Voyager6442 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I'm planning a road trip this summer to Cliff's Amusement Park, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio, and Six Flags Over Texas. My tentative is schedule is: Sunday Cliff's Monday Cliff's Tuesday Drive from Albuquerque to San Antonio Wednesday Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Sea World Thursday Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Sea World Friday Six Flags Over Texas. I would welcome everyone's input about these things: I can go any time from June 6 through the end of August . When would be best to avoid the crowds? How busy is Cliff's on Sundays? Are there any sights to see that you would recommend? Please feel free to add any other comments you have. Thanks so much for your input.
larrygator Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 If it is open when you travel, don't forget Switchback going into ZDT Amusements in Seguin, Texas. Seguin is very close to San Antonio
Mrlittle Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Is their a reason you want two days at Cliff's? That's a very long and boring drive from Albuquerque to San Antonio. If your set on two days at Cliff's I woukd take off early the second day. You could even stop at Joyland Anusement park which about half way to San Antonio. That way you don't have to drive all 11hrs in one day.
KBrylczyk Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 ^ What he said. Cliff's is like a 3 hour park, if that. Why would you give two full days to it?
coasterlover420 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 ^Truth. If anything, get to Cliff's in the morning or something, then just drive to San Antonio the same day. Saves LOTS of time.

ABSOLUTELY you want a day between Fiesta/Seaworld, and SFoT. the drive up I35 is about six hours (if no construction, and there is ALWAYS construction. .so expect it will take you between 7 & 8 hours). I would use the day to stop at ZDT outside of Seguin, spend an hour or two there, then continue on to Dallas/FW (maybe stopping in Austin to see the Capitol, or Waco for the Dr. Pepper Museum. . or heck, even the Dallas Zoo that you'll pass on the way into the city). then relax that evening and start your last day all refreshed for SFoT. just my 2cents.
Voyager6442 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 Thanks to all you who have responded. I'm planning 2 days at Cliff's because my sister in Phoenix might be able to meet me there. She isn't as big a coaster fan as I am, so we could spend Sunday visiting and riding what she wanted. I could go to the park Monday and get my coaster rides in. I am a huge wooden coaster fan. In the "Best Woodie Under 75 Feet" thread, New Mexico Rattler kept coming up again and again, and I think I would be up for 40-50 rides on it. Please keep the comments coming! Robert

Robert TPR has POV video of it: [youtu_be] [/youtu_be] but honestly, if you're going to parks with Iron Rattler, Titan, and New Texas Giant, not sure why you'd want to blow a whole day just to re-ride this one. unless you really like Wood coasters? in which case, I'd recommend instead of leaving San Antonio for Dallas via I35, instead take I10 and detour thru Houston (it *will* take you a good 3 1/2 + hours out of the way, but from Houston, you're a very short drive to Kemah for the Boardwalk Bullet: [youtu_be] [/youtu_be] (and only 30 minutes further to the Pleasure Pier in Galveston -- no woodie there, but some fun rides). but from Kemah, you can then take I45 as a straight shot from Houston to Dallas.
TexasParkman Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 If you enjoy waterparks- I would not miss Schlitterbahn's in New Braunsfels- Only 1 hour north of SA. If you do go up 1-35 from SA to Dallas you may wish to stop in the town of West, Texas- Just north of Waco. The Czech Bakery in West is not be missed. Just get off at the West exit and look for a lot of Cars. Most schools in Texas get out June 5th. I would come in early June to avoid the heat.
Voyager6442 Posted March 28, 2015 Author Posted March 28, 2015 Many thanks for all the good information. I can make this road trip at any time from the second week of June through the end of August. Would anyone have any suggestions about when to go to find the smallest crowds? Thanks.
JimmyBo Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I did a Texas - New Mexico trip awhile back and here's what we did... Day 1 - Drove from Tucson to San Antonio Day 2 - Six Flags Fiesta Texas then San Antonio river walk at night (this place was pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing) Day 3 - Sea World San Antonio for half day then drove up to Arlington - The reason we were only there for a half day is that I grew up in San Diego (and went to Sea World San Diego quite a bit) so the shows weren't that appealing to me and we finished most of the animal encounters and rides early Day 4 - Six Flags Over Texas Day 5 - Drove to Amarillo and went to Wonderland Amusement park at night for the wristband nighttime deal Day 6 - Drove to Albuquerque and went to Cliff's after lunch Day 7 - Drove back to Tucson. If you have no interest in Wonderland then I suggest not driving that route because it was so freaking boring I almost fell asleep behind the wheel. But then we got caught in a storm that actually produced a tornado (although we did not see it) so that was kind of cool. Not sure on best times to go as we did this trip around May so most schools weren't out yet and the crowds in all the parks were pretty slim. Jimmy "Enjoy the driving!" Bo
rcdude Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I haven't been to any of these parks, but since it hasn't been mentioned yet I'd just like to point out the Cliff's Amusement Park is closed on Mondays. This foiled my plans of stopping by for a couple hours on my road trip last June. I did drive around the park and it's pretty small (looked to be a 2-4 hour park), so if you're there all day on Sunday that should be plenty of time to ride everything and get a good number of rides on New Mexico Rattler.
