Originally, the keys were arrayed alphabetically. Given the frequency of use of some of the more common letters, the bars for adjacent letters would often collide before hitting the inked ribbon and would jam the machine. In 1872, Christopher Scholes used his knowledge of the frequency of use of various letters to rearrange the letter sequence on the keyboard. He arranged the letters so the bars would be striking the ribbon from opposite sides of the machine, lessening the problem of jamming.
