Karen, Gavin and I drove up to Chico, California today to visit the Sierra Nevada Brewery. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Sacramento, but it’s worth it. It’s a nice drive up highway 99 though some of the very rural areas of Northern California. Areas of great agriculture were most of us get our fruits and nuts.

If you ever find yourself near Chico, make sure to stop by the brewery for a tour or even just for lunch or dinner. The folks up there are really nice. Even nice to me considering I’m a brewer for Anheuser-Busch. The food is fantastic and the beer is just overall awesome.

I’m a little disappointed though with my media. Most of the video and photos I took came out really dark. So all I have is a short video and only about twenty or so photos.

The video can be viewed by going to http://www.phishybrewer.com and clicking on the Video icon. From there, download the file named SierraNevadaNov05.mpg

Visit the Sierra Nevada website at http://www.sierranevada.com/

As always… Enjoy!

Looks like a beautiful place and WOW! the portions looked huge. I was a little worried about all the beer, tho'..... till I realized it was the angle of the photo and that you were not drinking all that in FULL SIZED glasses!! LOL

I suspect you needed a little getaway after all you have been through.... glad you had a great day!

This Brewery you visited has a Great Looking Bar!

You are Obviously a True Beer Connoisseur, to Sample their Wide Variety of Beers.

Most People Just Drink Corona, Miller or Whatever, but their are Endless other None-Mainstream types of Beer.

There is a popular Restaurant here in Orange County called the Yard House. They Offer over 250 Beers on Tap!

Many People Don't Realize Just How Many Versions of Beer are Available to Consumers.

The Pale Ale is great, and I've heard good things about the summer brew, but it's hard to come by in Virginia.

Haven't been to Chico in years--looks like it's worth the trip just for the beer and the fish and chips.

LOL, nice Photo TR, Wally! It looks like a cool place and I definitely have to do a tour like this anytime, too! They have so many different beer sorts, that is awesome! However, your video was very nice. Did you really drunk all the 16 glass of beer? Not bad.

That sampler look awesome! I would love to make it up there one day.

Eventhough it isn't even that rare ... Pale Ale is one of my favorite beers!

// Had a couple bottles of Burning River last night in Pittsburgh for you, Wally. (They were out of Dortmunder Gold)

Those fish and chips were very tasty. And the leftovers just might feed me for the next few days.

The only bad part of our visit was when after checking my ID, the waitress said "Wow you look good for your age" Yes, I am now officially old.

Thought Sierra Nevada made Bigfoot Ale. That stuff's chunky and stroooooong.

Not that I'd know anything about beer....

Big Foot Barleywine Style Ale is one those brews that is meant to be enjoyed like a fine Brandy or Scotch. I believe the ABV is 9.6%.

Bigfoot is pretty hard to find in my area, so when I chose to enjoy a barleywine I chose Foghorn by Anchor Brewing. Not as strong as Bigfoot, coming in at about 8.5%ABV, so it can truley be enjoyed.

I did taste everything, but I also didn't finish everything. That wouldn't be very responsible of me.

And in the video, I just took little sips. I wanted to have something funny in the video. I know... I'm a dork.

I've gotten some e-mails and PM's about "Where can I find Sierra Nevada?"

Well... it's really easy to find in California and Nevada. But it is distributed nationwide. I've had it in Ohio and in Vermont. Check your local specialty liquor store or a Cost Plus World Market if you have one.

Cheers!

Having a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in Vermont before starting a 15 mile hike to the last Phish show.

Heck, you can buy Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in Food Lion in Virginia. The Fresh Market is also a good source for good beer here in Williamsburg.

And I doubt there all very fresh. Sounds appealing, but I think I’d pass if I ever came across the place.

Yuck! I can just think of all that yeast built up in all those beer lines. Gross!

Wally, funny you discuss Bigfoot stuff in that post, the last pic of you makes you out to be one! Or at least some kind of weird hippy/bigfoot combo......

I can remember when we used to go to Philly to Dock Street Brewery all the time for the sample shots. The weird thing was they couldn't sell what they brewed in house for some reason. Or maybe that was Samuel Adams. My favorite place now for good beer is the Wharf Rat in Baltimore. But I only get there when we drive down for games.

I can also remember going to the Boston Beer Works for those sample test shots as well. Of course that was back in the early 90's when I was cultured drinking ESB fullers and every other quality brew.

Yeah... that was the old me. After my motorcycle accident and I got out of the club, I cut everthing off. Cleaned up a bit. The women seem to like it!
