifegaurds would repeatedly notify supervisors that the noise Flashback produced was a major distraction to a point where it became a safety hazard and prevented the lifegaurds from properly doing their job. The ride then went down to "seasonal" operation, only operating during times when the water park was closed - meaning Flashback would be closed for pretty much the entire summer season. The ride itself lost a lot of patrons over the years due to its low visibility, hard-to-find location as well as its reputation for rider discomfort. Eventually, while maintenance budgets remained relatively the same year after year with an increased demand for infrastructure funding, Flashback was one of the attractions chosen to be closed down in order to reallocate the money into operating the other more popular rides. So basically, the park realized a lot of money was going into operating and staffing it, while its turnstile numbers probably remained lower than most of the rides at Bugs Bunny World. End of story. End of Flashback. I also want to add...a lot of people assume the main reason why the park is keeping Flashback in the park is to keep their coaster count up. That's not entirely true, although it's associated with the reason why it's still there! To just dismantle a ride the size of Flashback requires a lot of money. To make a comparison - when Six Flags America removed their Iron Eagle flat-ride (ala Knott's Hammerhead), it costed them $80,000. That's not counting the amount that will be spent on taking the parts off-site (relocation). Now imagine how much funding would be needed to just remove Flashback. The park is struggling with their current maintenance and infrastructure budget as it is, and it makes no sense from a financial standpoint (especially Six Flags' current financial standpoint) to remove a ride like Flashback just for the sake of "doing something with it." It will only be dismantled if the space it occupies is needed for a future attraction that will fit in that particular footprint. Six Flags won't drop over $150,000 to remove a coaster and have an empty plot of land sitting there for awhile. Rather, having it closed and not removing it is a temporary solution that's most financially sound to them. Keeping it open is just as dumb financially for them because the ride draws no patrons and to keep it operating would be like burning up cash.

^ What happened to the park? Wow. To tell you would fill up a page of everything Cedar Fair has taken away from the park (not physically speaking even) over the years. I'm glad they stepped in late '97, acquired the park and kept the venue operating, but Knott's was definitely not the same park it was 10-15 years ago. Knott's appearance is now carries the generic "Cedar Fair" look. Not far off from what Cedar Point looks like. Knott's operations have also become despicable over the past 3-4 years, at times making Magic Mountain operations look not-so-bad. I too pick Magic Mountain. I agree with Robb. Years ago, I would have voted for Knott's.

^ Uh. Try reading everything all over again.

It's interesting...apparently sometime this summer, when a minimum of 600,000,000 jump at the same time, it'll drop the global warming rate by a large margin due to Earth leaving its current orbit. It certainly does sound ridiculous, but check out this site nontheless, it's very interesting! http://www.worldjumpday.org/

I get more and more impressed everytime I see a photo update of the Georgia Goliath. I won't hesitate to say that this one will offer a more fulfilling and satisfying ride than the original Goliath. Every single one of those hills promises airtime. And I don't even need to have ridden it to make that statement.

/\ UHHH. Could I buy that shirt off of you? The only thing that I have that keeps my memory of it alive is a little bitchy keychain I bought when the ride came out and some disposable camera shots of it in action. And I lost the negatives to them. And it could be that the employees gave you peculiar glances for wearing the shirt because that ride A) Is no longer at the park; B) What are the odds of someone buying a WJ logo tee and wearing it visiting the park; C) It's humorous. WJ was regarded as a pain in the ass for the park, and you showing up with it on your t-shirt is comical.
