NEWS: Florida's Tallest Wooden Coaster with a Corkscrew!

Recommended Posts

Sometimes it just amazes me what actually gets printed in the news. There are so many things wrong in this article I don't even know where to begin!

Shake, rattle and roll: Get your thrills on Florida's tallest roller coaster

There's a roller coaster in everyone's past.

The carnival that came to town.

The summer road trip to the theme park. The sunburn.

But here in South Florida -- 365 days a year -- there's the Dania Beach Hurricane Roller Coaster. Thousands of commuters pass it every day at I-95 and Stirling. Nearly 2.5 million people have stopped to ride since it opened five years ago.

Check it out any summer night and the best part of being 12 comes rushing back. In the parking lot, there's a dude with his custom Chevy. The doors open like wings -- up and out.

Walk through a big room filled with games of chance and the whiff of popcorn brings back those summer carnivals.

Ten bucks buys a wristband for unlimited rides. Walk up the wooden ramp.

Dozens of 12-year-olds -- corralled like mice in line -- jockey for position. They want the first car. The best view of the action.

The coaster arrives and empties riders to the opposite side. Gates open. Take your seat and fasten the belt. Put fear aside. Two workers do a final inspection. An orange safety bar comes down and locks in place.

The ascent begins.

Up, up, up, 100 feet. They call this the lift hill. The click-click-click of those touring carnival coasters seems less pronounced.

And then suddenly,downward.

The first dip isn't bad. But the coaster fools you. On the second dip your butt lifts off the seat while the stomach stays somewhere behind. Weightlessness.

The screaming begins.

Sideways. Back up. One more butt lifter. Round. Down. Corkscrew. It's over in a flash.

The herd of 12-year-olds thunders back. Down the ramp, back to the entrance. One more ride. "I want the first car!"

Up again. Down. Butt lift. Corkscrew.

Summertime. Two minutes of pure joy!

Translation:

"Butt Lifter" = Airtime

"Corkscrew" = Helix

"Florida's Tallest Coaster" = NOT Dania Beach Hurricane!
