I believe you can. I just don't know exactly how. Does anyone know? If you can move the magnets farther from the fins, you can weaken the braking force. If not the force cannot be adjusted. -

I305 is mad pimpin fresh. Good to see it up there in the top #3. Maverick is great too, good it see it having a good year. X2 as well. Looking for a underrated ride, I'd say Talon. -

I'm sure McDonald's is hiring. Will you please let this go? We have no idea what has happened to the person who posted the video, anyway. It's all in the hands of the park. Part of the proposed federal minimum wage change is that, if it goes into effect, theme park workers are only required to be paid 85% of minimum wage. A ride op would be a significantly worse job than a mcdonalds cashier. -

Skyrush's first test video looked crazy fast! Maybe not the best example. Edit: just watched the original POV video again and it still looks insane. -

For the marketing potential, I mean. GP often care about gimmicks/sound bites I think, maybe more than the real quality of some rides. -

Not too bad I'd wager. Early season sundays are great. -

I do wonder why more coasters don't do 90* drops. You'd think that would be the easiest selling point to communicate to an audience. "200 feet at a staggering 85 degrees!" doesn't seem like it would have the appeal of "200 feet straight down!". Not complaining, but seeing so many ~85* drops has me wondering. Obviously no freefall with starting horizontal momentum would naturally reach 90*, but getting there wouldn't put much force on the rider or train. It seems like there are more beyond vertical drops that vertical ones, even. -

A question: "Lateral force"
Fooz replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yes, gravity is counteracting the force of the changing vertical momentum (the colloquial 'centrifugal force') presumably at 0 or close to 0 g's. -
A question: "Lateral force"
Fooz replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
In the matter of complex shapes like incline loops and overbanks, the changing vertical momentum produces more forces to be balanced. The banking is selected so that the components in lateral directions cancel each other exactly, so that all forces the rider experiences are vertical. For outlaw run's wave turn, the force produced by the changing vertical momentum is designed to equal the force of gravity, so that both of these forces neutralize each other. The remaining force is the lateral "bow" of the hill, which produces a change in lateral momentum, creates (sideways) forces that are oriented vertically along your (sideways) body. -
A question: "Lateral force"
Fooz replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The force of gravity would still be acting on your body, producing 'lateral' G's on your body in the direction of the ground. Flat turns are banked so that the component of the force of gravity producing lateral g's in one direction are exactly counteracted by the lateral g's produced by the 'unbanked' component of the turn producing traditional laterals in the opposite direction. Turns like I305's flat turns already produce only positive g's with this method. -

Wait, I305 pulls laterals? If so, when? How is this even comfortable? http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=67638 We have a thread aboout it right now! I305 has extremely strong forces when it changes banking from one side to the other, one of the best & most exciting elements on any coaster, I think! It never gets old. -

A question: "Lateral force"
Fooz replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Moment, for engineers, is short for "moment of force", which does mean "torque", but moment in physics is the component of distance from the axis to the perpendicular force. For engineering, they are the same, so it probably wasn't worth it to put that in. I am an engineering student, btw. Lots of this is fresh in my head but if someone reading this is more knowledgable than me please correct me! -
A question: "Lateral force"
Fooz replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It's called a "moment" or "torque", and will be equal to lateral forces with a magnitude proportional to the distance from the axis of rotation. That it, it will be unevenly distributed about your body. In a heartline twist, for example, your head and feet will feel forces in opposite directions, with the strongest forces at the extremes of your body. Your body will also experience 'centrifugal' forces, a reaction to centripetal forces holding you in place (from the restraints or the rest of your body), so you will also experience (mostly vertical, compared to your body) forces outward from the axis of rotation. A lateral force from an unbanked or underbanked turn, like on thunderbolt @ kennywood will produce lateral forces evenly distributed across your body, with no vertical component. I think griffon is great, and Apollo's Chariot is mediocre. The former has much stronger airtime. Having said that, I305 blows both of them completely out of the water. Busch gardens is a great place, a better park in almost every way, but I305 is undoubtedly (IMO) the best coaster for hundreds of miles around. Drop tower deserves a mention too, excellent ride. -

This just looks so wacky I can't imagine how it will ride. As rides get more extreme/unorthodox I feel like pov's and renderings become less and less telling. The layout is neat, crazy, but like all layouts the actual speed is the deciding factor, and whether or not it's a #1 ride won't be seen until there are butts on the seat. 17 Million dollars! For a 'wooden' coaster! At a zoo! That is unbelievable. Also its too far away from me, in space and time.
