Canobie Lake Park Discussion Thread

It will give me more reasons to ride the Boston Tea Party for one. I like that ride, but hate getting soaked for that one drop. If this rapids ride gets me drenched, which if it's anything like the one at Compounce it will, I've got nothing else to lose at that point. -
Cranmore Mountain Adventure Park My credit run in the Northeast included quite a few mountain coasters. The one at Cranmore Mountain marked the first one I came across. As far as mountain coasters go, Cranmore's is easily the weakest I've been on. Not only is it the shortest, but it has the worst setting of them all. Cranmore's doesn't really have anything concealing the layout like the others. It's more-or-less just a large empty hill. The ride is still enjoyable- decently fast with some good turns- but there are better ones out there, especially the one down the road at Attitash which happens to be my favorite (more on that later). 7 out of 10 Cranmore also had a few other rides and attractions. I only came for the mountain coaster, but I saw that they had a short zipline, a weird Screamin' Swing knockoff, and a skylift up the mountain. Onto the photos! The Mountain Coaster was the real reason I came. Unfortunately it was the weakest one I've come across. And here's that crazy knockoff screamin' swing. The ride slowly lifts riders up and then releases them for a few swings. The obligatory chairlift at a mountain resort.

I'm shocked not to see it posted here, but Canobie submitted plans with the Town of Salem two weeks ago to build a river rapids ride in 2017 called the New Hampshire Explorer! The ride will be located next to Untamed and will fill out that section of the park nicely. Based on the plans submitted, it looks like the ride will have some pretty good theming with it as well. Plans Submitted to the Town I'm really excited to see a new river rapids ride. I was almost certain the park's next addition would be a water ride, but I was dead wrong what kind. I was expecting some water slides by the park's Castaway Island water play area. -

I honestly had a good time once I got in the park. Maybe it was because the park didn't feel crazy crowded due to the massive bottleneck to get in. -

Just curious, did the line look something like this? That took me an hour and a half to get through in my one and only visit to the park This can't possibly be the line... And the line ends in a free-for-all for the 3 metal detectors that were open. Maybe these people haven't bought tickets yet... Oh they all have tickets... WTF and why is that switchback so long? There's really more coming (and not the Cedar Fair RMC tease) Oh Canada... Enough with the switchbacks! I know I did this in Roller Coaster Tycoon, but this is cruel and unusual punishment. -
I knew it was too good to be true. Other than the usual Six Flags things (ride breakdowns, head scratching policies, dorm-like food), I had a good day. The park did a good job with their Halloween theming and wasn't overly crowded. My highlight of the day though was not having assigned seating on Wicked Cyclone. I haven't seen that before and it finally allowed me to get both front and back seat rides. The front was fantastic, but the back is definitely the best seat on this coaster.

Thanks! I really like mountain coasters. Usually they have great settings and do a great job maintaining their speed the whole way down. I actually just rode the one at Berkshire Mountain a few hours ago and it was one of the best ones I've been on. My favorite still is the Attitash one. Thanks! The first time I rode Wooden Warrior I was expecting a kids ride, not an intense little ride jam packed with air. I figured Roar-O-Saurus would be the same and I was right. I'd also throw Phoenix and two classic woodies in New York ahead of it as well (Comet & Cyclone).

Unfortunately I missed Black Widow due to time constraints but the ride looked intense. Having been on Pitt Fall, I know the ride's placement probably has you swinging over the ravine and probably feels much higher than it is. My favorite frisbees actually are the Technical Park versions. They may be smaller than those large Huss versions, but they provide crazy ejector air. Yes you do. I promise its better than La Ronde. Yes. Yes you do, Bill. And you also need to say when you are coming.....it is my home park, after all! Might I suggest Phantom Fright Nights? While they're no Universal or anything like that, for a more modest/mid-sized park, I feel their Halloween event is quite excellent!! Nice report and pictures! Looks like Robb and Elissa delivered another of their typical stellar and super FUN trips!! Do they have one large haunt walkthrough like their sister park (Lake Compounce) or do they have several smaller ones like other parks?

Story Land Because of my love for Quassy's Wooden Warrior, I had to check out Story Land's version, Roar-o-Saurus. I don't know why it took me this long to get back to the park (actually I do; it's probably because I have a beard and no kids) but I really enjoyed my visit. Story Land is one of the best themed parks around. Even their standard rides like the tilt-a-whirl, tubs-of-fun, and flying scooters are themed. The park is also littered with playgrounds and play areas for the young kids. Roar-o-Saurus- For anyone who has been on Wooden Warrior, Roar-o-Saurus is a more aggressive version. The ride has more hills, all of which have airtime. I think I counted 12-13 moments of air time. The ride is pretty smooth; some of the turns have shuffling but that's a relatively minor complaint. Don't be fooled by the ride's size because this is definitely one of the top 10 wooden coasters I've been on out of the 70 or so I've been on. 9 out of 10 Polar Coaster- The park's oldest coaster is still a unique little coaster. Situated on the park's hill, the Polar Coaster has a mine train esque layout with small dips and a solid final helix. For a junior coaster, it's a really fun ride. 6 out of 10 The park also has a great collection of water rides. The flume (Bamboo Chutes) has the best themed ride vehicles anywhere in my opinion and a solid layout. The river rapids ride (Dr. Geyser's) is an interesting version. There's no rapids whatsoever, but instead the ride has several sprayers and geysers to get you wet. Then there's Splash Battle if you want to leave drenched from head to toe. Onto the photos! Story Land is one of the nicest themed parks around. The park has plenty of little play areas for the kids. Hope there's some air freshener in there. I always wanted to milk a cow! If this is one of your dreams too, get down to Story Land. Welcome to Story Land. For future reference, going here alone with a beard probably looked kind of sketchy. No wolf, so everyone is safe. Omg is that really a Tebow jersey... Beware of animals. The horses rock back and forth. It's a good way to exercise. The park also has the best carousel without rings. Or regular cars if you don't want to feel like a hick. The Bamboo Chutes is a cute little flume. Yes that is a dragon. And he may blow all of the rides. With water that is. These are the best ride vehicles ever. Crazy Barn is an interesting flat. If spinning is your thing, Cuckoo Clockenspiel has you covered. Just look at the detail on this tubs of fun ride. If a dragon blowing on you doesn't get you wet enough, there's Dr. Geyser's. This is how I learned to make it rain. They also have these farm tractors. The park even themed their flying scooters. Unfortunately they're pretty tame and unsnappable. This was one of my first ever coasters way back when. The Polar Coaster feels like a mini mine train coaster. The park uses its natural terrain very well. Story Land may be the park with the best trains/ride vehicles anywhere. Yes better than Disney. This is the park's only real thrill ride. Half the kids I saw came off crying. The other half were excited and ran back in line. The real reason for my visit was the park's Gravity Group woodie, Roar-o-Saurus. Roar-o-Saurus was fantastic. It's an intense little coaster with way more airtime than woodies 2-4 times its size. Lift hill porn. I love the trains! The park's attention to detail is impeccable. Oh yeah they also have the safari ride which is an awesome rip off of the Jungle Cruise. It even has a little white girl! Then there's this evil thing if you really really want to get wet. If you're not dizzy enough there's the Turtle Twirl.

I preferred Smoky Mountain to the Goat Coaster, but both were really good and I'd recommend trying both. We rode both during the day, but they do offer night rides which would be cool. The Goat Coaster employees said their coaster is in complete darkness at night. I didn't get a chance to try the Gatlinburg ones, but those in my group who did said the Pigeon Forge ones were better. -

It was absolutely pouring for a half hour on Saturday and everything (open for the haunt) was running except the Disko and the Ferris wheel. Like Coasterbill said, the Haunted Graveyard walk through is outstanding and very well done. Much better than any other haunt I've ever gone through. Then the rides on Boulder Dash at night alone are worth going since the park usually closes before the sun goes down during the summer months. -

I was at the park for the Haunted Graveyard last night for the fourth straight year. Because it's hard to get night rides on boulder dash in the summer, this has become a mandatory event for me. Some thoughts on my visit. Boulder Dash is still amazing and one of the best coasters anywhere. The ride maintains its speed better than most coasters all the way to the end and delivers crazy airtime. I''ve seen a lot of posts complaining about the triple up. Yes it was bumpy, but it wasn't so brutal I didn't want to ride again. If they fix it in the offseason, the ride won't have any flaws. Lines were about 20-30 minutes with one train ops. Phobia really changes the park's skyline and is the complimentary coaster the park has needed. I had been on Discovery Kingdom's Superman, so I knew what to expect. The launches were fun (though breaking them up takes away the sudden force that most launch coasters provide) but the highlight is the main ascent and descent which gives amazing air. Phobia was a 1-2 train wait since the crew really hauled. Wildcat was closed again. I think I've only seen it open at the Graveyard once. The Graveyard was well done as usual. Very well themed and immersive with well over 100 live scare actors/actresses. I love how it's one long haunt (45 min) instead of having to wait for several small haunts. One thing the park needs to improve is its communication. The website said the park was open until 11 as did the front gate when we entered around 5:30. After getting out of the Graveyard around 9:30, we did the Flyers and Thunder n Lightning. At 9:55 we were in line for Phobia when the employees were celebrating 5 minutes until closing. I asked and they said they made a decision to close the park an hour early due to low crowds. After Phobia we hightailed it over to Boulder Dash to get a final ride. When leaving I stopped at Guest Relations and found out the decision to close the park an hour early happened around 6:30-7. I understand the park closed early due to low crowds, but I just shared that I wished they notified people inside the park sooner than 9:55. Phobia really changes the park's skyline. Boulder Dash is still the king of the park and one of the best coasters in the world. PS- The triple up is bad, but it's not enough to stop me from riding. Down Time is still one of the best themed drop towers. I love the clock effects at the top. I got caught with my hand in the cookie jar. With the overcast/rainy weather and the fog, the park had a really eerie atmosphere. The flyers were faster than I remember. They don't go as high as other parks, but at least they move now. Great compliment to Boulder Dash. -

I guess I've been lucky since I've had that ride operational in all of my visits to the park. I too can confirm that Leviathan was running during the day on Saturday. That was my primary visit for going back since it was new so I would have been really disappointed if it were down. -
I agree the Z-Force shown in the video looks pretty lackluster. However, I rode the Z-Force tower that used to be at WWE Niagara. The ride looked incredibly slow off-ride, but the ride had stronger air than most S&S towers at the top. For anyone who has been on La Ronde's Orbite tower, the ride seems to do the same thing- stall for a sec and then shoot you down which creates a huge pop of ejector air.

I ran across this place on RCDB a few weeks ago and didn't realize it existed. I'll definitely be stopping in for the credit the next time I'm down in New Jersey. -

In my opinion, both layouts look fantastic. If you had told me I'd be splitting hairs over an Intamin and Vekoma layout a few years ago, I wouldn't have believed you. If both rides cost the same, I'd pick the Intamin since they've proven they can design a world class hyper coaster. If Vekoma costs less, this might be their opportunity. -
Not really. If you're into credit whoring they have a kids coaster and I think adults can ride it but I don't know for sure since we're not about that life. They also have a Paratrooper which we rode because I love them, but there's nothing about it that makes it noteworthy. It's not like it's the Fun Spot America paratrooper of death that everyone needs to go out of their way to experience. I stopped in for a little bit earlier today. Crossbow had a nice layout and I liked the trains, but it was rattling the whole ride. The Dragon Coaster does allow adults (I may or may not know from experience). Outside of that, the park has some classic flats and kiddie rides. The antique cars looked particularly nice with safari statues next to the layout. As a thrill seeker, the park wouldn't have warranted a return trip from me. However, the park had an excellent collection of rides for the younger crowd.

Canobie Lake Park I had all of the roller coaster credits at Canobie, but I was overdue for my annual visit to the park. I love Canobie (if my user name doesn't give that away) and have been going there my whole life. The park is very well run and has the perfect classic park atmosphere. One of the primary reasons for my visit was to check out Canobie's new pinball parlor. The park renovated the old arcade near Untamed and moved all of the park's pinball machines there. The park had a great mix of classic machines with modern machines and I'll be sure to stop in for at least a game or two in all of my visits. Yankee Cannonball- This was my first wooden coaster so it holds a special place in my heart. The park takes care of the ride well as it is one of the smoothest wooden coasters anywhere despite being 80 years old. The first and third drops still gives really good air in the back; however, the GCI retracking smoothed out the ride and sapped it of the air-time that used to be present on almost every hill. The ride is still fun and a classic, but it's not as good as it used to be. 7 out of 10 Untamed- My first Eurofighter is an intense little coaster. I love the bear-themed cars and lodge-themed station. The first drop gives really strong air and is the most intense moment in the park. Unfortunately the rest of the ride needs to be ridden defensively as the transitions can be pretty rough. I'd love to see this get lapbar only trains, but until then I'll continue to ride it defensively to enjoy the loop, inline twist, and first drop. 7 out of 10 Canobie Corkscrew- Every year I visit, I keep thinking it will be the ride's last year. However, the ride just keeps on kicking. The first drop still gives good air in the back and the corkscrews aren't too uncomfortable since I've ridden it enough that I can brace myself appropriately. 6 out of 10 It was 60 degrees, so I wasn't feeling the Boston Tea Party. Great lighting package on the ferris wheel. I did get the fried clams though. They were decent, but a little expensive even by park standards. Classic log flume. I'm at Roller Coaster Tycoon the park. Star Blaster is one of the best double shot towers. Actually not really. Roller Coaster Tycoon the park would have the vehicle shooting off the tower. I haven't found a rotor or gravitron that goes nearly as fast as Canobie's. Inside here is the craziest rotor around. And those cars. Untamed is wild. I just love the station. This is the only photo I got of the Cannonball. It's a really difficult ride to photograph from inside the park since it runs along the parking lot. Ghostbusters Lord of the Rings And lastly the pinball parlor! Pirates And the famous Roller Coaster Tycoon Spider-Man (wish it wasn't themed to 3 though) Star Trek Star Wars Classics like Super Mario Bros.
