sfmmrules! Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 I got laid off from my job, but they just re-hired me back within a week starting me part time for now until August. In September I will go back to full time like before. I have been there a year so the question is will I continue with my vacation benefits since this year -July I'm using my 5?- so next year I will get 10? I hope I don't have to start over back at 5 for next year.
Carnage Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 None of us would be able to answer that. You'd have to ask your HR department or manager.
Gav Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Wait, so your saying you'd still only get 10 days if they hadn't laid off/rehired you? Surely 10 days is not enough annual leave regardless?
Carnage Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 ^ That's pretty much average in north america. Vacation time over here tends to be only two weeks unless you have alot of seniority. I'll be going from two weeks up to three weeks vacation time next year as I've hit my 4 year anniversary. I think I'll get 4 weeks vacation after about 10 years with the company.
Teacups Make Me Sick Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Definitely, ask your HR manager (or your supervisor)...different companies have different procedures. You should be eligible BUT you are now a part-time employee, which usually means a different set of policies. Good Luck!
terrancew_hod Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Chances are those vacation days are gone. Sometimes companies will fire/rehire you to reset those benefits to something more favorable to them. So I suspect you lost that seniority in vacation time and you're back to square one, unless you happened to renegotiate that extra vacation as a condition of employment when you got rehired. One company I worked for fired the entire IT staff then wanted to hire them as consultants. That meant no vacation or benefits paid. Luckily I had another job lined up so I told them goodbye. I did rake them over the coals (at a way higher rate) for side work after they realized I took knowledge of one of their important systems with me. But definitely check with HR. Terry

The old school implication was that you stood a strong chance of being called back to work and would come back with the same amount of seniority you had when you left. You wouldn't accrue net credit service for the time you were laid off, but you wouldn't have to start at day 1 again either. This is the old school/union way of doing things. Unfortunately, as Terry said, the new school way of doing things is that being "laid off" is a lot closer to being outright terminated. Or, as they say in the corporate communications emails, "Left to pursue other opportunities." And you're likely to be considering a brand new employee under this way of doing things. Of course, every company does things a little bit differently and you'll have to ask the wonderful people in HR for specifics.

Really? that's a bit crap to be honest. I cant really imagine being able to deal with only 5 days of annual leave per year...what if you wanted to go on a trip somewhere ?(overseas for instance)..5 days isn't enough (well, i guess there are the weekend days either side) Even so..doesn't it just get too tiring? Here anyone with a full/part time job gets 4 weeks paid annual leave, regardless of how senior you are.

I have 2 weeks vacation & I have been working @ the same company for 5 years now. At the 7 year mark i'll be getting 3 weeks.
terrancew_hod Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 My last job had 5 days the first year then 10 the next. Really crappy. They had 5 days off during Christmas when the office closed, but it was unpaid. My new job gave me 3 weeks and I got an extra 1 week (unpaid) for the Europe trip. I think next year or the year after I get 4 weeks. I'm going to try to get a few day before new years off to go to LA if possible. It's a large enough company that I'm able to do it. Terry

Score for me! They moved it up a year to try and stop the massive turnover they were seeing in the lower ranks.
