crispy Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 First of all here is the link to ABC news and John Stossel's report http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=123606 I really was VERY intrested in this, and it almost made me late to work, the whole thing kept me glued to the TV there are ten, but I'll hit on two highlights Myth #5, Guns are always bad for us New Mexico is one of the States that has paseed gun "un-control" as they say, meaning you can get a permit to carry a conceled weapon, and actually violent crime has dropped a bit here, and a man saved a womans life who's x-husband was stabbing her, and a man carring a conceled weapon shot and killed the man, saving the woman's life First, I do not own a gun, and don't actuallly plan on buying one, but as the report says, the Brady bill was studied, and found to have no affect on curbing voilent crime, Law breakers don't obey the law when getting a gun, its common sense Myth #3, were destroying our forest This was even more amazing to me, mostly for him leaving a forest activist speechless, LOL, in 1920 we had 735 million acres of forest, and currently we have 749 million acres, so actually the forest has INCREASED. About 7% of that is planted by man, and 93% is natural forest, so no, we are definatly not destroying our forest anyway, the report kinda opened my eyes, and shed some light on how people will grab something, and create the illusion of a problem, when really there is not one those are just my opinions, and it would be intresting to hear your thought on the report, and wether or not you agree
BiCoastal Kid Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 ^That statistic is for the U.S. though. The Amazon is the one being raped, and it makes a lot of 02 for us. :?
DeliriumTrigger Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Maybe its just me but the one about guns just reminds me of that episode of Titus (For those of you who havent seen it:) Christopher Titus: It should be a law. Everyone should have to own a gun. In fact, if you get caught outside your house without your gun, you get a ticket. And you get shot in the leg. Just to prove their point. Christopher Titus: Think about it. There'd be no more car jackings. Tommy Shafter: [Tommy's car is being robbed, the carjacker shouts "Get out of the car!", Tommy shoots the carjacker] Get out of the street! Christopher Titus: Bag boys would be more courteous. Ken Titus: [Ken is at the supermarket and shoots the clerk] It's canned goods first, then bagged goods! Christopher Titus: And people in general would just be a lot friendlier. Erin Fitzpatrick: [shooting a guy at the bank] No cuts! Christopher Titus: I want everybody to get behind this law. Because the first couple of years, a lot of us are gonna die!
Kenny Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Where is myth #1!? What a freaking tease. Also my FireFox is acting up, but still.
Not For Sale Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 If you liked this stuff, you should watch the show "Bullshit!" on the Showtime network. The first 2 seasons are out on DVD already.
crispy Posted December 31, 2005 Author Posted December 31, 2005 eh, thier opinions from him, with some stats to back it up, a couple of things to remember Gun legislation is a GOOD thing in my opninion, yes it does not reduce crime, but you don't want any schmuck to be able to walk in and just pick up a gun at a store We may have alot of landfill space available, but I'm not going to stop recycling Yes, they are talking about OUR forest in the U.S., not the forest in South America, which is in trouble, but groups do try to raise money for our endangered forest \ This report does gloss over alot of facts, but also so do alot of the causes he reports on, It was intresting to me, as it presented the opposite point of view, and used SOME facts to back them up. Most of these things mentioned are much more complex issues, and this report has not changed my mind on anything, and no NEWS report should I work at Trauma 1, the main hospital for New Mexico, and we are in the news every night, and about 95% of the time, the news is wrong
