Photo TR: TPR 2007 Japan & South Korea Tour

Recommended Posts

First off, a big thanks to the tour organisers and everyone on it who made it a really memorable trip. You know who you are.

Day 0/1 - Getting there, and the first parks of the trip.

My trip started on Friday August 31st, at Manchester Airport. You should all know enough about the trip already, so this needs no further introduction.

laquaarea.jpg.6b76ab6bce69aac905eafa567ba2be8e.jpg

But apart from the two big coasters underwhelming like never before, Tokyo Dome/LaQua is a really nice place to hang out. And we'll be back here later in this report.

Thunderdolphin2.jpg.bce8c93d6259c98f801fa018c22211ae.jpg

Why can't you be really good like all the other Intamin Megas?

spinningcoaster.jpg.8e023412f7f3a9b79821b33033f14fef.jpg

There's also a Maurer Spinning Mouse with a huge cover over it.

group1.jpg.535bafc92ec657b2ef6e399b88cc4291.jpg

Right now, the group have no idea what's gonna happen next.

geopani.jpg.815e5701f9687f582673fb4e94cc5a48.jpg

And then there's GeoPanic. One of many "WTF Happened There?" rides of thr trip.

robbandblackguy.jpg.027823690b66e7f33fbfff6269e4d456.jpg

Robb finds out what he'd look like if he was black!

lineargale.jpg.38e037cb155005df8d2bc6f298bd6622.jpg

Linear Gale was also rather weak. I could have sneezed and launched the train more powerfully.

Thunderdolphin1.jpg.804dbb8514fedbb805a0d95c98f8e9e4.jpg

Thunder Dolphin was a BIG let down.

It looks amazing, and it was an amazing achievement to get such a big ride into a tiny space. But the ride is very bland after the first drop is over, the operations were overly fussy when they should have been efficient, and only 1 train meant a wait of nearly an hour. And there couldn't have been more than 300 people in line.

BigO.jpg.63df6d065aecb34b18d0ef245ba6786c.jpg

We came here for that. Although to be honest, I would rather get the Denny's credit next time.

Dennys.jpg.0966df58cb821ae44746b26f154bbb1e.jpg

Japanese Denny's! No credit here this time.

trainride1.jpg.d1f690f99acf51f0583d7ce21fcb502f.jpg

After the quirkiness of Galaxy Express, it was time to head to the Tokyo Dome/LaQua complex.

milesnshane.jpg.9b55e6be6a4fc152fc3f1a14a99195cd.jpg

While up front, Shane and Chris do the Seatbelt Shuffe.

Hot Fuzz and Chuck demonstrate the illusion of making your hands disappear.

ge999_2.jpg.32ad29cf494ec992029f9955fa7e2729.jpg

Just don't fall asleep in the nearly 15 minute pre-show!

ge999_3.jpg.cdaa782477b986587edbf2d7470500a6.jpg

Galaxy Express 999 is a unique indoor launched looping Intamin, and was rather fun.

aquastadium.jpg.c8716fd193fee02273e4c8a8bac3777f.jpg

And after check-in at the hotel, we even got to grab a credit or few!

naritaexpress.jpg.46c4294467755b288e829fa7c4b86bf7.jpg

Once on board, it was a 70 minute ride to Shinagawa station.

pocaritom.jpg.1086c08a9291c9130893ee690972762d.jpg

To pass the time waiting for the Narita Express, I decided to become a vending machine.

scarypeter.jpg.e4cbbaebfc8252c6121dce7ea2bb695c.jpg

I met Peter at Narita Airport. He doesn't look quite as scary in real life.

skyline.jpg.45fb9a9e1b37edfb2fa9e1c0dafa3c78.jpg

We were on our way.

BAboardingpass.jpg.f9d7cc1cecc21ede61902d18675bb457.jpg

But after missing my connection for Virgin Atlantic at Heathrow due to a 2 hour delay, the nice folks at BA put me on their flight to Tokyo.

Brokenplane.jpg.f90fa45fc81ed32879667f0ad7c34f6a.jpg

The connecting flight to Heathrow Airport is not leaving, as this useless piece of junk is very, very broken.

Terminal3.jpg.7ca3e301316c7512749c45570c3f2252.jpg

So I'm in the aiport bar (the usual occurence at this point in my trip reports) before getting ready to board the plane. When...

Day 2 - Yomiuirland

The tour was in full swing now, and today we caught two trains and made the journey to Yomiuriland. The park's PR had arranged a filming session on Bandit and White Canyon in the morning before the park opened for guests, so we each got a ride in on the "Big 2" before making our way around the park.

The park had a lot of different attractions, Coasters. flat rides, dark rides and a haunted walkthrough maze, they were all there.

The most memorable part of the day was the Splash Bandit experience. In summary, one of the trains on Bandit would be subject to a fire hose in the face on three separate occasions. The force of the water was so powerful, it knocked my camera unconscious after getting the great photo that Robb posted a few weeks back.

Here's what happened...

jefftired.jpg.ccb1906783d615789b6570f27891624b.jpg

Jeff just wanted to sleep. So he did. He'll see you soon.

lounbob.jpg.832110603ec47513f695f5063548c4f8.jpg

Lou and Bob love the Shinkansen too!

group2.jpg.19df8507610593850c90361859cb1b4a.jpg

We all love the Shinkansen!

shinkansen.jpg.0325684b113aee4af4e8b4a380a585fa.jpg

We were heading south for our next series of parks, and here's our ride.

kidtums.jpg.24dbe1b6734301a2f920a16ab0230e0a.jpg

So that's why they call you KidTums!

keioline.jpg.345f30a9ec69445403d68e9633699c90.jpg

And hello Keio line, again.

banditoverview.jpg.d836df83aaad0b36210fe6801cdbb4f5.jpg

It was time to say bye bye Bandit.

girlshow2.jpg.f932eb42c91cce11fab8112d84b2d5da.jpg

Go go foam outfit girls!

girlshow1.jpg.89c22f4940029542494a672b66bfa8e6.jpg

I nearly forgot this! There was a crazy kids show featuring Manga characters in foam costumes fighting evil robots!

whitecaynon2.jpg.df7ebc504679118e2b422153a8bc0f7f.jpg

Bandit goes right out to meet White Canyon, bashes your head once and then goes back in the other direction very quickly. A bit like our group did, except we rode White Canyon.

bandithelix.jpg.94c5668e6375942d313615864f1f44ee.jpg

Helix of what, you say?

banditturn.jpg.3c0d838ae5fa11aec14b0961854d1140.jpg

I quite liked Bandit. It had a great layout with big drops, airtime and fast turns. The shoulder bars were unnecessary, but only a minor inconvenience to myself.

banditlift.jpg.6c833ada54e8414342bd49f07d8dd5e1.jpg

After getting my camera dry, I took a few more shots of the ride from well away from the fire hoses.

banditohshit.jpg.6ca9efcf47d0f344ad086db15a8afd4a.jpg

Here's why.

danaxe.jpg.7bf6770eded25643e20af2eb313ac512.jpg

Dan would rather strangle himself and get his head cut off by a Viking than ride Splash Bandit.

splashbanditsign.jpg.d9754967eaf658f258d509aad1127879.jpg

And then there's Splash Bandit. Translation reads: Dan need not apply.

caterpillarthing.jpg.b8be9a18e8897533f6314685336d8fcc.jpg

The dragon ride thinks that it's a tumble bug!

scarymaze.jpg.6faab80faef89636593df223f0b4029f.jpg

Here's the scary maze, which fortunately was quite scary!

Falafel likes her mine trains with no mine!

slcoaster.jpg.61b649f7476d004f15a463209910999c.jpg

SL Coaster was the parks mine train-esque ride.

spaceshuttle.jpg.3e0139073f3d280e11a28e2918ed09c1.jpg

At least Chris knew that this wasn't a real Space Shuttle!

wanwanbubbles.jpg.d84b4dc2ce6534beb0b79011bb54413f.jpg

It has a bubble machine!

wanwan.jpg.ad7acdfd94d03d6ad41f0f9aa03b0322.jpg

It's not just a kiddy coaster on some tarmac.

robb1.jpg.a53b35115899df4ce454c326068fadc8.jpg

Robb looks really excited about this ride!

momonga2.jpg.e43de63202dad383e78b3ee6f45fa9d3.jpg

...or stand up! And either way, the ride is really good!

momonga3.jpg.c8c7a4abaafcf6ec4260be9929255715.jpg

You can either choose to sit down...

momonga.jpg.066efe6313b29deb459f3bcf9bffaa01.jpg

Well there's a unique Togo Looper just down the path! And there's a very good reason its unique.

parkmap.jpg.2224d80d20f72ef7a559d546529fe2be.jpg

So, where to now?

whitecaynontrains.jpg.d62aecb7af6105ea585b16fac29808d0.jpg

But today the ride was rather kind to us! It has its violent moments remiscent of the late Psyclone, but wasn't all brutal all the time. The trains did have a "coffin" look about them, but we survived.

whitecaynon1.jpg.6906ec5660cf1137c88f79fc87d7a4c3.jpg

White Canyon. I can hardly wait!

ryan1.jpg.5a86e2047a2af295b833888b1dc16572.jpg

Ryan's confidence is waining slightly, because the next ride is supposed to be the most violent woodie on the planet.

group1.jpg.9ee7d5317fc78fb0159641eab1aa5534.jpg

After the Bandit filming session, we had one more ride to film on.

banditposter.jpg.070a0e81c0f267a6b8f2fe7829cd92aa.jpg

It just gets better!

postergirl.jpg.39ee9dfcee614b6deb6c90f3092be012.jpg

Nice. I like this place already.

yomiuridog.jpg.1892af403ba58646cce89cb5300815af.jpg

The Yomiuri-Dog welcomes us!

banditstation.jpg.48edc2d3d16e1efcb7673aaa247f2143.jpg

Just in case you suffer short term memory loss, this is where we are headed first.

cablecarsign.jpg.3d74562a0b71ee1c6c2aef45e9b3a923.jpg

Now this cable car warning sign has made a previous appearance on this site, but I thought you'd like to see it again.

cablecar3.jpg.4857e5fa77bffa328e62fb284a04b077.jpg

And hello Bandit!

cablecar2.jpg.c56af966d3c239c3f068d13fa1f2d76a.jpg

Bye bye rail station...

cablecar1.jpg.e045a0604e138362d7147cc15d330988.jpg

To get to the park, you take a cable car from the station to the park entrance.

yomiurilandstation.jpg.dfd1e7b8ed06832ddb756b1850f9df0a.jpg

Yomiuriland is easy to find off the Keio line. It has its own rail station.

Day 3 - Space World

Space World was one of my favourite parks on the trip.

That morning, the park helped us out with filming on Venus and Zaturn before opening time. Inside, the Space theming is amazing, with alien craft crashing into rocks and bizzare indoor rides with disco lighting, it's really quirky and a great laugh.

As for the coasters...

Venus is a Maurer Sohne Custom Looper from the mid-90s, and possibly the last roller coaster with Schwarzkopf parts and design features. It's really powerful and intense all ride long, but could do with some better restraints around the neck/head area, and standing next to a near life-size Space Shuttle, it's easy to find.

Zaturn is a clone of Stealth at Thorpe Park. It felt a tiny bit more powerful than its English cousin, and because it's not in Thorpe Park its automatically better than it anyway!

Titan in an Arrow Hyper that's not quite 200ft tall. Coathanger physics are the order of the day up until a crazy double twist halfway around the course. Not bad.

Clipper is a family coaster like a roller skater, but themed to a Space Shuttle. Everyone gets off certified as a bona fide Astronaut!

Space Coaster (or Boogie-woogie Space Coaster to give its full name) is a family coaster with forward/backward seating. Pretty good fun if you're facing the wrong way.

Black Hole Scramble is the indoor coaster, which has lots of lighting effects and fast turns. Quite good fun all in all.

There's also two good log flumes next to each other, and the smaller of the two has squirt guns to soak each other with! Along a with a huge ferris wheel, a crazy Vekoma flat ride, and some great shops with lots of merch, I really liked this place a lot. Definetly one of the nicest parks on the trip.

togostation.jpg.6fef740206546f773b44ade2b923b72c.jpg

Meanwhile we carry on to the next park through, yes, TOGO station! No death machines here though. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is next.

elissnkt.jpg.16d7b5626801bd70e9818c0ac5ae91d9.jpg

Elissa and Kristen are going back to the hotel, so they're gonna say bye for now.

Soon it was time to go though.

robbnbug.jpg.a12b82f817dc6ac231d204ad4a0d66d7.jpg

But he did impress the other characters!

I still can't think of a caption for this.

robbwings.jpg.5ba7168e78d73c4ead12a8e38d53e1f4.jpg

Which Robb just had to try on!

elissawings.jpg.ec6c97eb2ab343cf77f74f247d83ba4e.jpg

And she wins a pair of wings!

After they get out, Elissa goes over and plays the bee games.

elissandan.jpg.ed87a7ebd3a9c157032498749c830390.jpg

Look who I found on there as well!

venuslayout.jpg.215593f6b793af593c647b458fb4f092.jpg

Venus also looks nice, although I liked the previous colours more. This is a bit too garish.

titan3.jpg.29d61debc23e1d928cf6d30c4b99c913.jpg

But this bit looks like Ron Toomer had a seizure halfway through designing it.

titan4.jpg.9afdff6bd4bb05845144112dafdf3089.jpg

Titan just looks like an Arrow Hyper.

Here's the crazy Vekoma. It's too disturbing to see it in motion.

Everyone stood well back.

logflume.jpg.dd13c7e0e2cc886ffbd63e65c21bf85c.jpg

The bigger of the two log flumes has a curved drop. This is what happens after it.

Check out the crashed alien craft!

Like Venus, it just got a fresh paint job for this year.

titanstation.jpg.9c1d1662e86c5e35d9ad3f9e7bad66bd.jpg

It's a strange ride, but one that is worth a ride or two.

titan1.jpg.eebeda0d9768ba18a0d067645660cecc.jpg

After Ztealth, we walked to the "Forgotten" Arrow Hyper-that's-not-quite-a-Hyper.

Elissa just wants her credit!

After we left the sulphuric fury of the coastre that was Venus, we headed to Ztealth!

You too, Miles???

Great TR, Tom. I liked Space World too. I wish the rapids ride was working. It looked wierd and freaked-up from what I could make out, when I was on the wheel.

Ah well, another visit I guess, hmmm?

Looking forward to more.

^^Haha, nice photo! Although I must say that a supersoaker in the face was nothing compared to a fire hose in the face!

Day 3 Part 2 - Uminonakamichi Seaside Park

This is only a short update, but this was one of the most memorable parks of the whole trip, when grown men and women expressed their right to feel like kids again (not that we don't do that all the time, but this was something else).

We had a blast on the off-road go-karts, an Ice House chilled at -30 Celsius, Off-Road Go Karts, roller slides, and more.

The amusement park is a small part of a hgue complex which includes a hotel, aquarium, botanical gardens, beach, and other play areas.

Thanks to the very courteous park staff, who got us a filming session on their roller coaster before we hit the other attractions and even met us off the train.

trainhome.jpg.7b55a8a199ce22161958f6dae88a3dcb.jpg

After a few short hours, it was time to leave. Thanks again to the park and its awesome employees for a great time!

lounaussieslide.jpg.db8f091df4723360f40efa567dccb430.jpg

And we couldn't forget this.

jeffgokart.jpg.9317c1f1bf8115c47b296d70eb35f99b.jpg

Jeff is blurry not because he's old, but because we were driving on rocks.

adamkart.jpg.9dad923a462f7677e846fa18b4ca438c.jpg

Adam arrives back after some off-road action.

icehouse.jpg.f372004e4a7848f91798ad55ba60f135.jpg

After the insanity of the obstacle course, we took some time to check out the Ice House.

ryan1.jpg.d174a7fd29258aaf0664329a2eebeb34.jpg

This was the start of something truly memorable. See Robb's video when time comes.

joeybridge.jpg.3ceaf1964095f38d8ffeaa76da9d3262.jpg

Even though the monkey bars were down, we still found something else for Joey to kill himself on. But he lived.

lousface.jpg.67c69a872bf6f3a73bbe0220ec0074a4.jpg

...but what kind of face is Lou pulling?

group1.jpg.9bc9267770fb7eb059b9326409ea455f.jpg

The group watches on with baited breath...

chuck1.jpg.154cf257a808a195c5145f42887f255c.jpg

Chuck is about to fall in the sludge.

joeyhappy.jpg.390ea629ddb81c91f244afbafeacedee.jpg

Joey was happy to see the monkey bars were out of action.

coaster2.jpg.bfedf1bcf091f40cb6e580d638f778b9.jpg

Not a bad ride, quite like a lot of the stuff we rode in Japan it was good, but wouldn't break a Top 10 list.

coaster.jpg.03f1bcb48230798db86b6ac198cc9710.jpg

First up was the Jet Coaster.

park1.jpg.5bb519cbb4e8d789add7c5a0677093d9.jpg

And this is it!

uminomap.jpg.dd7950590e9596160e203147a91a50ca.jpg

There's an amusement area on there somewhere...
