Conneaut Lake Park may open in August By Tim Hahn tim.hahn@timesnews.com CONNEAUT LAKE -- The summer season might not be a complete loss for the people who love and depend on Conneaut Lake Park. The 15-member board of directors charged with overseeing the 115-year-old resort and amusement park on the west side of Conneaut Lake will try to open parts of the facility in early August, park spokesman Ralph Lee said Tuesday. Lee, a member of the park board, said the body has accepted a gift of nearly $60,000 from Conneaut Lake resident Greg Sutterlin and plans to use the money to get the Beach Club and possibly the Hotel Conneaut open by the first week of August. Sutterlin, who unsuccessfully tried to buy a parcel of land in the park earlier this year, raised the money through donations to keep the park running. Opening a couple of park attractions would allow the park to start generating some much-needed revenue while showing the public that the board is committed to reopening the entire facility, Lee said. "It's really a good-faith effort to the community to at least get parts of the park open this year," he said. "But the main focus is to get things running for next year." Board member John Swick, who served as its president until stepping aside on Monday, said last week that the park continues to receive numerous calls from people who want to see the facility reopen. Conneaut Lake Park, which sits in public trust under Crawford County court supervision, was ordered closed by then-custodian H. LeRoy Stearns in May after overseers were unable to raise enough money to open the place for the season. It was the second time in 12 years that the park failed to open, and the move had many concerned about the effect the closing would have on local businesses and county tourism. Lee said Tuesday that the park board plans to do everything it can to reopen the place and put it on better footing for the future. He added, however, that the board, which had its third meeting on Monday, has a lot of hurdles to clear just to get the Beach Club and hotel open. Those include paying some back bills, getting equipment together and finding a manager, Lee said. He said it is hard to predict how the board will fare, given the park's roughly $2.8 million in unpaid debts and the many issues that need to be addressed. "But we're going to do our best," he said. Members of the public are expected to have some say in what the future could hold for the park, as the board plans to hold a town hall meeting to solicit community opinion, Lee said. The meeting will likely be held in late August, he said. "We want to keep this an open forum, an open board, so the community knows what's going on," he said. I love to golf. My drives are fairly good, usually about 250 275 yards. My iron shots suck, big time. Mediocre at putting.

Looking back, It was a scenario similar to this that made WildWood Park (columbia station, Ohio) close its doors. It was like a 3 or 4 year drown in a large, 12" deep kid area pool. Light crowd, about 40 kids in the water, guards spced out about 15feet from each other, totaling about 12 in that area alone. the kid was found face down in about 6 inches of water. Sad. Whats really sad, they cleared the area, made an announcement over the PA for childs parents to go to guest relations. Kid had a name tag on that listed an alergy to pencilin. It took the parents about two hours to show up. there was speculation that they weren't even there when the accident happen. Well, the parents sued, won big money and Wildwood shutdown...

I think the pay-out will be enourmous, either by jury or out of court settlement. Yeah, accidents happen, even on well inspected rides. All SFKK can prove is that they inspected the ride daily and saw no visible signs of wear and tear. And that's when the girls attorney will say: Well, good thing they're inspected. But how well can they be inspected when a girls feet can become severed under normal operating conditions??? If I were this kids dad, I'd get the best lawyer there is.

That does make sense with ride-side of GL is concerned. -
/\/\ I couldn't agree more. Very sad. Where were the parents????!!!!! Well said about nowadays, Wes. When my sisters and I were growing up, my mom saw to it we could swim almost before we could we walk. I have no recall of learning how, but her and my dad took pics. Mom's thinking, as she told us later as grown=ups: you spent the first nine months of your life in water. why get the chance to be afraid of it or forget. again, where were the parents? This could've been PARENTALLY AVOIDED.

Cedar Fair seeks buyout.
FlyingScooter replied to FlyingScooter's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I didn't know Pioneer was closing, but it doesn't surprise me. WildWood Water Park (columbia station ohio: Closed about 10 years ago. Dover Lake: Closed Two years ago. With Pioneer closing, which is the last water park in this part of Ohio, GL should be doing great, but isn't. I would say waterparks just don't do well around here. Would anyone like to speculate as to why waterparks don't do well here, but 100 miles west they do just fine? -

^But the last year SFlags owned WOA/GL, they intro'd the new whale and the place was always packed. We had passes and went there over 15 times that year. Even Weekdays the place was packed. They'd have to turn people away for the shows, which always hit capacity crowds. -

I don't know about GL ever getting 2.5 million. I do remember 6Flags consistently hitting 1.7 million visitors. The whole 6Flags to CF transition went like this: 6F having Gl with Animals (SW) vs. CF with no animals: 1.7 million vs. 700,000 tops. You lose a million people a year. That's real bad. Why did they lose it? Hmmmm, no animals, no shows no entertainment whatsoever. And CF gave us another waterpark and what else? CORNHOLE???? yeah, right. -

Without mike Rowe, the series is doomed. History Channels Ice Road Truckers doesn't have the punch of Deadilest Catch. But i wish them the best. I'll still watch it though. -

What coaster would you rebuild?
FlyingScooter replied to Skramp's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'd go back to 1969 for Euclid Beach Parks last season to hit the coasters and scooters one last time. I was seven when it closed, and while I still remember it well, I think it'd be nice to compare those to todays standards.
