^BTW- It's called the "Dragon". (#588) Did you also get the "Bubbles the Coaster" credit at Storybook Land in (get this) Egg Harbor Township, NJ.? True credit whores have that one! ($19.95 to get in!) -

612. Maybe get to 700 by year's end, but I doubt it. -
A lot of good ones mentioned so far (Escape from Pompei, Fantasmic, ROTM-USF, even Backdraft) but I think I'll have to agree with Elissa and have to go with... Valhalla at BPB. Amazing! JJ

No. Trust me. It's an absolute oddity when they are not used. The following day they were on like normal. Usually during the first couple of weeks during the season they have them off, then they are on all the time for the rest of the summer. That's why we found it to be such an oddity, because this was in mid-June. JJ

I rode it last summer, with the trim brakes on the first drop OFF!! It's so much more powerful than I could have imagined, as I have ridden it many times before then. It's a good, smooth fun ride. Don't let other peoples opinions dictate what you do/do not ride. Asking people who are coaster fanatics have as many biased opinions as any other group. That being said, tell your son to ride it if he wants to. Others may have their own opinion, but only he has his. A better judge is when all the rides in a park have long lines (which Mantis usually does) then it's OK to ride. If it has a short, or no line (Like Mean Streak on a busy day), then that becomes a questionable ride. JJ

SFMM Entertainment offerings
OldJJman replied to wrs28330's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
1. Open rides (No lame excuses) 2. More flat rides. 3. More ride ops to run said rides at their capacity. (None of this one train crap!) 4. More personel to clean the park during operating hours. 5. More food stands. 6. Food stands that are fully staffed to handle crowds that may eat. 7. Better quality food. 8. More, and more frequent trams from the parking lot to the entrance and vice versa. As far as entertainment, bring back the weekend concert series with bands that people have actually heard of, NOT a DJ-based, lame radio promotion that gives away bumper stickers, headaches and promotes Gangsta Rap as entertainment, all from a Winebego. That would be a start, but also totally unheard of. SFMM is a pit, and will continue to be so, even under the new management. (I really wish I was wrong on that.) JJ -

Alton Towers Or Drayton Manor?
OldJJman replied to Patty's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^Coasterwise, DM only has 3 (4 if you count powered) coasters. But they do have a couple of other cool rides, such as their "Pirate" ride and the really good Intamin drop ride. However, AT is a huge park with lots of coasters (8+1 powered, which is pretty good) and lots of walking, even with the cable cars. But, they also have Hex, the gardens, and if you stay there, the incredible hotel. I would suggest staying with AT for both days to fully enjoy everything at the park. You can never get enough Nemesis! JJ -
I actually hated Pirates. (IIRC, I saw it at Sea World, SD) I thought that HL (BGW) was an improvement! Each to his own. Back to Python, not a great loss. Not really a pain to me, as I learned to ride Arrows defensively many moons ago. The only redeeming quality that I liked about it was the headchopper caused by sitting on the right side of the train as you passed the queue house. Oh well--TAER IT DOWN! JJ

Roller Coaster Riding World Record
OldJJman replied to Eagle Rider's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
IIRC Richard Rodriguez had some severe dental problems during the marathon, due to the forces. The best advice would be to choose a fairly forceless ride with no inversions, that's very smooth. Both Mummy's would be cool, but the backwards put could mess you up after awhile. I think that Apollo would be a great choice, as would Silver Star. RB, with all of the transitions, could wear you out after awile. Personally, if I could pad the seats, Jaguar or Ripsaw would be a good choice. But for comfort, I think Coaster at the Puyallup Fair or High Roller at VF would be the best choices. JJ -

Now that I've gone and reread the entire thread.... Derek, I seem to remember a little incident at CP a few years ago involving Jr. Gemini. Care to revise your story?? Or would the masses like me to elaborate??? (I am SO loving this!) JJ

You missed out on "Bubbles the Coaster" over a few measly dollars (I do think it was $17!)??? The horror! The shame! I just can't pass those things up! I'm addicted! Don't help me, I don't want it! I like this addiction!! JJ

You'd be lucky to get on if you did. I've tried 3 times to get on that coaster, and was denied every time because I was an adult!! JJ - Credit whore extraordinaire

Not a specific commercial, just promoting ABC in general. (Hey, look at us, we're ABC!) JJ -
Monsters Inc. TR and Pics
OldJJman replied to OldJJman's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Problem was, it didn't fit in at all. It was actually a ride themed to an ABC commercial. Really bad at that. Nothing "Disney" about it. JJ -
Well, being bored today I decided to drive over to DCA and check out Monsters Inc., since it's been in a soft open mode for about a week now. The new area surrounding the ride looks nice, especially with the new fountain in the middle. The area in front of "Vine & Dine" restaurants has been blocked off in a more permanent fashion. (Some have suggested that the new coaster is going there--WRONG. Hint: Chineese fortune cookies? Bye bye!)(BTW--If you like the GG bridge, soon the only place to see it will be in SF!) Granted, the new facade looks nice, but does it live up the Disney style?? The queue area is EXACTLY the same as Superstar Limo, with the obvious changes to the signs (Thank God that they left out Joan Rivers!!) The ride vehicles are the same, except now they have been themed to taxis-- same screens on the left side, simple lap bar etc... From what I could tell, the layout of the track is also exactly the same as well. It even starts out in the same stupid "tunnel" that SSL had. The premise of the ride is that you are taking a Taxi ride through Monstropolis. While in the tunnel, an emergency alert comes on the TV monitor from the CDA saying that a child was now loose in the city, and then you are immediately thrown into the movie, starting with the panic in the streets with monsters being interviewed by TV crews (Same ones you saw on the monitor) telling of the horrors of the loose child and powers it has. Then you are taken into Harry Hausens to see the trashed restaurant. Sully, Mike and Boo looking to sneak into MI headquarters. You see the two monsters who idolize Sully at a timeclock, and then are taken into the restroom (A very nicely done set). While Sully waits for boo in the stall and Mike saying "hurry", you see a GREAT vanishing Randall (angled mirrors). You then see Randall removing Boo's door and sending it into the warehouse. You then enter the warehouse of doors - which is nicely done, lots of moving doors at all kinds of angles. Probably the best part of the ride. You see an open door with the movie clip of the guy with a sock getting jumped by the CDA. Then you see Boo beating Randall, changing colors and patterns with each hit. (Really coo1) It ends with you being cleansed by a CDA crew and then No.1 saying something to you (a la a live character). It also looks like they've left the final camera shots in place (Remember "YOU'RE the star from SSL??). But, like SSL, no real photos to be purchased, nor does it look like there is a stand set up for that. I only rode once and really had no desire to ride again. To me, it's somewhat of a disappointment. Granted, it's head and shoulders above SSL, but it could have been a little slower (you race through it pretty quickly) and told a more complete story. The animatronics are simple at best (by Disney standards). Leaving the opening tunnel the same just lost a lot of credibility with me. The 2 effects using Randall are really, really good. Especially the restroom scene. It's just too bad that the rest of the ride doesn't live up to... well, what I has hoping for. I think one thing that could have made quite a difference is that in the "warehouse" the ride could have been elevated, (or the floor lowered) to give the effect of being in the middle of the space (like in the movie) as opposed to being on the floor, looking up at everything. Overall, it's a solid "C-ticket" ride, geared towards children (probably <10 years old) and families. In that aspect, it is a good addition to the park, as it does need more "family" rides with children in mind. Sorry there aren't more pics, but I didn't want to use my flash in the ride (ruining it for others riding) other wise I'd post more. Sad thing is (with my typing speed) it took longer to write this report than to drive down there, park @ DTD, ride MI, Eat a soup bowl, walk back to my car and drive home. Oh well. JJ No.1 at the end of the ride. The actual Taxis Inside posters MTA Screen (Where Joan Rivers was) Inside queue Inside queue Entrance Fountain
