TheScooterGuy Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 (edited) For those of you who live in the Metropolitan area, and are Yankees fans, I have some sad news to give. If anyone doesn't know about the history of the original Yankees Stadium, here's a little info: The original Yankees Stadium opened in 1923 and was drastically altered in the 1970's for renovations where almost everything was altered... Except one thing. Gate 2 was basically untouched from renovation for whatever reason, and stayed the same look for the whole span of Yankees Stadium life. In 2008 when demolition began on the old Yankees Stadium an organization formed to stop the demolition of Gate 2 because of it's historic value. They (we) tried and tried to keep the gate and make it the entrance to a park, but the Parks Service turned us down after multiple efforts. It all ended today when bulldozers came to the gate that had been untouched for almost 90 years, and tore it down. This is truly a sad day for anyone who helped out with the cause and Yankee fans. Here's a picture from this morning's demolition to the gate: http://demolitionofyankeestadium.com/index.php?showimage=188 RIP Yankee Stadium Gate 2! Edited March 28, 2010 by Jew
jjune4991 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Even though I hate the Yankees, it saddens me when historic places are torn down, especially if those places meant a lot to fans. It was sad to see the Orange Bowl go, too
Skycoastin Steve Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 So glad I got to see a game in this stadium before it was closed and torn down.
ebl Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I always wondered when they were going to tear down Yankee Stadium. Now we know. Like jjune4491, I was never a Yankees fan, but the thought of yet another classic ballpark meeting its demise saddens me. What's funny is that I remember when Dodger Stadium here in L.A. was almost brand new, and now it's the third oldest park in the major leagues behind Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. Eric
Zack44 Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 It's a shame that I never was able to see a game at this stadium, especially since my mother is a huge Mets fan and we go to about a game a year (even the last game at Shea which was pretty cool). I'm also not a huge baseball fan, but it's so terrible that we keep tearing down all these stadiums in New York (Yankee, Shea, Giants Stadium) which have become landmarks in a way themselves. Oh well, out with the old and in with the new (sigh).
Chris Benvenuto Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 When Tiger Stadium got the wrecking ball, I cried inside. I lost a place valuable to my childhood, and my memories of being at the ballpark when I was young. Comerica's not the same. hard to believe that stadium will be ten-years old, come Opening Weekend 2010 for the Tigers.
Josh Linn Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I thought some sort of organization was trying to save that gate...must've failed. I can't stand the Yankees or Red Sox, so I'm pretty indifferent on this. Not to mention it technically was only a 30 year old stadium. The aforementioned gate was about the only thing that remained the same post renovation.
paintballer Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Damn that's sad. RIP Yankee Stadium, I had some fun time there. First kiss and such...
jray21 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I wouldn't mind if they go take out the Oakland Coliseum next! After they put up the Davis wall, and the other changes, it lost a lot of it's goodness. It is too bad that they weren't able to save the gate. I'm surprised the owner didn't keep it.
froggypheebs Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 It is so sad to see this Stadium come down. I would have hoped the historic significance would have played a part in trying to save it. I know it was no longer suitable to handle game crowds but it would have been nice if they kept it as a museum or even just a section of it intact.
astroworldfan1 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 My uncle has an authentic stadium chair from Yankee stadium.
