alpengeistdude321 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I just watched the season premiere of Family Guy and I was very disappointed. Too much of the plot was focused on Brian and Cleveland and it was slow moving as hell. What happened to all the cutaway jokes and pop culture references? The cutaway gags, in my opinion, made the show. There were only 3 of them in this episode. It's like the writers are running out of steam. I just found myself bored during this episode. I will give the show another week or two, but if the show stays like this I'm just going to have to stop watching it because it is almost painful to watch now. What do you think?
robbalvey Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I really liked last nights episode. --Robb
AllenA07 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I agree with Robb, I thought it was funny.
chmilo24 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 So what if they didn't have a lot of cut-a-way jokes, most of the time I don't know who they are talking about in them. But I thought last night's episode was really funny. And alpengeistdude321, a good plot makes a good episode, not the lame cut-a-way jokes. Yeah their funny but they arn't what makes the show good. spaceace12 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 One thing I loved about FG was the long cutaways. Like Peter hitting his knee and him just laying there for a good 30 seconds, it wasn't funny at first, but the longer he went on, it got funny.
Scaparri Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 ^That's not a cutaway, chief. That's just dragging out a scene for comedic effect. Anyway, though I missed the episode, it doesn't really surprise me that there weren't as many cutaways. I know quite a few people who have become turned off from the show because they felt the episodes were just a crap ton of cutaways that had nothing to do with the actual plot. Hell, they even made fun of themselves for it in an episode by having Stewie call them out on NOT doing a cutaway.
chmilo24 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 They joke about cut-a-ways a lot also. Like when James Woods threatened that he was going to cut to, well a cut-a-way and Peter was like,"Don't you even dare." So I guess even the writes realize how horrible and annoying those can be. --Chris
Manny In England Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Any sign of Cleaveland getting his spin-off show yet?
Homer Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 ^According to IMDB, next fall is when Cleveland is coming on. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1195935/ This episode was pretty much alright. I especially liked the "Boom goes the dynamite" reference and Woodstock. But hey, I'm glad Family Guy recently has kind of gone back to the feeling of earlier seasons a little bit. I also might add that this week's American Dad was pretty good too, even though I'm kinda peeved they got rid of the newspaper gags. Too much of the plot was focused on Brian and Cleveland and it was slow moving as hell. What happened to all the cutaway jokes and pop culture references? The cutaway gags, in my opinion, made the show. Watch Robot Chicken then. Sometimes too many cutaway gags can make the episode mediocre or have way too much of a fast pace. Or it could make the show drag on forever (the Brian and Stewie gag about "Brian's novel" comes to mind). Then again, the only long cutaway gag I liked was the last chicken fight that lasted more than 5 minutes.
chmilo24 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 ^The chicken fights were my favorite cut-a-way jokes, but now I see chicken fight #3 way too often and it is kind of boring now. --Chris
paintballer Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Last nights episode was amazing. Partialy because I love the song Surfin' Bird, and everyone I know hates it..
alpengeistdude321 Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 I didn't think it was possible, but last night's episode was worse then the premiere. It's just so half-assed, it's like Seth Mcfarlane wants the show to be canceled again. The only part that I chuckled was the Dane Cook part. Besides that, all the jokes were just tired and too political.
chmilo24 Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 I thought that episode was really good. Besides that damn song, I liked it. The Dane Cook park and the Office Space parody had me weak, but I was laughing so hard that I was crying when he said,"It's the Jews fault for all the worlds wars!" If they were to have only 2min of that song and rest like how it was than it would have been a little better. But now all of my friends have called me up, asked me if I heard the news, and the play that song. --Chris
Homer Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Last night's episode felt half-assed for really overdoing the Bird song. The only good part was the ending that made fun of Heath Ledger and the Office Space scene, but agh. Is it me, or did American Dad suddenly get better?
SharkTums Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 ^We have a theory about that... You will not see a good Family Guy AND American Dad the same night. Almost even the same season! It really seems as if Seth focuses on one or the other and you can see the other suffer.
chmilo24 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 ^Yeah, Is saw the smething with the Simpsons and Fururama, only one would be good, not both. I missed the part with Heath Ledger, what happened? --Chris
paintballer Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Yeah, I also missed that..What was the Heath Ledger thing??
