duffgun
Ok I went to Oakwood a couple of years ago 2006 I think, and I got to ride Megafobia twice I know a lot of people rate it highly and others say its overrated so I was looking forward to ridding it my self, due to getting drunk the night before we got to the park late and didn’t get on Megafobia till about 2. On the first ride I thought it was a good coaster but it just didn’t pack the punch that I thought it would. We had another ride on it just before the park shut in the same seats and I couldn’t believe it was the same ride it was utterly manic it was almost as if they had pumped it full off steroids just before we rode it. I just couldn’t believe it was the same ride I have never seen a ride improve so much in the course of a few hours. The last ride was one of the most fun coaster experiences I have had. It makes me think that some of the people who say its overrated ride it at the beginning of the day and don’t ride it right at the end when it would seem to be massively better. Anyone else experienced this with Megafobia? How would you rate the ride?
alanjonesbath
I've always really liked it. Oakwood used to my home park (I lived in Pembroke), so used to go a lot. Megafobia has always been a really good coaster in my book - not a great one mind you, as there are definately better out there, but I can't say I've ever had a 'bad' ride on it. I've always had it in my own 'top 10' coasters, as I always look forward to riding it, and am never disappointed.
robbalvey
Megafobia really ROCKED the first few years it was open. Lately though I'd say the coaster is "solid" but not over-the-top amazing. I think Oakwood has a very good woodie there, and we will always make a stop when we do a UK tour, but it's not quite what it was in 1996. --Robb
duffgun
Yeah the first ride was solid but nothing i would call amazing, but when we went on it just before closing i remember actually remember saying wow that was great, i just couldn't believe how much better it was compared to the first ride a few hours latter, I had a look on the net and found a lot of other people have found that the ride is much better at the end of the day. I also liked the fact that there was no waiting time at all to get on, i live near Thorpe Park which has terrible problems with waiting time imo. larrygator
I only rode it a couple of times on the day TPR visited Oakwood in 2006. I was very dissappointed as I expected greatness, and got mediocrity. I did not ride it late in the day. However, if it does really have a Jekyll and Hyde personality change throughout the day I personally would not rate it solely on its' best ride. I have the same dilemma when I rank Boulder Dash. I've had some absolutely amazing rides late in the day. Early in the day, not so much excellence.
duffgun
Yeah it is def much better right at the end of the day, the last ride I had I would put as my fav ride of any coaster in the uk but the first ride was only average so I am not sure if I could really rate it as the best roller coaster in the uk. cfc
I think Megaphobia is a good, solid ride (at least when I rode it in '06), but it is a bit overshadowed by Speed.
nemesis-storm
First of all, it's with out doubt the best woodie in the UK (Which is not saying too much). I agree with Robb's comment of such that in it's early days it totally rocked. Yes Megafobia has always got faster & faster as the day progresses. When riding in the dark (When the park was opened late in the summer months) it absolutely flew. Certain parts where re-tracked during last closed winter season I understand. This may of tamed certain places possibly but the overall 'roughness' has decreased.

On the other hand, it's clone Rampage at Alabama Adventure was most of the most insane rides I've been on. Complete opposite to my experience on Megaphobia. Coaster Cow
I found Megaphobia somewhat of a letdown for me. I went last summer, and I was expecting something legendary, just from reviews that I had found around the internet. It was good, but I kept on waiting for that crazy airtime that was promised, but it never really happened. It was still a decent ride, but it is no where near my top ten. Manny In England
I wouldn't say it was a genuinely breathtaking coaster, but it's certainly all round fun from start to finish, and possibly before the ride too if the ops are being fun, which this ride usually fets in my experiences. It adds more to the park than Speed in my opinion.
MiniMike
My cousin lives near Oakwood and he said it was amazing. I've always wanted to ride it but it's such a long drive away. Megaphobia is one of the only wooden coasters in the UK since lot's of them ,like the one at margate, have burned down. So it's unique to the country. I'll probably ride it next year (Hopefully). I first rode it around 1998, and it was literally one of my favourite rides ever; certainly a Top 10 - just so, so much fun. Nowadays, it's a good coaster - sort of 7 or 8/10. Nothing amazing, but certainly a solid, good ride. A couple of seasons ago, it went through a bad spell - really overly rough - but since the retrack, it's improved a bit. But still not a patch on those early seasons. Nonetheless, I got 8 laps on it earlier on this week, and really enjoyed it... and last season I had one of my best rides on it, in the driving rain - was insane.
