Kennywood layoff workers

Recommended Posts

News stations in the Pittsburgh region have reported that there will be lay offs from Kennywood, Sandcastle, & Idlewild. Lay offs include- dozen employees including mid- and upper-level management personnel are losing their jobs.

When Kennywood was purchased, the company (Parques Reunidos) said in a released statement: "They've built Kennywood entertainment into an industry leader in family entertainment. We are anxious to continue the gold standard of entertainment they have established."

I hope Kennywood pulls out of this slump and isn't to badly hurt by the economy. It's a shame. I hear Six Flags and Cedar Fair are also laying off workers.

NOTE FOR PEOPLE THAT MIGHT NOT KNOW: Parques Reunidos was purchased in January 2007, by the private equity firm, Candover Investments - is a British-based private equity firm, specialising in arranging and leading large buyouts and buyins.

Parques Reunidos headquarters are still in Spain though.

If Kennywood can live through the great depression, then I'm pretty sure they can weather out this recession as well. It won't be pretty, but they'll survive.

I hope that you are correct about this. Remember though that we are in a much different time now. Loyalty and respect for the working man/woman is not nearly what it was in the 30's. I'm not saying that this is the case with this company but it would be tough to use the Great Depression as a bellwether for the crazy corporate times we live in now.

^Great point, but it was also Kennywood's creativity that also allowed them to survive. It wouldn't shock me to see Kennywood go backwards for a bit and offered the ticket system again. As they did in the depression, allowing patrons to enter the park for free and see free shows allowed people to enjoy the park and spend money, even if it was just a little bit. It was this nickel-dime theory that helped Kennywood through hard times.

I think many parks might benefit from a ticket system right now.

Kennywood almost closed during the great depression. West View Park, Pittsburgh's other major amusement park was going strong. But I do agree if Kennywood survived the Great Depression and most parks didn't, they should. I just hope like already said, the fun day passes are not a good idea.

.

From what i've heard, CF is only laying, excuse me, scaling back on the unimportant jobs concerning Maintanance, ride ops and entertainment. also heard: they have no intentions of scaling back on concession operations largely because "people gotta eat, which is all most of them folks come for...."

Vice presidents, ceo's and such will not be touched...

I'm not saying this is true, mind you...

Kennywood will NEVER have free admission. Even if they returned to a ticket system (which I severely doubt), you can expect that GA will still be in the $10 range.

Technically, I agree. If there really was a "slump", they wouldn't do it outright, but they used to do major coupon promotions for free admission with Giant Eagle.
