Drachen Fire: Why such a failure?
stricklandCC replied to stricklandCC's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
niiicolaaah^definately a good post to read up on. I never got to ride DF, (unfortunately) however, gone or not, the problems perplex me...Orient Express(WOF) was my first looping coaster, so ulitimately i will miss it(although i don't really remember it) I understood that the ride(Drachen Fire) was rough, and granted it is an Arrow, but after watching a POV over and over again, it seems as though only the EXIT of the first corkscrew(fourth element) was the "snapper", With a little research i found that the design was passed off from B&M to Arrow(most prolly knew that i guess) so a clash in design makes A LITTLE sense, but still, no reason that it couldn't have out-lived Loch-Ness at least... -
What is your favorite Roller Coaster?

CoryPa77 I apologize for doubting you, although i haven't bed to KSC in close to 5 years, i never looked at it as a "high dollar" attraction. However, as a huge aeronautics\space program fan i thouroughly enjoyed each visit to the KSC. Mission space took almost 10 yers of development as did Indiana Jones at DLC, each of which specific technology needed to be invented to allow such atractions. I automatically assumed much of Mission Space's budget was allocated for developmental\inventive purposes and the ride itself was only a small portion of the $100 million total costs. That is why i doubted the KSC attraction could cost so much. sorry. Dan "now i feel like a dumb-a$$" Strickland

CoryPa77 wrote "...$55 to $60 million" That, I highly doubt. Having lived in Orlando for quite some time, KSC simply does not have that kind of budget. Think about it, even one of the most pricey thrill rides (Maverick, CP) barely cost 1\3 of that. Even "mission:space", WDW cost less than $100 million, and that ride was not only invented, by but developed by WDW over the span of 10 years!!! Dan"not sure where your numbers came from" Strickland

Cool Kingda Ka Motor Pics!
stricklandCC replied to pgathriller's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
AllisonY2K wrote "looks almost as big as the room Hulk has for it's launched lift hill motors" Actually, there is no "motor room" for HULK. Each [small] motor is directly connected to the actual wheel(s)\(tires) that propell HULK up its launched lift. Each wheel is individually powered my its dedicated motor, located JUST underneath of the actual tire. Dan "U.S.O. should have chosen lockheed-martin to develop the launch system for hulk" Strickland -
Ceder Fair may be taking care of some of the "recentley aquired valued parks" however, Great America (formally PGA) hasn't gotten crap for new. All we know is "it's sure to make waves" great, since when is a wavepool a thrill attraction?? I live 45 min. from the beach! How much better can it get. I forsee them (ceder Fair) pumping a considerable amount of effort into their newly aquired, high profile parks, and let the rest [of their parks] at "status quo". It kinda reminds me of the "Six Flags Era", lets purchase hella parks, and allow ourselfs to go bankrupt 10 years later! I'll tell ya', I can't wait... Dan "so much for my local park" Strickland

Definatley looking forward to this event, i have RSVP'd for the after party with Robb and Elissa, and plan on attending the ERT as well, however, in trying to RSVP for the ERT at rideworld.com, the e-mail response would not recognize my "HTTP SERVER" how else can I go about securing spots for 4 people for the ERT? Simply put, I'm all about opinions, however, it doesent seem that many costers are good enough for us. Keep in mind though, even though any given coaster may be inferior in some aspects, it also has its strentghs, thats all i'm saying. to be critical is fine, i agree into picking apart a coaster until we are left only with the cons And pros. Did i start this thread to be controversal? absolutely, after all, doesent'controversy lead to the better conversations? I just think that instead of hating, or bashing a coaster because of a single attribute, lets also realize that it may have something to offer that others don't. Honestly if you think a coaster truley sucks, state it, but if its only a single characteristic that we may not like, lets not hate the ENTIRE coaster for it. IE: Rattler, SFFT, rough? sure, does the helix suck? yup!, has it been seriouly butcherd? indeed but is it a descent ride, if not a great one?? I think so...

For starters, lets all realize that we are all COASTER ENTHUSIASTS. Why do many feel the need to bash coasers for their ride quality. Whether they be rough, or smooth, all of them receive critic. Let's assume that it is a ROLLER COASTER, they all ride differently, and such we love them. Everything I see or read, is either..."its too rough" or, "its too smooth", or, "its too forcefull", or, Its not "forcefull enough". lets just agree to love these rides regardeless. you're not on a "MAG-LEV" train, and such these rides succomb to physics and gravity. Even though a ride may be rough, or too smooth, can't we recognize them all for what they are, and not what our personal desires dictate?? Don't these contributing factors add to the over-all ride expirience? Dan "lets not be so critical of the things[roller coasters] we love" Stricklnad

^thank you, so where more supprts are needed anyways(hearline rolls\heavily banked turns), it would be reduntant to use additional rails for support...got it! -
my maintinence post was geared more to the down-time of Gotiath. X, however, well its a prototype, perhaps an under-engineered one at that. I know they had many problems regarding the arms on the trains, and at one point I think installed a sort of suspension system. What has kept it down for the last two years i have no clue though, indeed a long time for a maintenence\refurb... Dan"I just wanna ride the damn thing" the Man

^---fair enough...that makes sense, I should have noticed her lack of presence!!, but regardless, is my reasoning un-sound? -
the post on the last page (regarding "walk-ons'") indeed is a truely intelligent statement. In all honesty, realize that anything needs maintinence. the oil change on your car, the roof repair on your home, even exam\dead week during final exams. it is not un-expected that a coaster may need a matter or weeks to re-new itself...as for the X-Rays, i'm not sure, I know that they can count the numer of threads exposed in each bolt with a set of binoculars to determine what may be loose though. looks fantastic to me!, just a question, if Intimin's track design is based upon that of g'forces, why do some "high-G" spots have only the "two-rail" design(such as the horse-shoe\highly banked turn) here. On many of his coasters, the heartline roll is only constructed of the two rail design(heavy load while inverted), however some of the lower-G spots(maverick's top of 95 degree(negative g'forces)) are that of three or four rails... I understand the part of structural rigidity, but sometimes, his methods\desings don't conform...HMMM... Dan "the slightly confused" Strickland -
I don't get the fuss, almost half of the posters on this thread have already been on Sheikra,. why not expireince something new, whether it be a new credit, or a disgrace to the original ride, its more than you've been on so far, why not just enjoy it!. If bad press and feedback seem to prevail, then i'm sure, BGT will have no problem, let alone the recources to "fix"\"change" it... Dan "always in for something new" the Man

in all honesty, a Schwarzkopf coaster is a great coaster, need it be here or the UK, however, i'm not an analytical prick, but at 2600 feet, how could you possibly release that one of the longest coasters in the world. i don't knock the press realease, or the money behind it, i just don't like false claims,. a great coaster it is, ONE of the longest in the world IT IS NOT...indeed a great re-birth to a "must be scrapped" coaster

again, not to be discouraging, however, i think you were on a more successful path a few months ago. You were planning on building a SMALL portion of track to ensure that your track building methods will work. IMO, you're tackling too much at once, you've given yourself a distant deadline, so use it. make sure your track and train will work before you dive in head first. Also, your priorities are completely mis-placed, i really wouldn't worry about logos and names until you know the thing will work!. Another issue i see is scale. EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE TO SCALE!!. you were talking about a chain 1/2 inch wide when your tack may only be a couple inches at most. have you thought about what the train will be constructed of, what you will use for wheels(including guide and up-stop) and just scanning some of your drawings, your "rolls" are too compact, lengthen them or i think you may lose too much speed. By-all-means, keep designing, i would love to see this finished, but "designing" should be your key-word right now. think things through, one step at a time, patience will allow your creation to become tangible.

its been 12 years since i was at SFMM last, so some things may change come March 11th!!! so without having been on X, Goliath, tatsu,S:TE, riddlers, DeJa Vu, and scream(not that that scream would ever make it anyways) my number one would have to be FLASHBACK(an all time top 3 regardless of parks) I loved Viper, i always remember Psyclone being fun(so bash me fine!...) Batman was an all time favorite, and revolution!! great ride, deserves respect.

Roller Coaster Game

please, no offense to those having fun, however, 236 pages!! i only looked at the first two and last 3 pages, and 90% are all duplicates!!...you could almost call this game over. Dan "not to be the party-poper" the Man -
well, like TC rides and Jive, this too was my first coaster, and responsible for my facination there-of. I was only about 8 or so when I rode it, but, I do remember it to be a great ride, good enough to get me hooked throughout all these years. although it was a worked into the landscape of WOF quite well, its good to see that this park really mapped it into their landscape as well! thanks for the pictures and memories.

not sure quite exactly where you are in school, however, a project of this magnitute involves a litle more than good imagination. As a 5th year student in a double major in architecture and mechanical engineering, your project is nearly out of MY capabilities. I don't meen to discourage you, however, there is a hell of a lot more than drawing it out and making a few models. Just as a heads up, you will not be able to construct your rails out of wooden dowels, sure, wetting them will allow you to bend them, but to affix and maintain shape in the track will be nearly impossible with wood, AND, the friction on wood will be immense. There are alot of other factors that are involved in this type pf job. Again please, dont be disouraged, however it takes years of not only drafting expirience(CAD or non) and amazing engineering skills to really make your project tangible. As others have stated before, try construcing this model first in "no limit" (or similar) and make it to scale there, there you can figure out elevations and plan specifics...THEN try to tackle the 4th-D(X-rail) as it adds limiltless design specifics and problems. SERIOULSY!!-- your project is that of an upper level grad student, and by the looks of your drawings you don't seem to have any drafting, let-alone, engineering schooling. not to call you foolish but... BUT by all means, do whats necessary and accomplish your feat! feel free to PM me and, i might be able to further explain the dilemmas in this project.
